Russell A. Chambers, 79, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Adams officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

Mr. Chambers was born June 25, 1919, in DeSoto, Kan., to Frank and Allene Chambers. He married Dorothy Hoge on June 26, 1943, in Cuero, Texas, and she survives.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Missouri United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Missouri Music Educators Association and the Missouri Band Masters Association. He owned and operated The Music Shop in Columbia for 48 years.

Survivors also include a son, Russell Chambers Jr. of Springfield; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Aloys G. Schoennoehl, 61, of Boonville, and formerly of Columbia, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Lakeview Health Care in Boonville.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.

Mr. Schoennoehl was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Norfolk, Neb., to Aloys and Erna Kenney Schoennoehl.

He married L. Jean Gerhardt on Dec. 31, 1993, in Boonville, and she survives.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boonville.

Alvin Frederick Wehmeyer, 82, of Rocheport died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Wehmeyer was born March 13, 1916, in Warren County to Carl William Wehmeyer and Ida Sieckmann Wehmeyer.

He married Josephine Dometrorch on Nov. 1, 1942, in Boone County, and she survives.

He retired from employment with the University of Missouri and had also been a farmer.

Survivors also include three sons, Glenn Wehmeyer, Dean Wehmeyer and Dale Wehmeyer, all of Rocheport; two daughters, Freda Ferguson and Juanita Smarr, both of Rocheport; four sisters, Helen Silvey of Columbia and Berndena Alexander, Vernetta Wehmeyer and Ileen Dometrorch, all of Rocheport; and nine grandchildren.

Obituary: Debra Koppenaal

Debra Lynne Koppenaal, 43, of Macon, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999.

Services were held in Macon. Burial was in Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Ga.

Mrs. Koppenaal was born Aug. 14, 1955, in Hannibal to Ken and Nancy Jones.

She married Gary Koppenaal, and he survives in Athens.

She graduated from Hickman High School. She was employed as the assistant manager of the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop in Macon and was a member of the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency.

Survivors include her parents of Columbia; three children, Laura Koppenaal and Andrew Koppenaal, both of Athens, and Victoria Weeks of Macon; and a sister, Karen Roberts of Fayette.

She was preceded in death by a daughter.

Annabelle Taylor, 72, of Columbia died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Max Jennings officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Taylor was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Woodlandville to James Ray Epperson and Ila Laurine Daly Epperson. She married Estill Taylor on Jan. 29, 1947, in Shaw, and he preceded her in death.

She was retired from work as a cashier at Memorial Union at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Survivors include a son, Lonnie Ray Taylor of Columbia; a daughter, Jana Whitehurse of Columbia; a brother, Robert Epperson of Fulton; two sisters, Betty Connor and Doris Shannon, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.

W. Paul Keithley, 83, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at First Christian Church with John Yonker officiating. Private burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Keithley was born Sept. 12, 1915, in La Plata to Clarence and Bertha Tucker Keithley.

He married Wanda Mae McCollum on June 15, 1940, in South Gifford, and she survives.

He graduated from La Plata High School and Chillicothe Business College. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a chief warrant officer. He worked for BS&S Steel Co. in Kansas City and later for Shelter Insurance from 1946-78, retiring as secretary/treasurer and secretary to the board of directors.

He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of the board and treasurer. He also was a board member of Lenoir home and the Missouri School of Religion.

Survivors include three sons, John Keithley of St. Louis and Bill Keithley and David Keithley, both of Columbia; a daughter, Sue Fink of Columbia; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Henry Lewis Dietz, 82, of Columbia, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Dietz was born May 9, 1916, in Fulton to Edward and Julia Dietz. On Oct. 31, 1936, he married Vinnie Jennings. On April 25, 1964, he married Wanda Jones, and she preceded him in death on April 6, 1998.

Mr. Dietz owned Henry Dietz Signs on Big Bear Boulevard for 33 years and was a member and officer of the World Sign Association. He sold his business in 1978 and retired.

He attended Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Elks Lodge since 1949 and was exalted ruler in 1953-54. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Sunrise Optimist Club.

