Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Carol Lorene Pinney Crabb, 76, of Columbia died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater of pneumonia. She had battled Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at First Baptist Church, 1112 E. Broadway.

Born and raised in Ottawa, Kan., the daughter of John and Lorene Pinney, Mrs. Crabb attended Colorado Woman’s College in Denver before transferring to Denison University in Granville, Ohio, from which she graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. She returned to Ottawa, where she taught at Hawthorne Elementary School for one year.

She married William C. Crabb in 1951. They lived in Homewood and Gardner, Kan., before moving to Columbia in 1967.

Mrs. Crabb was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher and dedicated volunteer at First Baptist Church and Ridgeway Elementary School. An avid reader who instilled an abiding love for books in her children, Mrs. Crabb taught adults to read with the Laubach Literacy Program in the 1970s. She also authored articles about local history for the Missouri Historical Review.

It is for her love of quilting, however, that she is best known. Mrs. Crabb became passionate about quilting in the 1970s. She joined quilting circles, made dozens of quilts, taught the craft at the Quilt Cottage in Columbia, researched and wrote articles, bought every book and subscribed to every magazine on the subject. Eventually, she became a nationally recognized quilt historian, invited to lecture and judge contests across the Midwest and the nation. In 1993, she co-authored a book called "A Patchwork of Pieces," an anthology of quilt literature from 1845 to 1940, with Cuesta Benberry. The book was recently republished under the name "Love of Quilts: A Treasury of Classic Quilting Stories." Until recently, Mrs. Crabb made crib quilts for children at Rainbow House.

Mrs. Crabb strongly believed that homemade was better than store-bought. This applied to everything from baked goods to Halloween costumes to Christmas cards. When her children were young, vacation destinations were campgrounds in national parks and historic sites across America. Later in life, she enjoyed more comfortable accommodations during extended stays in England, Australia and New Zealand and as she traveled with her husband on Elderhostel excursions in South America, Europe and Asia. She also loved wintering in Panama City Beach, Fla.

She is survived by her husband; sons Richard of Kansas City, James of Creve Coeur and Thomas of Coral Gables, Fla.; daughter Jennifer Reynolds of Rose Valley, Pa.; grandchildren Ian, Hugh and Malcolm Reynolds and Logan, McKenna and Griffin Crabb; and by her four siblings, John Pinney, Robert Pinney, Thomas Pinney and Elizabeth Duncan.

She was preceded in death by grandson Graham Andrew Reynolds.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Mid-Missouri, 1121 Business Loop 70 E., Columbia, Mo., 65201, or First Baptist Church, 1112 E. Broadway, Columbia, Mo., 65201.
