Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Richard G. Hoft, Ph.D., 79, passed away at 11:10 a.m. Jan. 1, 2006.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia. An additional memorial service is planned this summer.
Dr. Hoft was professor emeritus of electrical engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was active in the community for more than 40 years, a tireless mentor to many students, an accomplished professional engineer and author, steadfast member of Missouri United Methodist Church, and a devoted family man.

Dr. Hoft, who most knew as Dick, suffered a massive stroke the evening of Dec. 29 during a holiday gathering of his beloved wife, children and grandchildren. His wife, Merna, remarked: "We just celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary and were surrounded by our loving family." He was 79 years of age and had battled Alzheimer’s disease for 10 years.

Dick was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Wall Lake, Iowa, and raised on a family farm, complete with an outhouse. He was a devoted son and brother but maintained a steadfast ambition to go to college.

He was the valedictorian of his one-room country school and attended DePauw, Purdue, and then Iowa State universities, where he graduated in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree of science in electrical engineering.

He married his high school sweetheart, Merna Collis, on Dec. 28, 1946.

The couple relocated to Schenectady, N.Y., for the next 15 years, where they started their family while Dick worked at General Electric Co. His professional life centered around the field of power electronics, completing a master’s degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and co-authoring the first modern book on power electronics. Among many other significant projects, he helped to develop circuitry for the first nuclear-powered submarine. In his personal life, he was active in First United Methodist Church, local politics and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Dick felt compelled to share his knowledge and determined to become a college professor. In 1963, the family moved to Ames, Iowa, where Dick completed his doctorate in electrical engineering in two years. He was immediately hired as an associate professor at MU and promoted to full professor with tenure within three years. He gave 35 years of service to MU and mentored more than 30 graduate students who have gone on to be leaders in their field in industry and academia in the United States and throughout the world, including Europe, Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea and India. He directed an internationally recognized power electronics center, conducted important research, consulted for industry and spent eight years as the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. His work in power electronics contributed to the development of IBM computers, electrically powered automobiles and modern mass-transit system trains. He received more than 30 grants and contracts, providing substantial outside funding for his research group. He authored more than 60 technical papers, and his textbooks were translated into three languages. Dr. Thomas Lipo, another editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and a contemporary of Dick, described Dick as a "towering figure in the early days of power electronics." Among his many professional awards included the first IEEE William E. Newell Award for Outstanding Achievement in Power Electronics in 1977, the Byler Distinguished Professor Award from MU in 1984, the Distinguished Service Award from the IEEE Power Electronics Society in 2000 and the Third Millennium Medal for Outstanding Contributions to the Power Electronics Society in 2000.

Merna reminisced: "We traveled to many different places around the world and were royally treated because of the gratitude and respect held by former students for Dick." One former student from the 1970s called Merna within days of Dick’s death from Japan to offer his condolences and expressed that Dick was "like a father to me."

During his years in Columbia, Dick was an active member of his community and Missouri United Methodist Church. He served as head Boy Scout master for more than eight years. He chaired multiple church-related committees for more than a decade, which ultimately resulted in provision of chaplaincy services for patients in local hospitals. He tirelessly supported the MUMC, serving as high school Sunday school teacher, singing in the choir and sitting on the MUMC Executive Board.

Dick contributed to countless causes and embraced people of all races, nationalities and religious faiths. He was a proud Democrat and, with his wife, Merna, spent much of his retirement years engaged in volunteer work through their church, Kiwanis (Golden K chapter) and at local hospitals and schools. Dick also completed 13 marathons after age 50.

All who knew Dick were touched by his generosity, warm spirit and determination to make the world a better place. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, former students and professional colleagues around the world. All were enriched by their interaction with Dick, and the world benefited from his wonderful life. He is survived by his wife, four children, 10 grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters.

Donations may be made in Dick’s name to Missouri United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) research initiatives.

Mr. Silvey was born Feb. 9, 1921, in South Gifford to James Madison Silvey and Mary Vergie Garlett Silvey.

Mr. Silvey was a dedicated father and husband. He served his country in the Air Force during World War II from 1942 until after the end of the war, delivering supplies to the front-line troops and even behind enemy lines. He was in France after its liberation and served in England before returning to the United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy and agricultural economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He married Helen Wehmeyer Silvey on June 13, 1948, and taught in a government program designed to help Missouri veterans become better farmers. After a successful career in agro-chemicals, Wayne moved to Columbia and earned both his insurance and realtor licenses. After five years, he took a position with the city of Columbia, where he worked until retirement at age 71.

From his memoirs came the following two passages that best describe the good and honest man he was known to be: "On June 13, 1948, Helen Louise Wehmeyer and I were married. This is the best thing that ever happened to me. Helen’s cheerful outlook on life through the years kept me going in the face of disappointments and frustrations working for big corporations." "The other best part of my life has been our children, Connie, Marla, Carol, Curt and Dave. All of them have been successful in each one’s own way, and I am proud and happy to be their father."

Mr. Silvey is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Helen Wehmeyer Silvey of Columbia; daughters Constance Silvey-Simons of Omaha, Neb., Marla Jane Silvey of Chicago and Carol Beth Silvey of Columbia; sons Curtis Wayne Silvey and David Wayland Silvey, both of Columbia; and four grandchildren, Ian Simons and Will Simons, both of Omaha, and David "Andrew" Silvey and Heather Silvey, both of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers James, William and Charles; and sister Naomi.

Mr. Silvey will be dearly missed by his family and friends for he was truly a member of America’s greatest generation in every aspect of his life. God bless him and all who surrounded him.
