A BRIEF HISTORY OF A “63 KEWPIE”,

Jay Spangler

I became a Kewpie after my parents divorced and my mom and I moved to Columbia from Clinton, Missouri. I have outstanding memories of playing football, partying and hanging out with friends. Please note that studying was not on that list!

After high school I played football at what is now Truman State. I have great memories of playing football, partying and hanging out with friends.

After college began working for what was then the Norfolk Western Railroad. On a trip back to Columbia to party and hang out with friends I met my wonderful wife, Pat, whom I married in 1972.

Life with the railroad took us to Kansas City, Cleveland, Decatur, New Orleans and St Louis. I spent over 33 years working for what eventually became the Norfolk Southern as a National Account Manager. I specialized in grain and grain products which meant I was able to sample a lot of beer and call it working.  Over the years I served on many Transportation Club boards and served as President when they were desperate for someone to fill that powerless office. I also served several terms as President of the St. Louis Rail Sales organization. I have great memories of working and hanging out with friends and partying in all of the above cities.

Pat and I had two sons, James and Tom. I did all the normal fatherly things: coached baseball, football, basketball and track for the boys. I perfected my frown which struck fear in co-workers and managed to make the boys run laughing from the room.

Our son James is married and lives in Little Rock with his wife, Jeannie, and their daughter, Morgan Grace. Morgan is an extremely gifted three year old who is currently contemplating her college choices and possible majors. Tom lives and works in St Louis and has pledged to take care of us in our old age.

In 2000 I retired from the railroad so I could concentrate on hanging out with friends and partying. I like to think I have been successful in that endeavor. Pat and I have traveled to Italy twice and also taken a cruise through the Greek islands. Most of our time is divided between St. Louis, Little Rock and Clinton where I have a portion of the family farm which was established in 1856. During our trips to Clinton I like to hang out with friends and party. Being retired is outstanding and I wish I could have done it 20 years sooner. I have a real aptitude for being retired.

I must thank my outstanding wife for writing this brief but entertaining biography since I was far too busy hanging out with friends and partying to take care of it on my own.
