Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Florence Jean Wilson, of Columbia, died at the MU Hospital on January 7, 2021, following hospitalization for the COVID-19 virus.

She was born on March 11, 1942 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her parents, Edgar Boone and Florence May (Laing) Boone, died young, leaving Flo and her brother, Robert, to be raised by their grandparents, Joseph and Louisa (Dutot) Boone.

Flo married her husband, Earl, in 1960. They met while he was stationed in Newfoundland with the U.S. Navy. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage or “sustained warfare,” as she liked to joke. They spent the first 16 years as a military family, moving around the country and spending long periods apart. After Earl retired from the military, they made a final move to Columbia, where they settled into a life of academics, quality time with family and friends, and traveling. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved making holidays and birthdays extra special. Flo also had a strong interest in the arts, participating in many art workshops and providing voluntary support for the Columbia Art League. Many of her paintings adorn the walls of her children and grandchildren, as well as her own home. She was a strong advocate for higher education and earned a degree in consumer economics from the University of Missouri after her children left the home. She was active in the University Fortnightly Women’s Club and several of its special interest groups. She loved traveling and visited more than 25 countries, all 50 U.S. States and all 10 Canadian provinces within her lifetime. She especially enjoyed quality time with friends and family and “happy hour" on her deck, amongst her flowers with a glass of wine. Flo was an avid reader, even continuing to read after losing much of her sight. Most of all, she was a fun-loving and feisty woman with strength and perseverance.

Flo is survived by her husband, Earl Wilson; daughters: Pamela Wilson and Kimberly (husband, John) Hiley, Columbia; grandchildren: Heather (husband, Matt) Gazda, Suffolk, Virginia, and Brandon Pepper, Roswell, New Mexico; great-grandchildren: Zake and Byron Pepper, Richlands, North Carolina, and Connor and Sophia Gazda, Suffolk; and numerous cousins and other relatives in Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Florence May Boone; her brother, Robert Boone; and one granddaughter, Hilary Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date when it is safer to gather. In lieu of flowers, gifts will be appreciated to the Florence J. Wilson Scholarship in Financial Planning at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Checks should be mailed to Mizzou Advancement, 407 Reynolds Alumni Center, Columbia, MO 65211, indicating Flo’s scholarship fund. Alternatively, contributions to a local food bank in Flo’s memory will be appreciated.

Tragically, Elmo was killed in a plane crash on November 19, 1973. Their son, John Cleek, took over running the business which today is Cleek’s Home Furnishings, Rentals & Sales and has five locations in central Missouri.

Wilma had two brothers, William Harold Selzer and Clyde Selzer who preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister, Carolyn L. Marler (and her daughter, Jeanne) of Festus; Wilma’s three children: her son, John C. Cleek (Ann) of Columbia, her daughter, Sally Cleek Francis (Roy) of Columbia, and Susie Cleek, her youngest daughter who was her best friend and caregiver for many years and true to form was with her when she died. Other survivors include grandsons: John Cleek, Jr. (Heather) and their children John Cleek III (Renee) and their son Rhett, Mary Cleek, and Thomas Cleek; Greg Powell (Becca) and their children Ava, Ethan, and Aaron; Jeff Powell (April) and their children Maebel, August and Lily (and her mother Jill Price (Jerry) and their daughter Harriet).

Wilma Cleek was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and civic leader. She had been President of her Missouri United Methodist Church Circle, a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher, a founding member of the Missouri Symphony Society, and the first female member of the Columbia Quarterback Club Board of Directors. In that capacity, she took great pride in organizing bus trips to Mizzou’s away games and with help from other members, taking homemade cookies to our coaches and players, particularly after a tough loss. But supporting Mizzou football was a natural for Wilma as her husband, Elmo aka ”Missouri ‘MO” was a legendary Tiger fan.

Wilma Cleek was a strong Christian and matriarch of the Cleek Family, who will be missed, but we know she is now in heaven with her beloved husband Elmo.

Professor John M. Kuhlman, 97, died January 17, 2021 in Asheville, North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Michaels of Mars Hill, North Carolina; his three children: Ann Kuhlman (Adel Allouche) of North Haven, Connecticut, Kay Kolditz (Tom Kolditz) of Houston, Texas, and John Kuhlman Jr. of Columbia; four grandchildren: Jenna Bell (Dan Bell), Kerry Feeney (Matt Feeney), Adam Allouche (Allison Allouche) and Alexander Allouche; and four great-grandchildren: Mary Ann Bell, William Bell, Leigh Feeney and Addison Allouche.

Born in 1923, John grew up on a farm in eastern Washington state with his parents Oscar and Amy Kuhlman, his brother Henry (Hank) and sisters Mary Beth and Jean. He attended school in Lamont, Washington and often bragged he was third from the top of his class. He always noted quickly that he was also third from the bottom since there were only five in his class. He left the farm for college at Washington State University but his education was interrupted by the Army and he served during WWII in Europe. Being in the Army taught him first hand that the world was not flat. After completing his service and his undergraduate education he went to the University of Wisconsin and earned his Ph.D. in Economics. It was at Wisconsin that he met and married Mary Ann Sigley (1925-1991) of Salem, West Virginia. They were married for 40 years.

