Frank Munro Tucker, 78, of Big Spring died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, of a sudden illness and heart failure.

A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home, 1221 Washington St., in Hermann, with visitation one hour before services. Coffee, tea and cookies will be served after the service.

Frank was born Feb. 5, 1929, in El Paso, Texas, the son of Henry Dewitt Tucker and Kathleen Munro Tucker. At age 9, he moved with his family to Missouri.

Frank graduated from Hickman High School in 1947.

He served as a clerk typist in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1949 to 1952.

He married Phyllis Jean Forbes on May 12, 1951. To this union, one child was born, Ellen Anne Tucker.

After his service in the U.S. Army, Frank attended college at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He graduated in May 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in science education and conservation.

During his life, he earned three master’s degrees in education, geology and statistics.

He taught school at Harrisonville Missouri Senior High School, Normandy Missouri Junior and Senior High Schools and St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington, Mo.

After the teaching career, he opened the Hermann Silver Shop in Hermann, selling sterling silver jewelry he designed and created.

After moving to Big Spring, he opened Tucker Antiques. He was a member of the District Library Board. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Forbes Krueger of Washington, Iowa; granddaughters Jessica Krueger Engel and husband Tim of Fort Leonard Wood and Sallie Munro Krueger and fiancée James Benedict of Iowa City, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Russell William and Chloe Anne Krueger of the home with their mother; his brother, Dan Tucker and wife Opal of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Forbes of Columbia; his nieces and nephew, Shirley Gallatin of High Ridge, Michael Stroud of San Antonio, Texas, and Stacey Tucker La Pointe of California.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Phyllis Forbes Tucker; his parents and grandparents; his sisters, Mary DeVore and Anna Margaret Stroud; his father-in-law, Russell Forbes; and son-in-law, Vernon Warren Krueger.

Memorials may be given to the Hermann Regional Library in the care of Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home. 

Peggy Sue Hughes-Forbis, 68, of Columbia passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Memorial Funeral Home with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ms. Forbis was born Aug. 5, 1936, in Columbia to David Leo and Mona M. Hinshaw Hughes. She was a 1956 graduate of Hickman High School. She had retired from the Stadium Wal-Mart after 25 years.

Survivors include her parents, of Columbia; three children, Pattie Forbis and Dale Carr of Centralia, Edith Canole and David Vaughan Sr. of Hallsville and Charles Forbis and wife Lisa of Florida; a brother, Ronnie Hughes and his wife, D.Ann, of Kingdom City; six grandchildren, Mindie Canole, Danielle Vaughan, Whitney Bentlage, David Bentlage, Ravin Forbis and David Ray Vaughan Jr.; several nieces and nephews; and a great-granddog, Zoe.

Richard Thiel Evans, 23, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in McMurray Chapel at Missouri United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating.

Rick was born April 23, 1981, in St. Louis. His parents are David and Kathryn Evans.

He graduated from Hickman High School and was in his senior year at Columbia College, majoring in computer sciences. He had also attended Central Missouri State University and Trinity Western University near Vancouver, B.C. While in school he had worked at Socket, Integrated Solutions and Personalized Computers.

Rick enjoyed playing the guitar and drums and outdoor activities such as rappelling and snow skiing. His family and friends will remember him as extremely intelligent and always willing to help a friend. He will be missed by those who loved him.

Survivors include his parents; his brother, Mark Evans of Columbia; and his sister, Dawn Jones of St. Louis.

Paul D. Dexter, 39, of Columbia passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005.

Mr. Dexter, son of James and Patricia Pasley Dexter, was born Sept. 26, 1965, in New York City.

He was a 1984 graduate of Hickman High School.

He attended Baker University in Kansas and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

On April 30, 1994, he married Stacey Rowland in Columbia, and she survives.

He was the owner of Dexter’s Tae Kwon Do Training Center. He was a fourth-degree black belt. He participated in many national and international competitions and won overall gold medal championships in Greece, Canada and North Korea. He was the commissioner of tae kwon do competitions in the Show-Me State Games for the past 12 years.

Paul was very giving and influential to many people of all ages and in all walks of life through his connections at his martial arts business. He had a passion to help people to be their best through his gift of sharing his time, skill and knowledge.

Survivors also include his parents, of Osage Beach; two sisters, Marjorie Newell and husband Ricky of Rocheport and Barbara Duggan and husband Brian of Charlotte, N.C.; and nine nieces and nephews.

William O. Gibson Jr., 78, of Columbia died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Gibson was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Woodlandville to William Oscar and Catherine Steckdaub Gibson.

He was a 1944 graduate of Hickman High School.

On May 8, 1948, he married Leona Ruth "Lee" Keel in Jefferson City, and she preceded him in death. On March 3, 1967, he married Edna Arnold in Miami, Okla. Later, he married Elizabeth Vance Zaner on June 18, 1988, in Moberly, and she survives.

He was employed with Hulett Heating and Air Conditioning for 43 years before his retirement in March 1987. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Moberly. He was also a member of Twilight Lodge No. 114 AF&AM and Moolah Temple AAONMS of St. Louis; past board member of Midway Heights Elementary School; a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, past president of Experimental Aircraft Chapter 151; a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association; and a charter member of Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 474.

Survivors also include three children, Linda Phillips of Wooldridge, George Gibson of northern Boone County, and Jennifer Garner and husband Tony of Eureka, Kan.; three stepchildren, Twyla Jackson and husband Harold of Sedalia, Dayna Zaner and wife Cheri of Columbia, and Iris "Sam" Kanatzar of Columbia; four grandchildren, Graham Phillips and wife Sally, Rachel Phillips, Jozie Garner and Casey Garner; five step-grandchildren, Chris Jackson, James Zaner, Aaron Zaner, Sabra Zaner and Tres Kanatzar; seven great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Susie.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Helen Phillippe Burkey, 97, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005.

Graveside services will be at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan 29, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. John Baker officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Burkey was born April 14, 1907, to George and Sallie L. Toalson Phillippe and after age 7 was raised by her foster parents, Ora and Dave Enochs. She was a graduate of Columbia High School. On July 28, 1974, she married Leon Burkey, and he preceded her in death in June 1979.

She retired from GTE after 45 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Sneed Class. She was also a member of the Independent Pioneer Telephone Association, Boone Hospital Center Auxiliary and past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Lavonne Allison of Washington, Mo.; nine step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and foster parents; two foster sisters; two foster brothers; a stepson; and a great-great-niece.