Survivors include a son, Gordon Dietz of Camarillo, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Parks of San Diego, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Barbara Ross and Judy Douglass, both of Kansas City, and Sandra Turner of Columbia; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joe Dietz; a sister, Francis Davis; and a son, Roger Dietz.

Ruth P. Hamilton Pierce, 80, of Lee’s Summit died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit.

Mrs. Pierce was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Windsor to Frank and Eullabelle Perry. She married Lawrence Hamilton in 1941, and he preceded her in death. She later married Albert Pierce in 1975, and he also preceded her in death.

She attended Hickman High School and Stephens College. She retired from 35 years of
employment in the transportation industry including working for Leonard Bros. Transportation Co. in Kansas City. She wrote a book on claims handling service. She was past president of the Women’s Traffic Club and a member of Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Baptist Medical Center, both in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit Hospital and John Knox Village.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Rising of Phoenix; two sons, Jim Hamilton of Blue Springs and Jerry Hamilton of Leawood, Kan.; two brothers, Gene Perry of Columbia and John Perry of St. Louis; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mildred Crawley, 89, of Lincoln, Neb., died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in Lincoln.

Ronald D. Naeger, 48, of Columbia died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Naeger was born Oct. 30, 1950, in St. Louis to Andrew and Marie Naeger.

He married Joyce Baker on Feb. 27, 1971, and she survives.

He received a bachelor’s degree in radio, TV and film and a master’s degree in communication, both from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His employment history includes working for Channel 17 and later as an assistant professor for the MU School of Journalism.

He received the O.O. McIntyre Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching in 1998. He was an Army veteran, serving at West Point Military Academy, and was with the Missouri Army National Guard from 1978 to the present, attaining the rank of chief warrant officer.

Survivors also include his mother of St. Marys; two sons, Jason Naeger and Aaron Naeger, both of Columbia; a daughter, Leanne Naeger of Columbia and two brothers, Richard Naeger and Kenneth Naeger, both of St. Marys.

She later was employed as an occupational therapist in the children’s ward at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center, becoming head of the occupational therapy department. She retired in 1978. She was a member of Missouri United Methodist
Church.

Dr. Carnahan was born July 21, 1941, in Poplar Bluff to Charles and Lorene Schafer Carnahan.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1966, had a post-graduate training internship in pediatrics at MU and had his residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He served as a pediatrician in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church and Missouri State Medical Society. He was published in "Best Doctors in America" in 1996-97 and
was a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. He held a private practice in Columbia from 1971-99. He was chief of pediatrics at Boone Hospital Center in 1972-73 and 1992-93, first director of pediatrics at Columbia Regional Hospital, was chief medical officer and chairman of Boone Clinic from 1986-99, member of executive board and treasurer of Central Missouri Primary Care 1995-99, on the board of directors of Advent
Enterprises from 1993-97 and chairman of the board of Therapy for Kids 1996-98.

Other survivors include his mother of Columbia; a son, Chris Carnahan of St. Louis; two stepsons, John Scalise of Columbia and David Scalise of Kenosha, Wis.; a daughter, Libby Carnahan Lawson of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.

Charles C. Cornett, 84, of Columbia died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, at Missouri United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the church.  Arrangements made under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Cornett was born Oct. 26, 1914, in Pleasanton, Iowa, to Charlie and Nettie McKinney Cornett.

He married Reva Hagan on Sept. 3, 1935, in Princeton, and she survives.

He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church, Grand Order of Pachyderms, Quarterback Club and Country Club of Missouri. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and former member of Columbia Health Commission and Governor’s Committee on Aging. He was employed with Farmer’s Home Administration as a
state executive officer for 35 years. He later worked for First Bank of Commerce.

Survivors also include a son, C. Bruce Cornett of Columbia; a daughter, Ann Anderson of Columbia; a brother, James Rush Cornett of Pleasanton; seven granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Waldo F. Mottaz, 85, of Columbia died Friday, April 23, 1999, in Columbia.

Mr. Mottaz was born April 1, 1914, in Irondale to Clarence and Stella Christopher Mottaz. He married EmaletaMoser on Nov. 3, 1934, in Waterloo, Ill., and she survives.

