Dear Alumni,

Plans are being made for what we hope to be the first Annual LHS Alumni All School Reunion. Classmates from 1940-2008 are being invited to participate. Tentative plans include a Welcome Coffee prior to the Louisiana Country Colorfest Parade at the High School, participation in the parade and an evening social. Please watch your mailbox for more detailed information and a response request.
Many classes are planning individual events in addition to those above and we’re excited to support those as well.

Please make room on your calendars to attend this event!

Alumni association is formed

Alumni association will organize effort to promote opportunities for R-II students and create an all-school reunion at Colorfest each year.

A group of nearly 30 classmates met at the Louisiana Public Library on Saturday March 8 to discuss interest in forming an association.

After little discussion, it was decided to form an association named the Louisiana High School Alumni and Friends Association.

The group nominated officers from the floor with Gail Shaw as secretary, Becky Penrod for treasurer, Walter Logan will serve as vice president and Cindy Blaylock will be president.

It was decided that the group will form a legal entity and seek non-profit status.

In discussing the purposes the group would start on the formation documentation, several ideas were aired. Among them, support of the Louisiana R-II School District, financial scholarships for graduates and an annual all-school reunion.

Dues were established at $5 per year.

Blaylock reported that a former classmate of the Class of 1963, Charley Blackmore, who lives in Columbia, has volunteered to create a website for use by the group. Blackmore will work with the committees to add information as it becomes available.

Several committees were formed during the meeting; they were the event committee, a scholarship committee and a membership committee.

The event committee will be chaired by Robbyn Morris. This group will plan and carry out the All School Reunion scheduled for Colorfest weekend.

The scholarship committee will be made up of Elaine Brookshier, Martha Sue Smith and Tina Dewey.

Joyce Findley volunteered to chair the membership committee and will set out identifying those classes that the group still lacks contact information for.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 5 at 10 a.m. It will be held in the basement of the Louisiana Public Library. Anyone who is interested in being a part of the association or the All School Reunion is encouraged to attend. Those in attendance will be designated as charter members in the association documents and the group will finalize plans for the reunion weekend.

Members will also compile a final letter for notification and invitation to the First Annual LHS Alumni and Friends All School Reunion.

I moved to Louisiana, Missouri about half way through the 1st grade from Shelbian, Missouri, in early 1952, and I finished the 1st grade at Field Elementary School, in Mrs. Gabriel's class.  I again went back to Field School for the 2nd grade with Mrs. Stevens as my teacher and had Mrs. Reid for the 3rd grade.  I remember the principal, Arnold Zaeske, actually paddled a boy in front of the whole class in 2nd grade.  We lived in a big red brick duplex on Georgia Street in Louisiana for about a year and Gerry Green and his family lived in the other side.  We then bought a house on Margaret Drive. Our neighbors were; the Grimmers, the Malys, the DeVergers, the Doors and the Longs.  My 4th grade year I attended the brand new Meriwether School, which was just north of the track at the Louisiana High School.  My early school years were a very meaningful time and I still cherish those old early childhood friends from Louisiana, Missouri.  Ever since I got a driver's license in 1961 I  have always enjoyed going back to Louisiana and visiting those old friends and have done just that every few years.  I put together a 40th Class Reunion for the Louisiana High School Class of 1963 which was held October 18, 2003.