Beula May Long, 74, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Webb officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Long was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Columbia to James C. and Lula M. Kile Berry. On Oct. 30, 1950, she married Ray C. Long Jr. in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Christian Women’s Club, the church choir and Women’s Missionary Union.

Mrs. Long loved to crochet.

Survivors include a son, Larry R. Long of Columbia; a daughter, Brenda K. Sullivan and husband John of Columbia; a brother, James E. Berry and wife Lenora of Columbia; four grandchildren, James R. Sullivan, Jeffrey A. Sullivan, Matthew A. Long and Amy K. Long; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bowden will lie in state at Mizzou Arena from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Bowden was born July 20, 1978, in Columbia to David O. and Beverly S. Phillips Thomas. On July 29, 2003, she married Corey G. Bowden in Negril, Jamaica, and he survives.

She was a 1996 graduate of Hickman High School and received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2002 from Columbia College.

She was a Columbia police officer at the time of her death and previously was employed with the University of Missouri Police Department.

She attended Grace Bible Church. She was a student pilot, loved horses and water sports. She was a former member of Woodlandville 4-H Club and FFA at Hickman High School.

Survivors include her parents; husband Corey; two stepsons, Cody G. Bowden and Brandon T. Bowden; a brother, Matthew W. Thomas and wife Heather; a niece, Brooke Thomas; father-in-law Daniel E. Bowden; and mother-in-law Connie J. Bowden, all of Columbia.

John Byron "Lightning" Knight, 57, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005.

A celebration of his life will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 19, at Rock Bridge State Park, with a procession to Hartsburg Landing.

John was born July 29, 1947, to Byron and Estherlyn Knight in Columbia.

John enjoyed fishing, storytelling, boxing, the arts, bonfires and just having fun.

John never met a chicken he didn’t like!

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1966 and studied art and education at Northeast Missouri State University.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Lynn Coder of Boston and Toni Caciedo of Blowing Rock, N.C.; several nephews and nieces; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Betty Ann Bonifield, 67, of Lubbock, Texas, and formerly of Hull, Ill., died at 10:50p.m. Friday Feb. 11, 2005, in Lubbock.

Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m.  Feb. 17, 2005 at the Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. Burial was at the Kinderhook Cemetery, Kinderhook, IL.

Mrs. Bonifield was born Oct. 17, 1937 in Columbia, Mo. to Guy R. and Mary Ellenor Lewis Mercer.  She attended, Grant and Lee Grade Schools, Jefferson Junior High, Hickman High School and the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.

She married Lowell Bonifield on Jan. 340, 1956 in Jefferson City, Mo.. He survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Byron Bonifield, Von Bonifield, and Mictch Bonifield and wife, Debbie, all of Hannibal; A daughter, Missy Pennewell and husband, Butch, of Monroe City, Mo.; A sister, Mary Lora Welty, of Phoenix, Ariz; five grandchildren, Halen Bonifield, Katie Pennewell, Mitchell Pennewell, Olibvia Pennewell and Nolan Pennewell; and three step-grandchildren, Michelle Brummell, Bobby Hood and Laura Mosley.

Mrs. Bonifield worked for the Hannibal Public School System and was secretary to the Assistant Principals Gene Hall and Larry Roberts for six years and was secretary to the Athletic Director, John Bringer, for five years.  After her retirement, she moved from the area to Texas, California, and back to Texas.  During that time she was a substitue teacher.  She was a life long member of the Hi Neighbor Club and Home Extension Club in Hull, Illinois.

Marilyn Rose Silvey Tatlow left this earth on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, in her home in Columbia after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at First Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Tatlow was born June 23, 1940, in Columbia to James M. and Ivis L. Silvey. She graduated from Hickman High School and attended Christian College and, after completing that program, obtained a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Missouri, later earning a master’s degree from Warren Wilson College.

Mrs. Tatlow had an active career in writing, serving as the editor of SlugFest Literary Magazine and as a contributing editor of Family Journal. She was a columnist and regular contributor for several papers and magazines including Missouri Life, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, the Chicago Daily Tribune and numerous local publications. She earned an award for best adult fiction in 1992 from the Missouri Writers’ Guild, a best historical article award from the guild and several other awards and honorable mentions. She is listed in "Who’s Who in U.S. Writers, Editors and Poets" and the "International Authors & Writers Who’s Who."

Mrs. Tatlow was heavily involved in community and civic activities. She served on the Missouri Arts Council, the board of directors for the Museum of Art and Archeology and, along with her husband, funded the Gary and Marilyn Tatlow Early Childhood Development Center. Mrs. Tatlow served on the Appellate Judicial Commission by the appointment of Gov. Mel Carnahan and had the task of choosing panels of candidates from which Carnahan appointed state appellate judges. Mrs. Tatlow served as a Missouri Mansion Preservation Board director and was the director of the Moberly Area Community College Foundation. She is a past president of the Randolph County League of Women Voters and is a former trustee of the Columbia College board.

Mrs. Tatlow enjoyed her family, traveling with her husband, the company of her friends and gardening and was an avid swimmer. Mrs. Tatlow enjoyed attending the theater, and the "Mizzou on Broadway" scholarship program was funded by a gift from her husband, Gary Tatlow, to the College of Arts and Science in honor of his wife.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 43 years, Gary Tatlow; three children, Jennifer Tatlow Golden, Phillip Tatlow and Rebecca Tatlow; her mother, Iris L. Silvey; a brother, James M. Silvey; four grandchildren, Jack Golden, Alice Rose Golden, Elizabeth Tatlow and Perry Tatlow; a son-in-law, Greg Golden; a daughter-in-law, Alison Tatlow; a niece, Sheryl Silvey; and two nephews, Steve and David Tatlow, as well as many cousins and grandnephews and grandnieces.

The family requests that all memorials be made in memory of Marilyn Tatlow to the "Mizzou on Broadway" program, care of the College of Arts and Science, University of Missouri.

Jack L. Garrett, 78, of Columbia passed away Feb. 14, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at Memorial Funeral Home, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Garrett was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Columbia to Jason and Pansy L. Chandler Garrett. On Sept. 1, 1961, he married Joy McKinzie in Columbia, and she survives.

He was a 1945 graduate of Hickman High School. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II in Germany. He retired from the University of Missouri department of health. He enjoyed golfing and bowling and was a member of the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame.

Survivors also include three children, Matt Garrett and wife Cindy, Christi Obermeier and husband Bob and Kelly Garrett, all of Columbia; and four grandchildren, Cameron Phillips, Drew Garrett, Jackson Obermeier and Cody Garrett.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Frederick Timothy Allen, 87, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at First Christian Church, with John Yonker officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Allen was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Columbia to Emerson D. and Annie L. Hubbard Allen.