He owned Mottaz Motors Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership in Auxvasse and Columbia from 1946-58, and remained in the automobile business until 1966. He was a past president and chairman of the board of the State Bank of Hallsville. He was also chairman of the board of the Bank of Montgomery County.

He was a past president of the Missouri Bankers Association and a charter member and past president of Little Dixie Kiwanis. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and a longtime member and an elder emeritus of First Christian Church.

Survivors also include two sons, Fred Mottaz of Hallsville and Clayton Mottaz of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Emily Barbush of Louisville, Ky.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Juanita Putnam, 67, of Centralia died Friday, May 7, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Harry Earl Burge, 82, of Columbia died Monday, May 17, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Burge was born July 2, 1916, in Centralia to Harry Earl and Martha Belva Masterson Burge. He married Margaret Coffman on April 9, 1944, in Columbia, and she survives. He had been employed as a flight instructor during World War II, based at the old municipal airport, and later became head of the aviation program at Stephens College. He retired in 1980 from being college comptroller and vice president for business affairs. He
was a member of First Baptist Church and was active with the United Way, Airport Advisory Board and board of directors of Blue Cross-Blue Shield.

Survivors also include two daughters, Barbara Chancellor and Beverly Spencer, both of Columbia; three granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

She was a member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She graduated from business college in Chillicothe, then worked as a secretary at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She retired from Boone County National Bank after working for 35 years.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Athens Rebecca Lodge.

Mrs. Nowell was born March 3, 1931, in Webster Groves.

He was a graduate of the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri and a member of the MU football team that played in the 1940 Orange Bowl. He was founder and board member of Century State Bank. He was a member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church, a member of Jefferson Club of the University of Missouri and the Missouri Athletic Scholarship Association. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1938-42.

Mrs. Allton was born Feb. 25, 1905, in Lock Springs to Oscar and Emma Boyington Thompson.

She married John Allton on Aug. 18, 1927, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of P.E.O. and a homemaker.

Mae Emalyne Coats, 81, of Columbia died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at her home.

She married Marion Aubrey Coats on Feb. 26, 1938, in Ashland, and he survives.

She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church, Wings Around Tiger Town Camp Club, Columbia Senior Center and a past 4-H leader.

Survivors also include three sons, Jerry Coats and John Coats, both of Columbia, and James Coats of Houston; two daughters, Marie Thompson and Bonnie Martin, both of Columbia; one sister, Maxine Faucett of Centralia; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Carroll McDannold

Carroll Lee McDannold, 57, of Columbia died Thursday, June 24, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Community United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Cox-Johnson officiating. Visitation will follow in the Community United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. McDannold was born June 30, 1941, in Middletown to Charles McDannold and Roberta Morris McDannold.

He married Carol Beatty in Mexico, Mo., on July 9, 1960, and she survives.

He was a member of Community United Methodist Church and worked for Prudential Insurance for 22 years. He was later self-employed as a broker and farmer.

Mr. McDannold graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1963, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and played baseball from 1961-63. He received his Charter Life Underwriter Designation in 1968 and served as president of the Columbia Association of Life Underwriters in 1970-71.

Mr. McDannold was active in coaching Daniel Boone Little League and Russell Elementary School basketball and football teams. He coached the American Legion Post 202 baseball team from 1980-82.

Other survivors include his mother, of Mexico, Mo.; two sons, Rick McDannold of Columbia and Greg McDannold of Rocheport; a brother, Charles McDannold of New Hartford; a sister, Linda Collins of Arnold; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Jesse McDannold.

Survivors include two daughters, Ernestine Tapp and Harriet Jeanette Hardiman, both of Columbia; a son, Martin Kenneth Williams of Columbia; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

He was an electrician before his retirement. He was a member of Local 257 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and attended Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ruth Estelle Ragsdale, 87, of Chesterfield died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Brooking Park Retirement Home in Chesterfield.

Mrs. Ragsdale was born July 24, 1911, in North Battelford, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Paul Ferdinand and Estelle Merrill Lanz.

She married John Ragsdale in September 1937, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Iowa State College in Ames and was a county home agent in St. Genevieve. She and her husband moved to Columbia in 1948. She was an associate professor of child development at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1955-66. She was a member of Sigma Kappa and the Missouri United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Petersen of Creve Coeur and Christine Ewing of Rockwall, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Howard V. Nichols

Howard V. Nichols of Columbia died Friday, July 23, 1999, at his home. He was 68.