John’s passion was teaching. He spent the majority of his teaching career at the University of Missouri, where for many years he taught the introductory Economics class with 1,000 students a semester. He always had time for students and kept his door open for any and all who needed help or just wanted to visit. Even after a severe hearing loss in the early ’70s John continued to teach. Over the years of teaching John collected many letters from students which kept him in great company during his retirement.

He retired in 1985 and started the next chapter of his life — volunteering. He volunteered for many organizations; two of his favorites were the Bureau of Land Management in New Mexico and the Literacy Council in Asheville. It was in New Mexico that John met Dorothy Michaels and was married for a second time.

John, a huge believer in public education, was very proud that he was able to attend public schools from primary grades to earning a Ph.D. at little or no cost. He paid that back many times over and told his students that they had an obligation to take their education seriously because the taxpayers were helping to foot the bill.

Pasó Por Aqui — Thousands of students passed through Professor Kuhlman’s class and he made a difference in their lives, as they did in his. Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. John Kuhlman Graduate Fellowship at the University of Missouri, or to Read to Succeed.

Doris May Phifer, age 93, of Columbia, passed away on Jan. 29, 2021 at Lenoir Woods Senior Living in Columbia.

She was born in Rushville, Illinois to Meredith Russell Harper May and Jane Kennedy May. Doris grew up in the Chicago area and attended Stephens College before graduating from the University of Missouri. In 1947, she married Bryan Phifer, who preceded her in death in 2018.

Working for many years as an elementary school teacher at Parkade School in Columbia provided great joy for Doris. She also loved teaching Sunday School at Memorial Baptist Church.

Doris had an active curiosity about everything that endured her whole lifetime. She was engaged and engaging; she was interested in people, politics, and the structure of the world and universe. While in assisted living she encouraged and tutored her caregivers who were also students. She gave advice, sought and unsought, on planning for retirement.

When Doris was younger, she and her husband Bryan sponsored refugee families three different times, inviting them to live in their home as they became acclimated to life in the U.S. Their home was a place of hospitality for dozens of people from all over the world for many years.

Doris lived her faith daily, taking seriously the two major tenets of her tradition. She loved God and her neighbor. The best tribute those of us who loved Doris can give her is to look for those who are in need and to move toward that person with commitment and care.

She was interested in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She advocated for children who are part of especially vulnerable communities. One of her last outings before the pandemic was to advocate in the Missouri State Capitol for trans children.

Doris is survived by her daughters: Carolyn (Mark) Goodman and Barbara (Thomas Sanders) Phifer; son, Stephen (Patricia) Phifer; grandchildren: Nicholas (Katherine) and John Goodman; Sarah, Benjamin, and Daniel Swofford; and Kristi (Carl) Phifer-Perez and Eric Phifer. She is also survived by step-grandchildren: LeeAnn (Mike) and Jonathan Sanders and numerous great-grandchildren.

Burial was held January 31 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Columbia.

Jane Day Casati was born May 25, 1919. She died under hospice care at home in Columbia, Missouri, on March 24, 2021, surrounded by family. She was 101.

Beloved by many, Jane was a gifted, compassionate woman of boundless energy, a deep listener with a natural gift for teaching, who loved anything outdoors and never lost her Virginia accent. Jane was an institution in early childhood education circles in Columbia, where she and her husband, Bob, raised their family.

To her three children, Jane was earthy before it became cool, which made her the coolest mom ever. She fed them vegetables from the garden and taught them impeccable manners so they could “visit the Queen.”

Jane taught her children humility by riding her bike to work or the store — usually in a skirt. She had naturally rosy cheeks, and the only makeup she wore was her trademark red lipstick.

Jane liked to laugh and say she gave her children wings and “let them go” — though she welcomed them home when the winds blew too strong. But she never let go of her children’s hearts through the darkest times.

And they loved her back. Most notably, Jenny took care of her mother for the past eight years, fulfilling Jane’s wish of dying in her own home. Rumor was Jane was going to live forever, but cancer hastened her death.

Jane was born in Lexington, Virginia, to Philip B. and Ernestine Alberry Day and grew up on the family farm. She had thick, jet-black hair topping a lanky frame and a broad, ready smile.

When she and her two siblings were young, their mother died during a medical procedure. Jane attended public schools in Virginia and graduated from Mary Washington College in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and then taught public school in Virginia.

As World War II accelerated, Jane joined the American Red Cross for overseas hospital duty. She served in the Pacific Theater until the end of the war and then transferred to club service with occupying troops in Japan, where, in Hokkaido, she met her future husband, Capt. Robert Herman Casati.

Jane liked to tell this story about their meeting: They caught each other’s eye across the room in the officer’s club. Bob was in uniform with a drink in one hand, talking with the chaplain. A good sign, she said.

After completing service with the Red Cross, she returned to the States and joined the staff of Girl Scouts of America in Washington, D.C. This was Jane's start of a lifetime in Scouting. For her tireless service she received the group’s highest honor, the “Thanks Award.”

In 1949 she married Bob and, as an Army wife, lived in many states and overseas in Germany, where children Robert Peter Casati and Jennifer Casati were born at the base hospital.

After serving in Korea, Bob left the Army in 1958. He, Jane and their children, which now included Christopher Reed Casati, settled in Columbia, where, as a civilian, Bob was employed by the University of Missouri.

