Those we love truly never die Though year by year the sad memorial wreath-- A ring and flowers, types of life and death-- Are laid upon their graves. Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead A friend she has whose face will never change, A dear communion that will not grow strange. The anchor of a life is death. There is no death, nor change, nor any ending. Only a journey, and so many go That we who stay at length discern the blending Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead. From, "Readings on the Philosophy of Death" Author Unknown, from "Poetry For Verse Speaking Choir" Arranged by, Helen D. Williams

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Reynolds Alumni Center.
Jerry was born Aug. 22, 1940, in Statesville, N. C., the son of Frances and Frank Barrier.
Jerry graduated from Duke University with a doctorate in South Asian history and culture in 1966. He was hired by the University of Missouri History Department in 1967, where he taught numerous courses, including courses on Gandhi, history of India, non-violence, and peace studies. From 1983 to 1986, Jerry was chairman of the History Department. During his tenure as chair, he was instrumental in having the History Department relocated to its current building, Reed Hall. Jerry also held the Middlebush Chair in History from 1987 to 1990 and the Middlebush Chair in Social Sciences from 1999 to 2003.
During his academic career Jerry published more than 30 articles on Sikhism as well as seven books and contributed numerous chapters to books edited by other scholars.
Jerry Barrier was known as a giant in the field of South Asian studies, especially in the area of the Sikhs and the Punjab. His many publications helped to define the field, and his command of its bibliography led to broadening awareness of its many issues. One of his major publications, “The Sikhs and Their Literature,” is the primary source for Sikh scholars on the Singh Sabha period (1873-1925). Jerry further advanced South Asian studies in North America through his active promotion of books and bibliography when he launched South Asia Books, the premier source of books from India. He received the NBT Award for the Promotion of Indian Books Abroad from the government of India on Feb. 5, 1994, in New Delhi, India. Jerry’s research took him to both India, where he lived and worked on and off for several years, and London.
Jerry remained intellectually involved in his area of study, primarily the Sikhs, but also enjoyed his retirement.
He traveled throughout the world with his wife, Joanne. In addition he spent many happy days in the dog park with his dogs Missy and Malka and his son’s dog, Raja. Some of his happiest moments were sitting in his screened-in porch watching the birds at the bird feeder. He valued family especially his three children, Melanie, Rani, and Matthew, and was instrumental in organizing family events as well as family vacations, often to Hilton Head, S.C., where extended family would come together for a week at the beach.
“Whatever you do may seem insignificant, but it is most important that you do it.” — Gandhi. This is how Jerry lived much of his life, not seeing the difference between small or large deeds. It was just as important for him to buy fresh vegetables at the farmers market for friends as it was to organize an international conference or help a colleague further his or her career.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Joanne; three children, Melanie, Rani and husband Gerald, and Matthew and wife Jamarra. He is also survived by his wonderful granddaughter; his mother, Frances Barrier; and brothers Gene Barrier and wife Ellen and Rick Barrier and wife Diane.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Frank Barrier.

Mrs. Phoebe B. (Newman) Goodman, 80, of Columbia died peacefully on Thursday June 17, 2010, at Boone County Hospital.
Services conducted by Rabbi Yossi Feintuch will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at Congregation Beth Shalom, 500 West Green Meadows Road, Columbia. Burial will follow in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be at her home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 25.
Mrs. Goodman was born on Nov. 30, 1929 in Malden, Mass., to Max and Gertrude Raphael Newman.
In 1950, she moved to Columbia with her husband, Dr. Robert N. Goodman, whom she met and married while attending the University of New Hampshire. They were married on Sept. 4, 1949, and were married almost 50 years. Though they came to Columbia for two years for Dr. Goodman to complete his doctorate, they lived out their lives in Columbia, where they raised their children and became active members of the community.
In addition to raising her children and helping her husband advance his career at the University of Missouri in the Department of Plant Pathology, Phoebe was active in a number of organizations in both the Jewish and larger Columbia community including Congregation Beth Shalom, where she was its first president, Hadassah and Fortnightly. Throughout her life, she often volunteered for groups such as the University of Missouri’s Museum of Art & Archaeology, and raised money for worthy causes. Together with her husband, she welcomed many newcomers to Columbia including foreign students and faculty who came to work in her husband’s laboratory; she did this in much the same way that she and her husband had been welcomed to town years earlier. She and her husband were also the first recipients of the Hillel Foundation of Columbia’s Guardians of Hillel, an honor recognizing members of the Jewish community who have made substantial commitments of time, efforts and/or money.
Throughout her life, she loved the arts in Columbia and attended many concerts, films and theatrical performances — a love that she instilled in all her children. She was a caring mother, aunt, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother to her own children as well as many whom she “adopted” and of course, a wonderful friend! She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Mrs. Goodman is survived by her three daughters, Joyce McMurtrey of Mt. Grove, Mo., Rachel Goodman of Brookline, Mass., and Janet Cohen of New York, N.Y.; one brother, Dr. Slater E. Newman of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lucky Johnson, Davis Cohen and Max Cohen; and one great-grandchild, Amelia Fae Johnson. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