On April 21, 1946, he married Dorothy Gwinn in Bolivar, and she survives. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot from 1940 to 1942. He was a 1936 graduate of Hickman High School, where he was a member of the 1935 undefeated football team and the 1936 state wrestling champion in the heavyweight class. He was a member of First Christian Church and a life member of the American Legion and the 40&8. While employed with the American Legion, he lobbied for the G.I. Bill of Rights and later served as a contact representative for the Veterans Administration in Joplin. In 1958, he came home to Columbia to run the family business, The Zero House, until it closed in 1971. Then he owned and managed The Sub Zero House until 1977. Afterward, he worked for Wal-Mart for 15 years. Mr. Allen also volunteered for the Veterans Administration.

Survivors also include his children, James C. Allen and wife Mary of Kearney, Joseph T. Allen and wife Nicole of Florissant and Susan G. Allen and husband Gerth Hansson of San Francisco; three sisters, Barthena Barnes and Ella Bass Miller, both of Columbia, and Margaret Paul of Dover, Del.; a brother, Sib Allen of Columbia; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Allen Meyer, Byrne Hansson, Martha Allen, Julia Allen and Jessica Allen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.

Jerome Wheeler, legendary local songwriter, musician, playwright, director and humorist, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at his home in south Columbia.

Jerome enjoyed regional acclaim in the Columbia area during the 1970s and ’80s through his musical and theatrical stage productions and achieved a top 40 placement for one of his songs, "Vibration 2.2," in the late 1960s.
There will be a gathering at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Unity Center in Columbia, followed by a memorial at 7 p.m.

Mr. Wheeler was born June 14, 1946, in Columbia to Fred E. and Trella Mae Sachsenheimer Wheeler. He attended high school in Versailles but returned to Columbia and graduated from Hickman High School in 1964. He studied theater at the University of Missouri.

Jerome’s contributions to the musical, cultural and environmental quality of the Columbia community were significant. He was integral in the foundation of a number of local and community organizations including KOPN Community Radio, BoCoMo Musicians Guild and MO River Cultural Conservancy.

In 1988, a handful of citizen activists stepped forward asking that Columbia reject an environmentally unsound proposal for the handling of waste water and in doing so proposed the wetlands, which resulted in the creation of Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area. Jerome’s song "The Pipeline Blues" was instrumental in creating the mind shift which enabled this to come about.

He appeared weekly on Lee Mace’s Ozark Opry television show during the early 1960s, and he was a member of many bands, including New Morning Singers, Celebrated Renaissance Band, Finkelstein and Katz, Cesspool Baker, Jerome Wheeler and the Catnip Mouse Band, The River Cowboys, The dot.commies, The Deli Llama Orchestra and others.

He was best known for having created and directed five plays, "Heaven’s Bright Babies," "King of Fools," "Ernwhazalot," "Gomez and the Catnip Mouse" and "B-Movies from Outer Space," which inspired the local artistic and musical community.

Survivors include his companion, Doireann O’Brien of Columbia; three children, Ruby Wheeler of Columbia, Tim Wheeler of Camdenton and Keenan O’Brien of Columbia; and a sister, Susan Lasher of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Daniel Warren Black, 52, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at his mother’s home in Columbia after a long diabetes-related illness.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Memorial Park Cemetery with Chaplain John Fussner officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home.

Dan was born in Marshall on Jan. 9, 1953, to Frank and Juanita Black. The family has lived in Columbia since 1967.

He graduated from Hickman High School and was a member of Parkade Baptist Church.

He spent most of his adult life in the lawn and garden business, having worked for Chemlawn, Atkins and Forever Green Nursery. He was a licensed arborist and also a licensed realtor.

Survivors include one son, Whitney Daniel Black; one brother, Tony Black and wife Jami; one sister, Rhonda Victor; his mother, Juanita Black-Morris; a stepsister, Cindy Stewart and husband Tom; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Black, in 1974 and his stepfather, Charles "Teeny" Morris, in 2002.

Brian Joseph DeFoe, 46, of Dallas, formerly of Columbia, passed away in February 2005 at his home.

Brian was an artist, outdoorsman, champion of the barbecue and retired Electron-Microscopy technician. He grew up in Columbia, attending West Junior High School and Hickman High School, and received his EM training at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Veterinary Medicine.

Survivors include his son, Steve; his daughter, Katie; his former wife and friend Peg McMahon, DVM; his parents, George and Dorothy; and his siblings, Phil, Ruth, Tom, Terry, Paul, Colette, Matt and Greg, and their families.

Fred Holmes Jr., 62, of Columbia passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eric Moore officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Holmes was born Oct. 2, 1942, in Columbia to Frederick Paul Holmes Sr. and Angie Smith Holmes. He graduated from Hickman High School in 1960. In January 1962, he married Jackie Lowery in Columbia. Fred served with the military police in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a police officer for the Columbia Police Department from 1966 to 1985. He was a member of New Horizons United Methodist Church, Woodsman Way and Mississippi Valley Soaring Club. Mr. Holmes enjoyed antiques and gardening.

Survivors include longtime companion Audrey Calcote; two sons, Curtis Holmes of Winter Haven, Fla., and Nathan Calcote-Holmes of Columbia; one brother, David Holmes of Columbia; one sister, Patricia Irwin of Columbia; two grandchildren, Pheobe and Berkley Holmes; and stepmother Ruth Holmes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Stephen Holmes.

Amie Christine Lee, 36, formerly of Columbia, left this life Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in Luverne, Minn.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dingman Funeral Home in Luverne.

Amie attended school in Columbia and graduated from Hickman High School in 1987.

Local survivors include her mother, Judy Cure, and her brother, Gene Lee, both of Columbia.

Frank L. Balsamo, 81, a lifelong resident of Columbia, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Lenoir Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Frank was born on July 27, 1923, in Columbia, the youngest son of Frank Balsamo Sr. and his wife Josephine. The elder Balsamo previously had arrived to Columbia in 1919 after immigrating from Italy in the late 1890s, thus becoming Columbia’s first Italian family. Frank Sr. - "Pop" - founded University Fruit Co., which became the family business for the next 60-plus years and employed all three of his sons and, from time to time, numerous grandsons.

Frank attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Hickman High School in 1942. He then entered the U.S. Army Air Forces, where he served during World War II.