Service-oriented, Jane volunteered in public schools before helping found Southwest Playschool, a parent cooperative for preschool children. She taught there for 25 years, touching the lives of hundreds of children and families.

During those SW Playschool days, Jane spent her summers serving as a counselor and eventually program director at a private camp in the mountains of western North Carolina in exchange for her own children’s participation in the program.

After retirement, Jane, Bob and daughter Jenny traveled to Switzerland for a Girl Scout reunion in a chalet in the Alps where Jane had spent time as a young woman.

As a couple, Jane and Bob loved the Missouri Tigers, driving to away games and enjoying their retirement time together until Jane was in her 80s and became Bob’s caregiver for eight years when he suffered from Alzheimer’s.

After a century, she remained a woman of fortitude, compassion and service to others, simply for the joy of giving.

Jane is survived by children: Jenny (Jim Zajicek) and Chris (Denise Szott); grandchildren: Alden, Daniel, Benjamin, Kaeli and Caroline; great-grandchildren: Wolfgang and Hazel; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert H. Casati and son Robert P. Casati.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the American Red Cross.

Jean Prange

If you've ever wondered about brilliant and self-empowered women business leaders in the Midwest during the 1940's to 2000's you need to have known Jean Prange. The unwavering drive and sharp business acumen she utilized throughout her career helped her family succeed in building the strongest foundations possible for future businesses in her community. And if you have ever been curious as to why your bra didn't fight just right you should have asked Jean Prange.

Jean was the truest form of a self-made and successful businesswoman. Her life began on December 8, 1931, being born the daughter of a Tennessee tobacco farmer she realized how different her path in life would be from that of her immediate family. She loved the gospel, but more than that she loved singing about it. Those ornate and heavenly sounds of Gospel music inspired her to search for more than what was provided for her on the farm. She met a wonderful man, Harry, who would become her husband and business partner, at their high school graduation in Neenah-Menasha Wisconsin.

But Jean knew she was destined to be more than a homemaker. Jean started her career in sales at the cosmetic counter of a small pharmacy called D & H Drug then in 1965 she sought employment at a department store called Suzanne's working at the cosmetic counter. Jean's beauty helped her thrive selling blush and eyeliner, but she was always looking to achieve more. Learn more. Be more. The boss noticed her success and in 1968 she was promoted to the lingerie department where she continued to hone and refine her business knowledge. Building on her past she then operated both cosmetic and lingerie departments in tandem.

Her prior achievements gave way to her future potential and in 1974 Jean and Harry Prange opened their first business-a lingerie store, across the street from Suzanne's on 9th and Broadway. This location thrived and them with it. Jean and Harry had a family during this time, three children, with whom she wanted to share the success and teach them the many lessons she learned throughout her career. The initial store gave way to another in Iowa City. Then one in Jefferson City. Then three more in Kansas City. All successful with the drive, knowledge and dedication of Jean and Harry Prange.

Nothing made Jean happier than providing for her family. She had three amazing and talented children who eagerly learned from their mother-Richard, Randy, and Rhonda. Jean shared the secrets of her success with those children, and they too grew up to become brilliant business owners.

Jean has finished her work here and now looks forward to a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a very long time. Jean is survived by her children-Richard & wife Pamela with children Michael & Jourdan, Randall & wife Kimberlee with children Nicole & Stephen, and Rhonda with daughter Amand

Chuck Jira passed away Friday, July 16, 2021.

Almost 82 years ago, Chuck Jira entered this world with a big personality and even bigger heart. A Nebraska native, Chuck became a Navy man in 1957, a post he proudly held for "4 years, 11 months, and 28 days."

During his naval service, Chuck learned the trade that would come to define his family owned and operated businesses. For five decades, Chuck was the brains, brawn, and founder of Jira Heating and Cooling (1973) and Tiger Ice (1977). And you can "bet your money, marbles, or chalk" he poured his heart and soul in to both companies, taking enormous pride in building relationships with his customers. In 2003, Chuck decided it was time to expand Tiger Ice. Today, Tiger Ice is housed in a 9,000 square foot plant Chuck designed and built from the ground up. Never officially "retired," it's safe to say he wasn't "just makin' pea soup" all those years after all.

Chuck's proudest accomplishment is his family. As a senior in high school, he wooed Sheila Broz, three years his junior. They eventually married in December 1968, the result of not one, not two, but three marriage proposals. (1968 marked another milestone for Chuck with the purchase of his beloved '69 Plymouth GTX, the muscle car he would restore to perfect condition 40 years later.) Together, Chuck and Sheila built their dream home (one of the first houses in Missouri to use solar energy and still the family home to this day!) and dream life. Chuck loved teaching his "Number 1" son Andy the tricks of the trade and "favorite" daughter Amy was the apple of his eye.

In addition to family man and businessman, Chuck held many other important titles. From "El Presidenté" of the Mizzou Gymnastics Booster Club to "José Jiminez," Chuck proudly boasted the title Snowbird when he and Sheila recently began to winter in Englewood, Florida. Eighty-five degrees and sunny was Chuck's perfect climate. Life in Florida brought back great memories of days spent on the pontoon at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Chuck welcomed any reason to host a party, roast weenies, and show off his shop kegerator. Part of Chuck's legacy is undoubtedly the Jira Family Easter Extravaganza, a 43-year-old tradition that has welcomed hundreds of family members and friends who take to the Jira's front yard in search of thousands of eggs—"that's more eggs than you can shake a stick at!"