Mr. Nichols was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Boone County to Murtie Boone Rollins and Perley Everett Nichols. He married Amy Evalee Morris on Feb. 8, 1950, in Columbia, and she survives.

Mr. Nichols was a self-employed painter from 1955 to 1976, when he retired because of a disabling arthritic condition.

He was a veteran of the 1st Special Service Force in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

Dr. Edward C. Lambert, 89, of Columbia, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Lambert was born Jan. 29, 1910, in What Cheer, Iowa, to Edward Gray and Elsie May King Lambert.

He married Ella Cole on May 30, 1936, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and she survives.

He was a member of the Missouri United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He served aboard the USS Competent in the South Pacific, and on the staff of Admiral Glascock as Top Communications Officer in Europe. Mr. Lambert served on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Columbia as a professor of journalism and also as assistant to the president in charge of television. He founded the broadcast news sequence at the Missouri School of Journalism, leading him to create KOMU-TV in 1953. As general manager and founder, he developed the idea of using the station to train his students in the broadcast sequence, putting the job of reporting the news and producing the broadcasts in their hands. For more than 20 years, he served as the moderator for Missouri Forum on KOMU and on radio stations throughout the state. He also served as news director for KFRU radio.

Survivors also include two daughters, Pamela Lambert of Columbia and Barbara Reichel of Dayton Beach Shores, Fla., and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Richard R. Catlett, 90, of Columbia died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Catlett was born May 2, 1909, in Springfield to Richard and Ila Catlett.

He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University and moved to Columbia in 1963, where he operated the Columbia Specialty Foods store for over 25 years. He was a founding member of the Columbia Friends Meeting and a peace activist for many decades. After WWII, he worked with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to help rebuild the dairy herds of Europe. He was also active in Everyday People.

Survivors include one daughter, Natalia Catlett of Columbia; one son, Richard Catlett of Columbia; and two brothers, Charles Catlett and John Catlett, both of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Mr. Breedlove served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Sturgeon.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 280, past monarch and secretary of Aleppo Grotto, for which he served as state president of the Central States Aleppo Grotto.

Mr. Breedlove was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 59 AF&AM in Centralia and a 50-year member and past president of UA Plumbers’ and Pipefitters’ Local Union No. 317.

He had been an employee with J. Louis Crum Corp. for more than 40 years.

Survivors also include a daughter, Anna Bloomfield of Columbia; three brothers, Nim Breedlove of Columbia, Morrison Breedlove of Hallsville and Eldon Breedlove of Madison; three sisters, Virginia Clark of Columbia, Irene Sexton of Centralia and Glorena Davidson of Independence; and a grandchild.

Hilda M. Hampton, 67, of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Tipton Manor in Tipton.

Mrs. Hampton was born Oct. 20, 1931, in Lee’s Summit to Charles Mengel and Ella Haas. She married Roy Hampton in 1949 in Las Vegas, and he survives.

Louise Koch, 90, of Belen, N. M., formerly of Columbia, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Koch was born Feb. 2, 1909, in East Prairie to Claude Hale and Katherine Shuppert Hale.

She attended McKendree College in Illinois and received a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess and a state employment counselor. In 1951, she was voted "Mother of the Year" in Columbia.

He married Geraldine Irene Hartley in 1946, and she survives.

He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and of the University of Colorado-Boulder. He served in the First Marine Division Fleet Marine Force during World War II. He was manager of the tire division for MFA Oil Co. in Columbia from 1964-74. He was founder and chairman of Foree Tire Distributors in Denver.

Survivors also include three sons, Whitney Thomas of Littleton, Colo., Cliff Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Arnold Thomas of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Marilyn of Greeley, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.

Obituary: Paul Schirmer

Paul J. Schirmer, 76, of Gladstone and formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Woodbine Health Care Center in Gladstone.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kenneth Gerike officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Schirmer was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Verona to Albert and Catherine Buehler Schirmer.

He married Ruth Kottmeyer on Oct. 8, 1950, in Freistatt, and she preceded him in death.