After the war in 1946, he returned to Columbia and ultimately took his place with his father and two brothers, Salvatore and Ludwig, at the family business, which was located at 921 E. Broadway for 35 years. Originally a retail fruit and produce business, University Fruit Co. grew along with Columbia and increasingly became a wholesale distributor of fresh and frozen produce to restaurants, hospitals and residential facilities at the city’s colleges and the University of Missouri. The business expanded and moved in 1956 to the corner of Ash and Orr streets. While no doubt resembling a four-ring circus at times with all of the Balsamos running around in one place, the business grew and prospered, supporting all of Columbia’s growing Balsamo clan. Frank worked there for more than 35 years.

On June 16, 1948, Frank was married to Marian Louise Heisler at Sacred Heart Church, beginning a 56-year partnership that produced six children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as countless wonderful memories and a multitude of friendships.

Frank held a special place in the hearts of many and will be fondly remembered for his positive, outgoing personality and his sincere concern for others.

While mindful of the responsibilities of running a business and raising a large family, Frank always retained a boyish enthusiasm for his hobbies and interests. Lengthy periods of involvement with such activities as photography, model airplane flying, bowling, horses, weightlifting, etc., were the norm and often became the focus of family activity with many or all family members participating. He leaves behind a basement and several closets filled with his "toys." A large oil painting of Frank’s horse, "Red," painted by his son Mark, hangs prominently in the family home at 822 S. Greenwood.

In 1982, Frank left University Fruit Co., which was subsequently sold and ultimately ceased operation. While he had joined the family business out of loyalty and because that’s what you did in a close-knit Italian family, he was more than ready to move on. For his second career, he joined Columbia Public Schools and became chief custodian at Benton school. He worked at Benton from 1982-1997, the happiest years of his working life. His fondness for and attachment to the kids and faculty at Benton Elementary School were completely mutual as they contributed materially to each other’s lives. He retired from Benton at age 73 in 1997 but remained in contact with many teachers since that time.

Survivors include Frank’s wife, Mary Lou; five sons, Stephen of Glencoe, Ill., Frank of Stuart, Fla., Dan of Alton, Ill., Mark of Springfield and Andrew of Benton, Ill.; a daughter, Lisa Magruder of Folsom, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. With Frank’s death, only his wife, Mary Lou, remains a resident of Columbia to represent the Balsamo family, which has had a long history here as the city’s first Italian family.

Leslie C. Green, 86, of Columbia passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005.

Services will be held Monday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at Parker Funeral Service.

Mr. Green was born in St. Louis on Oct. 8, 1918. He grew up in Columbia at the home of his maternal grandfather, George B. Dorsey.

He graduated in 1936 from Hickman High School and in 1940 from the University of Missouri, majoring in art.

He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He played polo for the university, becoming a co-captain in his senior year. He also enrolled in advanced ROTC.

After graduation, he volunteered for active duty with the 2nd Cavalry Division as a second lieutenant in field artillery at Fort Riley, Kan. He participated in training maneuvers and, during his interim, returned to the University of Missouri as a polo coach, after which he returned to the 3rd Field Artillery in the 9th Armored Division. He served with that outfit in Europe as a battery commander. He was awarded the Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Belatedly, in 2001, his fighting unit, Combat Command A of the 9th Armored Division, was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

After the war, he was hired by Gardner Advertising Agency in St. Louis, the start of his ad career that lasted from 1946 to 1986. He worked for major consumer agencies in Washington, D.C., Detroit and Chicago, where he served as executive art director for major agencies.

He married JoAnn Williams in 1954, who preceded him in death in 1982. In 1966, Mr. Green and his family moved to Wausau, Wisc., to start a new agency, Kinzie and Green Advertising. Upon the departure of Mr. Kinzie, Mr. Green became the president of the agency. He was active in the community affairs, including Rotary, Boy Scouts and the United Way. In 1984, he married Marian Cavaness of St. Louis.

In 1999, Mr. Green and his wife moved to Columbia to continue their retirement years. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Leslie III of West Dundee, Ill., and Lawrence "Larry" of Alpharetta, Ga.; a daughter, Jennifer Brommet of Anza, Calif.; two stepsons, Kevin Cavaness of Jefferson City and Patrick Cavaness of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

Jessie Inez Turner, 66, of Columbia passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Columbia Regional Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Progressive Baptist Church, 702 Banks Ave., with the Rev. Roderick Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Warren Funeral Chapel, 12 E. Ash St. Burial will be at Columbia Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Columbia to Roy and Rowena Brooks Graves.

She was a member of Progressive Baptist Church, an usher, member of the greeters ministry and worked in the food pantry. She was formerly employed with Boone County voter registration.

Survivors include two daughters, CaSandra Edwards and Elisa Wright, both of Columbia; five sons, Maurice Wright Jr. and Rodney Wright, both of Columbia, Anthony Van Buren of Washington, D.C., David Givens of Las Vegas and Darrell LaMonte Graves of Atlanta; two sisters, Jo Ann Mitchell and Andrea Yancey, both of Columbia; four brothers, Roy Graves Jr. and Donald Graves, both of Denver, Anthony Yancey of Dallas and James Yancey of Phoenix; 23 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.

Carol Ann Chamberlin, beloved wife and mother, joined her Lord in Heaven March 22, 2005.  At age 59, she gained eternal victory over her battle with cancer while surrounded by the love of her family in her home.  Friends are welcome to visit with the family Saturday, March 26.  Please arrive by 9:30 a.m. for visitation as the memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her honor to the First Baptist Church of Lee's Summit, MO.

Carol was born May 26, 1945, to Norman and Minnie Ashlock in Amarillo, TX.  She grew up in Columbia, MO, with her older brother Tim Ashlock.  Childhood was full of life, love, and discipline which grew her into a woman of royal character.  Baptized at age 9 at Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia, MO, she was a faithful member and disciple of Christ.  This relationship with her Savior was the focal point of her life.  Everyone who knew her, knew her life's purpose was to glorify the Lord.

While attending college at the University of Missouri, she was pursued by many charming men.  But she gave her heart and love to only one, A. Howard Chamberlin, Marshall, MO.  They began their life together August 29, 1970, and shortly thereafter moved to Lake Lotawana, MO, where they plunged into the social atmosphere of sailing, dinner parties, skiing, and communion with friends.  With unmatched beauty and grace, Carol quickly became a favorite lake blonde and treasured friend.  Carol dedicated all her time and energy to her family.  A devoted wife, she left nothing for her husband to do in the house, for she was the best homemaker God could ever provide.  She raised three beautiful children: Whitney, Austin, and Ashley.  Her pride and joy was providing a warm and cozy home where every need and want was met.