It is important to address the obvious question: Did Chuck reveal his secret ice recipe in his final days? Nope, "just as sure as he was a brain surgeon and jet pilot," he didn't. He took that secret to his grave. But Chuck's legacy lives on through his beautiful bride Sheila, hard-working, loyal children Andy Jira (Cindy) and Amy Johnson (Dan), and his 4 granddaughters, Maddie, Avery, Alex, and his namesake, Charlie. Chuck's wisdom will also live on forever. After all, "Life's too short for this! Slow down, you donkey!"

Join us in celebration of Chuck's life. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 23rd from 4-7pm at Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will take place at 10am on Saturday, July 24th at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Dr. Carmen Francis Menezes

Dr. Carmen Francis Menezes, age 82, was a caring father, grandfather, brother, uncle, professor, and friend. He joined his Heavenly Father on August 12, 2021. Carmen passed away of natural causes at his home, Crestview Senior Living, in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Carmen was born to Rose and Hildebrand Menezes on January 25, 1939 in Bombay, India. At the age of 18, he traveled alone to the United States to pursue his graduate education in economics. After completing his studies at the University of Milwaukee and obtaining a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, Carmen became a professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He taught both undergraduate and graduate level economics for a remarkable 49 years, specializing in microeconomics. Carmen's work was widely published, and he retired as Professor Emeritus.

Carmen cared deeply about his students and colleagues, both professionally and personally. His door—Office 222 at 909 University Avenue—was always open. Over the years, he taught students from many backgrounds, ranging from foreign exchange students to his daughters' life-long friends. At the end of the workday, Dr. Menezes was a friend and mentor to everyone he encountered, student or not.

Carmen's greatest joy was spending time with his two daughters (Melinda and Ashley), three grandchildren (Victor, Tomas, and Vincent), and his many siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Crestview Senior Living tablemates.

Outside of his family, friends, and career, Carmen's pastimes included studying the Bible, regularly attending church, genuinely engaging—and often asking seemingly unending questions—to everyone that he met, sharing charismatic stories, watching or reading action adventure mysteries, and occasionally engaging in mischief. There was never a dull moment when you were with him. Whether he was surprising you with his love of giant breed dogs, trying to explain the intricacies of microeconomics with applied calculus, or causing you to fall over laughing while casually telling you of his driving mishaps, Carmen always brought joy and laughter to those around him.

Carmen is survived by his daughters (Melinda and Ashley (Scott)), his grandchildren (Victor, Tomas, and Vincent), his siblings (Arnold and Maryann), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered. Rarely is a life so well lived and gracefully departed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Coyote Hill Children's Home. Carmen quietly and consistently supported their efforts to end child abuse by providing safe living for Mid-Missouri children in foster care. https://coyotehill.org/

Donna Studley

Donna Jean Rita Rakestraw Studley,89, passed from this life to the loving hands of her family on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 in Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho.

Donna was born July 22, 1932, in Mineral, Bureau County, Illinois, the first of three children born to Robert and Genevieve Roush Rakestraw. Donna helped raise her two younger siblings and loved spending summers with her Grandmother Rakestraw where she helped feed "the threshers". Since she was pretty and out-going, Donna was always surrounded by friends. She was a cheerleader all through high school and was the 1950 Farm Sports Festival Queen. She met her future husband, Bob, when she chased him around the playground in first grade. They were high school sweethearts and were married, November 25, 1951, in Mineral, Illinois. Bob was deployed to Korea in January, 1952, which started a long year apart for the newlyweds. When Bob returned from war they moved to Finland, Minnesota where Bob was assigned for the Airforce. Their only child, Karen Leigh, was born on March 28, 1954 in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Donna loved children and was a devoted mother to Karen and a doting grandmother to five grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Life took her little family from Mineral to Peoria, Illinois to Columbia Missouri where Bob started his career in Life Insurance Underwriting. Donna had many skills and always tried to help out the family wherever they ended up. She worked as a bank teller a couple of times and an apple peddler, when the family started an apple orchard on the beloved Studley Farm. Her favorite jobs, however, were working with children. She worked at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri as a secretary to the principal of North Hall. The students all learned you had to obey the rules when "Mean Donna Jean" was around. However, her favorite job was as the school secretary at Grant Elementary School in Columbia. She loved mothering all the students and keeping everything running smoothly. She retired in 1994 to go RVing with her husband all over the country with the Good Sams. She and Bob enjoyed adventures to Mexico, Alaska, Nova Scotia and Hawaii, just to name a few. They made many lasting friends in their RV group and even served for several years on the Good Sam Missouri State Committee.

Donna was very athletic and her life was full of activity. There was weekly roller skating in the early years of their marriage followed by bowling leagues and membership in a square dancing club. Living in Missouri, there was always access to plenty of water, so water skiing in the summer with family and friends was a treasured activity.

In their later years, Bob and Donna moved to Virginia, Idaho to be near their daughter and grandchildren. Family was everything to Donna. Donna had many talents and loved people. Her house was full of the embroidery and crafts she created, and the clothing items that she sewed. Her family enjoyed her creative cooking and fancy parties.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Karen Brady (John) and five grandchildren, Michelle (Andy) Soderberg, Christopher (Alisa) Brady, Robert (Elisse) Brady, Randy (Erica) Brady, Michael (Mandy) Brady and 17 great-grandchildren, which she adored. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Robert Eugene Rakestraw, her sister, Patricia Patchett., and her husband Robert Edwin Studley.

Funeral services have already been held. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family by visiting www.horsleyfuneralhome.com.

Eugene "Gene" Koepke

Columbia - Eugene "Gene" Donald Koepke age 73, of Columbia, MO passed away on September 16, 2021. He was born on October 17, 1947 in Owensville, Mo. He grew up on a farm on Hog Trough Road between Owensville and Cuba, Mo. He loved farming and developed a lifelong passion for sports. At the age of 13, Gene was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. That changed the trajectory of his life. He felt he could not successfully farm like his father or drive a truck like his grandfather.

Upon graduation from Owensville High School in 1965 he went to Capitol Business College and learned bookkeeping. While living in Jefferson City he made many lifelong friends. He was afraid his MD would keep him from getting a good job but was hired by Missouri State Penitentiary and worked there for 10 years. He had lots of great stories about those years and made many more friends, always referring to them as his "prison buddies."

On August 7, 1969 he married Frances Stafford. They eloped to Oklahoma much to the dismay of her parents. Many years later they found out her parents, Stan and Lois Stafford, had also eloped when they married. At the age of 25 Gene was no longer able to walk and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair but did not let that slow him down. In 1975, Gene left MSP and went to work for his in-laws at Pepsi. This gave them the opportunity to travel to Pepsi Conventions all over the USA. In 1986 the Pepsi franchise was sold and the family soon retired.

In retirement, Gene was able to give more time to his passion for sports. He attended Missouri football and basketball games for over 40 years. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He started going to Columbia College games and became the honorary coach always sitting between the coach and the scoring table. The relationship with the CC Men's Basketball team grew and they were invited down for a lake day every year and several meals at the house.

Gene was a philanthropist, but he liked to fly under the radar. He donated too many causes and organizations over the years.

After 41 years of happy marriage, Fran passed away in 2010. In 2015, Gene married Deb Iwig and they had 6 very happy years together.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Laura (Jeff) Lentz, who always was there for him when needed, and also a son, Mark Koepke. He had three beloved granddaughters, Averie, Lillyanne, and Roselynn who gave him much joy. He also enjoyed the company of his two stepchildren, Caity and Jackson Hermann. Gene is also survived by his mother, Gladys Koepke; brother, James (Dorathea) Koepke, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He loved his family very much and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Monday, September 20 from 5 to 7 pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia, MO 65202. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 21, at 11 am at Columbia United Church of Christ, 3201 I-70 Drive NW, Columbia, MO 65202 with graveside services following at Memorial Park Cemetery. Merle Marcus Buck

Columbia - Merle Marcus Buck, 95 of Columbia passed away Sept. 20, 2021. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, November 5, 2021 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1600 W. Rollins Road, Columbia, Mo.

Merle was born Sept. 6, 1926 in State Center, Iowa to George and Margaret (Schuler) Buck. He was the third child of six, Vernice, Arlene, Merle, Earl, Karen, and Dan. He married Jean (Benner) Buck, also from State Center.

Merle received his elementary and secondary education in the State Center schools, participating in vocal music, band, football, and other athletic activities, which led to his relationship with Jean, his future wife of 75 years.

He served in WWII in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. After discharge in 1946, he enrolled at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While at Coe, his plan was to coach. He chose Coe because he wanted a small college where he could play football, rather than a large school where he might spend most of his time sitting on the bench.

After WWII ended, Merle played football for the 9th Infantry Division, where they won the U.S. Army European Championship.

In December 1946 Merle married Jean. Merle was voted President of his Junior class and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He made the Mid America Athletic Conference football team all four years at Coe, was nominated to the Small College All-American football team, was named by the International News Service to the All-Midwest team where he was only topped at his defensive guard position by players from Notre Dame, Minnesota and Indiana. Merle was inducted into the Coe College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976.

Merle graduated in 1950 and went to work for the Dept. of Agriculture in Des Moines, Iowa selling Federal Crop Insurance. He later enrolled in Drake University in successful pursuit of his master's degree in accounting.

In 1954 the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where Merle worked as a public accountant for Arthur Anderson & Co. While there he passed his CPA exam and became a Certified Public Accountant. In 1959 the family moved to Gallatin, Mo., where Merle entered a partnership with Joe Roberts, who owned the local telephone company. In 1960, Merle moved the business to Columbia, Mo., where he opened the Columbia Service Bureau. He grew a sizable business acquiring billing and accounting services for independent telephone companies in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Louisiana. While in Columbia, Merle began 50 years of service to the Presbyterian Church, serving in the Synod, and as Elder and Deacon to multiple Presbyterian Churches.