Her heart also opened to each and every other child who came through her door.  From cookies to conversations filled with Godly wisdom, she loved them as her own.  Friends and family consider her a spiritual mentor, one of the lake's best cooks, and an Audry Hepburn-always dressed to the nines.  With a constant smile and joyful attitude, she served generously, loved deeply, and was a constant ray of sunshine.  She was preceded in death by her mother and father.  She is survived and dearly missed by her husband Howard; three children, Whitney, Austin, and Ashley; brother Timothy Ashlock and wife Carroll, Arnold, CA; and many loving family members.  She lived her life according to Romans 12:12: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer."  Her life and testimony will be forever remembered. Robert E. McDow, 88, of Bay City, Mich., passed away early Wednesday morning, March 23, 2005, at Bay Regional Medical Center.

Private funeral services with the family were Monday, March 28, at Gephart Funeral Home Inc. in Bay City, Mich. Private entombment was at Oakwood Mausoleum in Saginaw, Mich.

The son of the late William A. and Bessie Boone Roddy McDow was born Feb. 9, 1917, in Huntsdale. He resided in Columbia for 20 years and moved to Bay City in 1942.

He worked at the St. Louis shipyard in 1939 and Portsmouth Navy Yard in Virginia during the early years of World War II. He then moved on as welding inspector for the government at the Defoe Shipbuilding Yard in Bay City. After the war, he became a pipefitter for Dow Chemical Co. and also worked for Austin Construction and Johnson Pneumatic Controls and was a general foreman at the nuclear plant in Midland, Mich.

He was a member of the Bay City Consistory, a life member of Joppa Lodge No. 315, A.F&A.M., a life member of Lodge Council Chapter Consistory and was retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 85.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Mildred Virginia Hickam. They were married Dec. 24, 1939, at First Baptist Church in Columbia. Also surviving are his daughter, Virginia Louise and her husband, Robert William Mead, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Palmetto, Fla.; two grandchildren, Scott Michael McDow and his wife, Amey Walker McDow, of Saginaw and Kelly Lynn; three great-grandchildren, Seth, Hannah and Layne McDow; and two brothers-in-law, Lester Grimes and Joe Roberts.

He was also preceded in death by his son, William Richard in 1992 at 52 years of age, and his sisters-in-law Mary Margaret Sullins, Anna Katherine Roberts and Bonnie Faye Grimes.

Illamae Frances Brown, 90, of Columbia passed away Sunday, March 27, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Memorial Funeral Home, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born March 1, 1915, in Boone County to Crafford James and Matilda Belle Cornelison York. In 1933, she married Reno Kurtz in Boone County, and he preceded her in death. She later married A.D. Brown, on Nov. 4, 1946, in Kansas City, and he also preceded her in death. She retired as the Stephens College Bookstore manager after 25 years of employment. She was a member of New Providence Baptist Church and also a member of VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Illamae was in charge of organizing the family reunions for a number of years. She also enjoyed music and dancing.

Survivors include four children, Jerald Reno Kurtz of Lancaster, Calif., James LeRoy Kurtz and wife Sue of Columbia, Marilyn McCarty and husband Carlton of Columbia and Karen Kurtz of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Bob Brown and wife Jane of Amelia Island, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, Linda, Jeff, Lewis, Donna, David, Bret, Sandra, Laura, Karl, Denise, Loretta, Lisa and Christy; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Janice Berve and infant Doris Jean Kurtz; eight siblings, Asbury York, Osa A. York, Crafford O. York, Earl York, Mabel Minor, Glenn York and two infants; two grandchildren, Teresa Berve and Edward Suh; and a stepgrandson, Randall Scott Brown.

Ada Frost Hammock, 76, of Bashor, Kan., formerly of Columbia, passed away March 31, 2005, at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Harrington Funeral Home in Bonner Springs, Kan., with visitation at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Jamestown.

Ada was born July 16, 1928, in Columbia to Ray Frost and Linnie Mae Hurt Frost. She graduated from Hickman High School. In 1949, she married Ernest "Mickey" Hammock in Boonville. He preceded her in death in 2003.

Survivors include a sister, Venus Rader of Columbia; a cousin, Alvena Poe of Columbia; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Helen Frost, preceded her in death.

Natalie Tutt died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, in Riverdale, N.Y., after an extended illness.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia.

She was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Alice Tutt, longtime residents of Columbia. She was a graduate of Hickman High School and Stephens College.

She is survived by her siblings George Tutt of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Louise Tutt of St. Louis.

John W. Dunham, 71, of Fulton died Friday, April 8, 2005, at Lenoir Care Center.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 18, at First Christian Church in Fulton, with visitation at 1 p.m. Burial at Montgomery City Cemetery will be at a later date.

John was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Pierce City to Richard Edward and Margaret Palmer Dunham. He graduated from Hickman High School. He was active in the verse-speaking choir and football and was student body president his senior year. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Engineering, with a degree in mechanical engineering. While attending MU, he was a member of University Choir and Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. He married Marilyn "Kip" Maune Aug. 23, 1957, in Fulton.

John was a sales engineer with Trane Co. in Pittsburg. While there, he earned the designation of professional engineer. He moved to LaCrescent, Minn., in 1963 and worked in the corporate office of Trane Co. in Lacrosse, Wisc. After a career change in 1969, he became an area real estate broker and was active in the LaCrosse Board of Realtors and was state president in the early 1980s. While living in the Minnesota area for 27 years, John was a member/president of Lions Club and PTA, an active member of LaCrescent United Methodist Church and founder of the LaCrescent Development Corp. After a move back to Missouri, John worked with handicapped adults. He also tutored with the AmeriCorps program at Fulton High School. He was a member of First Christian Church in Fulton, was active with AA and worked as a volunteer with Ecumenical Ministries Hospice program.

Mr. Dunham is survived by his wife; one daughter, Michelle Beardsley and her husband, Doug, of Edina, Minn.; two sons, Jeffrey Dunham and his wife, Dexie, of Shell Lake, Wis., and Dr. Stephen Dunham and his wife, Shari, of Waterville, Maine; five granddaughters, Rachel, Megan, Annie, Sage and Grace; one grandson, Allen John "A. J."; two brothers, David Michael Dunham and his wife, Ruth, of Charleston, S.C., and Charles Dunham of San Diego; two aunts, Jeanette and Dorothy Palmer of Columbia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Joan; and two brothers, George and Dick.

Kay Rutledge, 71, of North Canton, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at her home.