In 1972 Merle sold his business and joined Continental Telephone Company (later known as Contel, and eventually Verizon). His employment with Contel led the family to Reston, Virginia; corporate headquarters in Bakersfield, California; St. Louis, Missouri; and eventually Seymour, Indiana. Merle retired in 1991. He and Jean pursued one of their dreams, moving to the ocean front and golf community of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Hilton Head was the family homestead for 19 years. Merle and Jean hosted contestants each year during the International Piano Competition. They traveled the world extensively visiting every continent except Antarctica.

Merle was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, and celebrated their World Series Championship in 2016. He also was a Mizzou football fanatic, celebrating their great victories, and scolding every missed tackle. He attended games in the 1960's, and again starting in 2010, when Merle and Jean moved back to Columbia.

Merle is survived by Jean, his wife of 75 years, brother Dan Buck of State Center, Iowa; son Craig Buck (Donna), son Rod Buck (Lynn) of McLean, Virginia; daughter-in-law Patricia Buck of Clarksville, Tenn.; four grandchildren: Levi Buck of St. Charles, Mo, Laura (Allen) Cristobal of Los Angeles, Calif. Alysha Buck, and Amy Buck, both of McLean, Virginia; and three great grandsons: Logan Buck, Ethan Buck, and Nathan Cristobal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Vernice (Al) Silveria, Arlene (Howard) Lander, Karen (Dale) McCarger, brother Earl "Chub" (Alice) Buck, and son Bradley Paul Buck, and daughter Stella Lee Buck.

Caroline J. Harr

Columbia - Caroline J. Harr, 97, passed away on September 27th. Caroline was christened Caroline Josephine Jaroszewski by her parents Nick and Mary Jaroszewski on February 22nd, 1924. Caroline was born and grew up in rural Ottertail county on a farm near the small town of Dent Minnesota. Times were tough during the depression years and farm chores took priority over education requiring Caroline to attend to her farm chores and discontinue school after the 8th grade. She also began waitressing in a small café where she met her future husband Joe Montgomery. They were married in 1942 and moved to Kansas City and then to Columbia in 1943 settling first on a farm northwest of Columbia and then into town.

Joe started an excavating company and together they started a family raising three boys, William F. (Sandy) Montgomery; George W. (Lynn) Montgomery and Clifford J (Pam) Montgomery. Caroline met Charles Harr at a Parents without Partners meeting and they subsequently married in 1975 at Caroline's church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Caroline was for many years an avid bowler but had to make way for square dancing where the couple enjoyed 22 years on the dance floor, mostly with the Dudes and Dames, and including many national square dance conventions. They also traveled every year to Minnesota even as Caroline was in her 90's to see her relatives and escape the summer humidity in Missouri. Other travels included trips to Europe and England.

Mary Elizabeth Henzel

December 28, 1937-September 28, 2021

Our dearly beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Fenske) Henzel, 83, of Columbia passed away on September 28th, 2021, surrounded by her four children.

Mary Elizabeth, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Fenske, was born on December 28th, 1937. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated from Marymount High School and went on to attend and graduate from Case Western Reserve.

On March 31st, 1960, Mary Elizabeth was united in marriage to John H. Henzel in South Bend, Indiana on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Mary Elizabeth provided love and support for her growing family, as her husband's schooling and medical career took them from Michigan, to Ohio, ending in Columbia, Missouri. As Mary Elizabeth's family continued to grow, she kept busy with her children's many activities while working as the office manager in her husband's medical practice. Mary Elizabeth loved building relationships with many of her husband's patients. Even after her husband retired, she kept in contact with many of the patients and their families.

In Mary Elizabeth's "spare" time, she could be found reading a good book, dancing with her daughters in the family room, challenging anyone to a game of billiards or ping pong, or happily sitting poolside splashing her legs in the water while her children tried to entice her in. Whether enjoying a good cup of coffee and conversation with her dear neighbor friends to snorkeling, parasailing, or being a business partner in a clothing store, Mary Elizabeth was always excited to try new things. While raising her family, Mary Elizabeth would occasionally be found doodling on a random piece of paper. It was not until her later years that she went from doodling to painting beautiful pieces of artwork. Many of her paintings are found in her and her children's homes. Modest as always, Mary Elizabeth never wanted her artwork to be entered into any art shows. An ardent Notre Dame fan, Mary Elizabeth looked forward to the kickoff of college football season. Her children, grandchildren and friends knew better than to call while her beloved team, The Fighting Irish, was playing on TV.

Mary Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John H. Henzel, of 58 years. To mourn her passing, Mary Elizabeth is survived by her children: John (Rose) Henzel of Washington, MO, Tim (Laura) Henzel of Columbia, MO, Jenny (Lance) Glasgow of Tonkawa, OK, and Kristen (Adam) Lega of Fort Collins, CO; grandchildren: Sean, Gabriella, Emelie (Jon), Adam (Megan), Sarah, Zane, Kaitlin, Nick, Evan, Gabriel, and Annaliese; great-granddaughter: June; brother: Joe (Patricia) Fenske; brother and sister-in-law: Jean (Sally) Henzel and Mary Pat (Tom-deceased) Sloan, and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 10 am. Memorials are suggested to: St. Joseph's Indian School PO Box 326 Chamberlain, SD 57326 or Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska 1316 Peger Road Fairbanks, Alaska 99709.

Stephen Heffernan Willey

Stephen Heffernan Willey, a widely respected real estate appraiser and dedicated servant leader in Columbia for more than 50 years, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 2, 2021 in Columbia.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, both at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 902 Bernadette Drive, Columbia. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Steve was born in Springfield, Missouri, the middle child of Clarence B. and Alice Heffernan Willey. He attended Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Steve was an American patriot who believed deeply in his country's core values and highest ideals. He was proud to have served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army National Guard, and prouder still of the decorated service of his son, Army Major John Michael Willey. Steve was a devout Catholic and a longstanding member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, a man who believed in public service and contributing to the common good: From his volunteer work with the American Red Cross and his 15-year term on the Planning and Zoning Committee, to his long association with the Jaycees, Steve was always the quietly dependable guy who showed up and stepped up to make Columbia a better community.

Steve also served Columbia as one of its most respected and successful real estate professionals. Founder and owner of the American Real Estate Company, he was widely recognized for his skill as a real estate appraiser, his commitment to client service, and his unwavering professional and personal integrity. In honor of those talents and values, Steve served in 1978 as the President of the Columbia Board of Realtors and in 1982 was named Realtor of the Year.

Soft-spoken and quick to smile, Steve loved a good story – especially the ones about Stephens College, where his wife, Leslie, is an alumna and has been a faculty member and administrator for more than 25 years. Steve loved – and was beloved by – so many friends and neighbors across Columbia who recognized in him a man of sharp wit, great kindness and gentle humility.

Steve is survived by Leslie, his wife of 26 years; his daughter, Mary Willey Banash of Overland Park, Kansas; grandsons Andrew and Alex Banash; and his sister, Sharon M. Willey of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his son, Army Major John Michael Willey; his brother, John Francis Willey; and his parents, Clarence B. and Alice Heffernan Willey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Steve and Leslie Willey Scholarship Fund, established to support a diverse community of students at the Stephens College Children's School; or to the American Red Cross. Carl Kisling

Over six years after being given only six months to live Carl W. Kisling passed away in his sleep in the early hours of November 8th.

Born on October 30th, 1942, to Carl D. and Bonnie Kisling (Burkey), Carl now joins them again in Heaven. His brother Don also predeceased him, but he is survived by his two sisters, Betty Darrow (Wayne) of Jasper, MO, and Rosetta Henry (David) of Lawrence, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Kisling (Iles), whom he married on June 12th, 1964. One of his biggest fears was leaving her behind so he promised to come back to help in any way possible. We imagine he and his brother-in-law Jim Clark are watching over Jean and her twin sister Jane Clark of Joplin, MO to make sure they don't get in any trouble. Carl is also survived by his sister-in-law Janice Yount (Wes) of Polk City, FL.

Carl was most happy when he had a purpose and he found purpose in sports and in his work. There wasn't a sport he wouldn't try: baseball, basketball, football, track, bowling, golf, darts, and more; and almost always he was just naturally good at them. Baseball/softball were his favorites for much of his life where he both played then later coached in the Babe Ruth League, played on traveling fast pitch teams in Joplin, Cincinnati, and Columbia, and would go on to coach both his daughters in softball. In high school he played football and basketball before graduating from Sarcoxie High in 1960 and joining the National Guard, where he served until 1967. Concurrently he worked at Steadleys in Carthage for 10 years before getting a job at MFA Insurance in Columbia in 1971. There were a few brief years of working at Leggett and Platt in Cincinnati, OH from 1973-76 before returning to MFA (Shelter Insurance) in Columbia. Shelter is where he would retire in 1995 which was followed by a return home to Sarcoxie to farm (delicious) beef cows. Although he reminisced about his time at Shelter and would rattle off the first and last names of every co-worker he ever worked with, the farm is where he was most happy.

Carl was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015 and his bull-headed stubbornness to fight against the cancer gave us years with him that we didn't think we had. Those years were not always the greatest for him as later in 2015 he was given another reason to hate cancer when it took his youngest daughter Shawna. Like many fathers, he would have given anything to trade places with her. The fight against cancer took its toll on him and in 2017 he begrudgingly gave up the farm, but he wouldn't stop fighting and continued to run an ever-expanding vegetable garden in his backyard. Well Carl, you don't have to fight anymore; just promise to give Shawna a hug for us.

He is survived by his loving eldest daughter Kecia Reddick (Kisling) and her husband Scott of Columbia, MO. He also leaves behind three treasured grandsons: Brandon Reddick (Melissa) of Columbia, Adam Reddick (Shanna) of Columbia, and Zane Reddick of Marion, AR. Carl has three wonderful great-grandchildren as well: Mirabella, Jaxon, and Lincoln. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who he loved and cared for dearly; many of which were instrumental in keeping him going the last several years.

For those who are able to make it, graveside services only will be held on Saturday, November 27th at 11:00am at Garber Cemetery in Newton County.

Creighton then entered the University of Missouri-Columbia majoring in Animal Husbandry, graduating in 1954, (Alpha Zeta Honors), at which time he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. From Fort Sill, he was assigned to Wertheim, Germany, where he served as the XO for Colonel Thomas Sanders, C Battery, 804th Field Artillery Battalion ("Feel Our Steel"), until his promotion to First Lieutenant and Honorable Discharge, mustering out of service at Fort Hamilton, New York, in 1956.