She graduated from Christian College in Columbia and was a member of Community Christian Church and North Canton Lady Elks.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; daughters Lauri Cerreta and her husband, Mark, of North Canton and Janne Holm and her husband, Doug, of Greentown, Ohio; five grandchildren, Lindsey and Matt Holm and Sam, Anna and Joe Cerreta; sisters Virginia Vossen of Jefferson City and Joyce Walker of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph "Joe" Daly, 71, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Norman officiating. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Daly was born Sept. 6, 1933, in Boone County to Raymond and Edith Mae Martin Daly.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. On Oct. 27, 1956, he married Gail Calvin in Boone County. He was a heavy equipment operator in the construction business. He was a member of Huntsdale Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing the mandolin, woodworking and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife of Columbia; two daughters, Susie Sapp and husband Terry and Sheree Nichols and husband Chuck, all of Columbia; son Greg Daly and daughter-in-law Judy Daly of Columbia; seven grandchildren, T.J. John, Danny John, Jeff Daly, Josh Daly, Stephanie Daly, B.J. Coleman and Becky Nichols; and a great-grandson, Brayden Coleman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steve Daly.

Carl W. Morris, 90, of Yuba City, Calif., died April 17, 2005, at The Gardens in Yuba City.

Carl was born in Columbia and was a Yuba-Sutter resident for one year, formerly living in Debary, Fla. He was a retired fire department captain in Dearborn, Mich.

Edward Thomas Sutton Jr., 63, of St. Louis passed away Saturday, April 30, 2005.

He was born in Boone County on Jan. 11, 1942. With roots deep in the Missouri soil, he loved farming and the Missouri River. Ed was a sixth-generation Boone Countian born on the Sutton farm, now in the southwest section of Columbia.
Ed graduated from Hickman High School in 1960 and the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1966 after serving for two years in the National Guard. He was a talented and resourceful businessman, founding McBaine Solutions in 1986.

Ed was an ardent reader with extensive knowledge of the Civil War and was a talented craftsman. He devoted his life to serving others and helped many people.

Survivors include his wife, Kristine Carlson Sutton of Weldon Spring; two daughters, Elizabeth Carlson Sutton of Weldon Spring and Eaddy Grier Sutton of Hartland, Vt.; a grandson, Theo William Robey Sutton of Hartland, Vt.; sister and brother-in-law Anne Sutton and George Neal King of Tampa Fla.; five nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.

Curtis Avery, 85, of St. Peters, formerly of Fayette, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at St. Peters Manor Care Center.

He worked at United Engineering in Imperial for 40 years in quality control for aircraft parts. He was a member of St. Charles VFW Post No. 2866. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1950.

Dan E. Thompson, 59, of Kansas City passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Raytown.

Dan was born Oct. 23, 1945, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Joseph Ellis Thompson and Gladys Louise Talmage.

He grew up in Columbia and graduated from Hickman High School in 1963.

While Dan worked in the sales industry, he and his family often moved. He was known for his "one-liners."

He married Marry Ann Yearout on July 8, 1978. In November 1988, he was confirmed in Calvary Episcopal Church in Sedalia.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Curtis Thompson and his wife, Randa, of Clinton and Jeremy Thompson and his wife, Lisa, of Grain Valley; one daughter, Danielle Sebring and her husband, Curtis, of Blue Springs; one granddaughter, Chelsea Nicole Thompson of Clinton; a sister, Judy Ballard and her husband, Doug, of Columbia; and one brother, Harvey Neal and his wife, Diane, of Columbia.

Billy Berry Rader, 83, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at his home.

Mr. Rader was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Columbia to John W. and Eulala F. Berry Rader.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Margaret Stephenson Greenblatt, 85, of Boston died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Kindred Hospital in Brighton, Mass., after several years of failing health.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Gibson Funeral Home in Brunswick, with the Revs. Lanny Lybarger and Wendell Turner officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1920, in Columbia, the daughter of Hugh Edward Sr. and Doris Pryor Stephenson. Margaret graduated in 1937 from Hickman High School as valedictorian of her class.

While attending the University of Missouri-Columbia, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board and Delta Gamma sorority. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri.

She taught at a country school in Columbia before moving in 1962 to Brunswick, where she taught for 15 years before moving in 1978 to Boston, where she was employed at the Harvard Law Library.

She had been a member of Worthwhile Club in Brunswick and Brunswick Baptist Church, where she was active as a member of the Beacon Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Anglin and husband Gary of Brunswick; a son, Richard Greenblatt of Cambridge, Mass.; a brother, Hugh Stephenson Jr. and wife, Sarah, of Columbia; a nephew, Hugh "Ted" Stephenson III of Columbia; a niece, Ann Stephenson Cameron and husband Alex of Oklahoma City; a great-niece; a great-nephew; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Charles Edward Fox, 78, of Columbia died Monday, May 9, 2005, at his home.

He was an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a lifelong auto mechanic.

Jo Quintell Stemmons, 52, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Columbia.

Nathan Green Harris, 23, of Atwood, Kan., formerly of Columbia, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005, in Kansas.

Nathan was born Dec. 2, 1981, in International Falls, Minn., to Stephen J. and Cynthia B. Green Harris. He was a 2000 graduate of Hickman High School, where he was involved with FFA and wrestling. When he was younger, he was active in competitive gymnastics. Nathan’s passion was flying, and he was able to earn his private pilot’s license in Boonville during high school. He was a 2004 graduate of University of Minnesota-Crookston, with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural aviation, where he also obtained his commercial pilot’s license. He was a 2004 graduate of Ag-Flight Inc. of Bainbridge, Ga. He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Columbia and was attending Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atwood. Nathan participated in Civil War re-enactments as a member of Gates First Missouri Calvary.

Orville H. Pollock Jr., 82, of Olympia, Wash., formerly of Columbia, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2005 in Olympia.

Mr. Pollock was born September 28, 1922, in Columbia to Orville H. Pollock Sr. and Valma Hart Pollock. On March 16, 1962, he married Ruth C. Chapman and she preceded him in death in September 2004.

Harry Alvin Bishop, 68, of Buckeye, Ariz., formerly of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at West Valley Hospital in Goodyear, Ariz.

Memorial services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Grace Fellowship Bible Church, with Deacon Billy Turner officiating.

Mr. Bishop served with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and was chief of police in Hallsville for two years.

Robert D. Fountain, 77, of Bunceton died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at his home.

Robert was a house painter and painted for many years in Columbia.

He was a member of Boonville Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Edna Chaney Fountain of the home; five daughters, Brenda Dye of Bunceton, Linda Clark of Boonville, Margie McCubbins of Cleveland, Tenn., Connie Herbel of Huntsville and Julie Stallings of Columbia; one son, John Fountain of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, John A. Fountain of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.

KANZLER, Deborah Joy

Born August 2, 1952, in Joliett, IL, slipped from this mortal life surrounded by her family on June 3, 2005, in Sacramento, CA, after a courageous battle with breast cancer (her second bout). Debbie was a loving wife of nearly 31 years to her eternal companion and a devoted mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband J. Scott Kanzler, children J. Ryan, Daniel S., and T. Loren, daughters-in-law Megan & Bethanne, grandchildren Dallin & Leah, parents Arno and Blanche Pauling; her parents-in-law, John F. and Louise Kanzler; brothers David & wife Dana Pauling, Mark Pauling, Jon and wife Liz Pauling, sister Miriam Lytle, sister-in-law Debbie & husband Stan Astle, and Tami and husband Robert Kanzler-Tubbs, and many nieces and nephews.

Debbie will forever be remembered for her gracious service to her family, neighbors, and friends. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many church callings. She enjoyed developing her talents and being an instrument in our Heavenly Father's hands. She was a marvelous baker and made wedding cakes for 18 years. She was proficient at needlepoint, cross-stitch, and counter-cross-stitch. She loved to sew, write, draw (especially water color). She loved music and played the piano and was learning to play the Native American flute.  Debbie received a B.S. in Nutrition and Family Studies from BYU and spent the rest of her life nourishing her curious mind. She taught preschool for 12 years and she found joy in doing family history work and journal keeping.

She lived life to its fullest - filling her days with service. She endured to the end and was a great example to all. Our lives have truly been blessed for having known her. Many heartfelt thanks to all who helped support her family during this past year.

Walter L. Harrell, 46, formerly of Columbia, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2005, in Lawrence, Kan.

He was born Nov. 11, 1958, in Liberal, Kan., to Walter Harrell and Mary F. Bradford.

Jonna L. McClain, 48, of Columbia passed away Friday, June 10, 2005.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Adams officiating.

Mrs. McClain was born Aug. 15, 1956, in Kansas City to Bill and Bettie Gholson Asbury. On Aug. 19, 1997, she married Bill McClain in Denver.

James R. "Cornbread" Martin, 71, of Columbia passed away Friday, June 10, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Martin was born June 28, 1933, in Audrain County to James E. and Elizabeth F. Schultz Martin. He married Patricia Palan in 1956. In 1975, he married Marsheila Thompson.

He was a graduate of Hickman High School. He attended the University of Missouri from 1951 to 1952, leaving to serve with the U.S. Army during the Korean War in 1953 and 1954.

He returned to the university and graduated in 1956, where he played football and received Big 8 All Conference and Honorable Mention All-American status. He owned Corn’s Lake, which is remembered as a popular swimming and recreation area. He also owned The Huddle, which later became the Italian Village, Cornbread’s Café, The Columbia Donut Co. and several other businesses.

Survivors include a companion, Mary Coleman of Columbia; three sons, David Martin and wife Pamela, Jeffrey Martin and wife Tammy and Richard Martin and wife Ruth Ann, all of Columbia; two daughters, Julie Deering and husband Michael of Columbia and Billie Jean Martin of St. Louis; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Juanita Putnam.

Kenneth Dale Puckett, 68, of Columbia passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold Reisch officiating.

The family will have a private burial.

Mr. Puckett was born July 12, 1936, in St. Louis to Kenneth H. and Loretta Mae Crump. On April 5, 1980, he married Victoria June Rapp in Columbia, and she survives.

He served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist. He was also a member of the Special Business District board, the Central Columbia Association board, Jefferson Club and the CrimeStoppers Board; was a Boone County deputy sheriff; was a past member of the United Way of Columbia board and Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity; and was a Chamber of Commerce ambassador. Dale was president of Puckett’s Menswear Inc., founded in 1946 by his father. Many expansions over the years included Puckett’s for Women in 1983.

His other interests included real estate investments and achieving martial arts black belts in both tae kwon do and judo in 2000 and 2005. Dale enjoyed historic car restoration and boating at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Survivors also include a daughter, Elizabeth Joan Puckett of Columbia; a sister, Joan Puckett Atwood and husband Phil of Asheville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John Anderson Throckmorton, 86, of Hawley, Texas, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at his residence.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Community Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 1443 N. Second St. in Abilene, Texas, with Rufus Wilson officiating.
Mr. Throckmorton was born in Edina on Oct. 13, 1918, to William Elmer and Anna Lee Greenley Throckmorton. He grew up and attended school in Shelbina until the family moved to Columbia, where he graduated from Hickman High School and attended the University of Missouri. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a past worthy patron of OES and a member of First Christian Church. John was a rancher and stockman in purebred cattle, including horned and polled Herefords, and commercial cattle.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Throckmorton of Hawley, whom he married in San Angelo in 1981; sons John Gary Throckmorton and wife Carol of Litchfield Park, Ariz., Neil Throckmorton and wife Beckey of Abilene, and Russell Offringa and wife Tessia of Panhandle, Texas; two daughters, Vicki Wade and husband Dennis of Carthage and Christina Judge and husband Todd of Midlothian, Va.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, James W. Throckmorton; his first wife, Violet Throckmorton; his older brother, E. Lee Throckmorton; and a grandson, Rick Throckmorton.

Margaret Louise Hutchens Sisson, 91, of Columbia passed away Monday, June 20, 2005, at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Parker Funeral Service, with the Rev. John Yonker officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Margaret was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Columbia to O.R. and Eulalie Hutchens.

She graduated from Hickman High School in 1933 and from Orton Rice Business School before marrying Robert Sisson on Sept. 12, 1936. They were married almost 69 years.

As a homemaker, Margaret was involved in many women’s organizations and activities for her children. She was president of the Columbia chapter of AARP and president of the PTA at Benton Elementary. Margaret was a founding member of both Mothers Forum and Mother Singers. Margaret and Bob were members of the Saturday Night Dance Club.

Survivors include her husband, Bob; four sons, Robert H. Sisson of Alger, Mich., Gerald Sisson of Parker, Colo., Tom Sisson of Columbia and Sam Sisson of Evanston, N.Y.; one sister, Martha Mitchell of Columbia; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Bess.

Michael "Mike" Terrence Welch, 55, of Kansas City died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at home after a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, 75th and Main, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

He was born in St. Louis on Feb. 23, 1950.

He grew up in Columbia and graduated from Hickman High School.

He served in the U.S. Army and attended the University of Missouri.