Dolores “Dee” Chapman, 91, of Plano, Texas, (formerly of Columbia and St. Louis, Missouri) went to the Lord on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.

Dee was born on March 24, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri, to parents Alfred and Velma Martin. Shortly thereafter, she moved with her parents and her identical twin sister, Anita, to Tipton, Missouri. Their house was filled with music growing up: Dee took piano lessons from her parents and learned to play the flute. She also participated in choir and often sang with her family at home.

Dee graduated from Tipton High School in 1948. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, before transferring to the University of Missouri in 1950 to pursue her love of music. During her time at Mizzou, she participated in University Singers, a selective choral ensemble of the MU School of Music.

She also found another love at Mizzou—the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Chapman. Tom spotted Dee one afternoon at Gaebler’s Black and Gold Inn, a popular student hangout. As Tom tells it, she was sitting in a booth with her sister, her mom and a friend from Tipton, and he thought, “Wow! She’s pretty cute!” Under the guise of placing a phone call, Tom went to a phone booth conveniently located across from their table. In reality, his “phone call” was a cover to spend a little more time in Dee’s presence. The two officially met a few weeks later when Tom and his longtime friend saw Dee and Anita on campus. They walked the sisters home, and Tom asked for Dee’s number. This time, he followed up with an actual phone call and asked her out.

The pair went on their first date on October 22, 1950—an evening of dancing to a big band at Brewer Fieldhouse. It was also the evening when Dee quickly learned that Tom wasn’t the most graceful on the dance floor, but she told him, “It’s all right; you just can’t dance.”

A few months into their relationship, Tom joined the Army and would soon be deployed to Korea. Before he left for Officer Candidate School in Oklahoma, Dee pressed Tom on a date one evening at the student union. “What are your intentions?” she asked. Tom shared that he wanted to marry her, and the two ultimately decided to wed after he returned from serving in the Korean War. During the war, they kept in touch by letter.

Dee continued her studies and completed a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in music education in 1952.

On June 5, 1954, she married Tom at St. Ann Catholic Church in Normandy, Missouri. Over the next few years, they lived in Columbia and St. Louis and welcomed their three children. Daughter Joan was born in Columbia in October 1955, son Tom was born in July 1957 in St. Louis, and son Mark was born on their wedding anniversary in 1960 in St. Louis. Dee taught private piano lessons during their time in St. Louis.

In 1965, Dee and Tom moved back to Columbia, where they would spend the next five decades. During a distinguished career with Columbia Public Schools, Dee taught vocal music to countless junior high and elementary school students. While teaching, Dee earned her master’s degree from Mizzou in music education.

The first of her four grandchildren was born in 1989, and Dee and Tom would spend much of the next two decades making the 10-hour drive from Columbia to the Dallas area to visit and help care for their cherished grandkids.

Dee retired in 1992 after teaching for a total of 28 years but remained involved in the Columbia community. Dee was a member of the Boone County Unit of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, serving as president from 1997 to 1998. Dee was also active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, including volunteering at the holiday bazaar for many years.

In 2018, Dee and Tom moved to North Texas to be closer to daughter Joan and son Mark. They enjoyed lots of family gatherings, celebrations and holiday dinners.

Dee will be remembered in many ways: As an endlessly kind, compassionate and thoughtful person—her warmth and positivity benefited everyone around her. Michelle Renee Asbury, 60, of Columbia, MO passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021 while surrounded by family in Columbia, MO.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 7, 2021 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Memorial services will be on Saturday, January 8, 2021 at 10:00 am, both at Memorial Funeral Home.

Michelle was born in St. Louis on November 28, 1961 to Vincent and Mary (Bobbie) Nangle. She graduated from Saint Dominic High School in 1981 and received her hairstyling license after graduation. On March 23, 1991 she married Greg Asbury. Michelle worked until their first child was born, and decided to become a home maker taking care of her two sons and husband.

She loved to entertain and cook, nobody ever left the house hungry, spending time at the beach at Lago Mar, and most of all visiting with family and friends. When her boys were young she shuttled them and multiple friends to practices, plays, and events. Although she hated her sons playing football, she was always the football team mom. We think she broke the record for how many 9th grade boys you can fit in a Navigator on trips from West Jr to Hickman for sports. In the boys high school days, she would go get all the food for Thursday night dinners for the whole team. Her life was raising her children and taking care of her husband. Michelle always put family before herself. The screened in porch is where many hours were spent with family and friends, it was her favorite place. Michelle also enjoyed mowing her 6 acre yard, which she used as her “tanning bed”, and her hubby appreciated very much. Everybody knew how tender and loving Michelle was.

She is survived by her husband, Greg; two sons, Kyle (Ashley) and their daughter, Riley and Ryan (Jessica) and their son, Grayson on the way; sisters, Mary (George) Bennett, Linda (Barry) Gnade, Mary Pat (Alan) Stahlschmidt, Louise (Tom) Birkenmeier, Laura (Tom) Stewart, Meg (John) Pisani, and Julie (Greg) Fix; brother, Vincent (Debbie) Nangle; 23 nieces and nephews; and multiple great nieces and nephews.