He worked at the Tribune before moving to Kansas City in the late ’70s and began his career in the advertising industry. For the past 13 years, he had worked at Indox Services in sales and customer service.

Mike was a tremendous athlete who, more than anything, loved watching his daughter, Emily, excel at sports. He was very involved in St. Teresa’s Academy, where he had served as president of the booster club for the past two years. He shared his passion for girls sports with his family, coaching countless girls teams over the years, and was his daughter’s biggest fan.

Mike is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathi; his daughter, Emily; brother Kevin Welch of Columbia; sister Michelle Welch of Florida; in-laws Jerry and Nancy Venable; sisters- and brothers-in-law Leslie and Jay Tomlinson, Trish and Mike Barnes, and Michael Venable; and many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence "Bud" and Myrtie Welch.

Robert Franklin Kidwell Sr., 71, of Cornelius, N.C., died Monday, June 27, 2005, in the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital.

Winfert Glenn "Winn" Simpson, 48, of Columbia passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005, at University Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Raymond Hayes officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., with burial immediately following the services at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Winn (W.G.) was born July 26, 1956, in Kansas City to Venetia Allen Simpson and Charles Simpson. He graduated from Hickman High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in social work. He worked for the Juvenile Systems and later found a career as a surgical technician. He spent most of his life in Columbia and lived in Las Vegas for two years.

He was a member of the Methodist Men at St. Luke UMC and also served on the Usher Board. He was a devout church member. Winn enjoyed working with people, and he loved to travel. He possessed an enchanting gift of engaging people and had many friends.

Survivors include his stepfather, James Blythe of Columbia; his uncle and aunt, Charles and Carolyn Allen of Columbia; cousins Chris Allen and Chanel Allen of Columbia; aunt Grace Gooden and uncle Mark Simpson, both of Texas; aunts Gail Rowles and Marsha Young, both of Kansas City; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Reuben T. Jacobs Jr., 68, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Lake of the Ozarks.

Mr. Jacobs was born April 2, 1937, in Columbia to Reuben T. Jacobs Sr. and Vera Mae Bandy Jacobs. He was a lifelong Columbia resident. He attended Lee Elementary School and Jefferson Junior High School and graduated from Hickman High School in 1955. Reuben continued his studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Lincoln University.

On Aug. 26, 1962, he married Deanna Pace in Columbia. Mr. Jacobs was employed by the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 2001. He was recently employed part time at Regions Bank. A lifelong sports fan, he coached Little League Baseball and soccer and was an avid MU supporter, following the Tigers in all sports and holding MU basketball tickets for more than four decades.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Deanna Jacobs; two sons, Reuben Travis Jacobs of Columbia and Dru Pace Jacobs of St. Louis; six brothers and sisters, Bandy Jacobs and wife Jean of Columbia, Russell Jacobs and wife Muriel of Glendale, Calif., Mary Kathryn Sells and husband O.V. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Betty Aufranc and husband Curt of Columbia, Vera Coats and husband Russ of Lake Wales, Fla., and Dorothy Hatfield of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Jacobs.

Donald Lee "Duke" Kidwell, 72, of Columbia passed away Monday, July 11, 2005, in Columbia.

Services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, at Memorial Funeral Home, with an Elks Lodge service at 9:45 a.m. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a private burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Kidwell was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Boone County to John Patterson and Marie Brooks Kidwell. On Aug. 28, 1959, he married Juanita Fite in Columbia, and she survives. He served as a corporal on the Cruiser St. Paul in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He managed Eastgate Party Shop from 1974 to 1999. He was a member of American Legion Post 202, VFW Post 280 and a member and past exalted ruler of the Columbia Elks Lodge. He was a past Columbia’s Citizen of the Year and was the honoree for Cancer Research Center’s 2005 Jim Kidwell Memorial Gala.

Survivors include his mother, Marie Kidwell of Columbia; a daughter, Brenda Baker; and a granddaughter, Andi Baker, both of Columbia; a brother, Tom Kidwell of Midway; two sisters, Nancy Burkett of Lexington, Ky., and Janet Crimm of Fults, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and four brothers: Bob, Buddy, Jim and John Kidwell.

Robert (Bob) Baker, 73, died at St. Joseph Health Center, July 13, 2005. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m. at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS.

Born March 23, 1932 in Kansas City, son of Robert Blume and Justina Early Baker (both deceased), Bob grew up in Columbia, MO, graduating from MU with a BA and MA in Art and receiving a certificate of completion from the Parsons School of Design in NY.

He began his interior design career with Edward Keith Interiors, later moving to Thomas Price Interiors before opening Robert Baker Interiors in various venues in K.C. Bob was very active designing the interiors of many home, public and commercial projects and he received many awards and much acclaim for his work.

Bob is survived by an aunt, Uldine Petry of Crawfordsvill, IN; a brother, William; two nieces, Martha Baker Woods and Elizabeth Baker Pugh of California; a nephew of Cleveland, OH; and four grand nieces and nephews, Katy and Robert Woods and Rebekah and Jonathan Baker.

Doris Ellen Mountjoy, 76, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, at First Christian Church, with Dr. John Yonker officiating. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Mountjoy was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Columbia to W.I. and Clara Morganthaler McBride. She was a 1947 graduate of Hickman High School and 1949 graduate of Christian College. On Aug. 14, 1949, she married Robert Ray Mountjoy in Columbia, and he survives. She was employed with Allen’s Florist as a designer and later was employed for 20 years with Farm & Home Savings and Loan. She was a member of First Christian Church, where she served as a deacon. She was a member of the same bridge club for more than 30 years and an avid tennis player; she loved the outdoors and the Lake of the Ozarks. Doris enjoyed the time spent with her family, especially at the holidays.

Survivors also include her children, Michael Mountjoy and wife Janet, David Mountjoy and wife Diane, and Lynn Hall, all of Columbia, and Terry Burkett and husband Russ of Hallsville; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Mountjoy Mott of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Pat McGill of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, Jim McBride of St. Louis; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

John Paul Rackers, 26, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 21, 2005, at his home in St. Charles.

John was born Nov. 7, 1978, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Patrick and Claudia Rackers.

The family moved to Columbia in 1993. John was a graduate of Hickman High School, attended the University of Missouri and entered the field of retail sales, specializing in electronics and computers. His work included positions with Circuit City in Columbia and Ultimate Electronics in the St. Louis area, where he was recognized for his outstanding sales achievements.

John’s hobbies included enjoying and collecting music and movies, watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and barbecuing with friends, as well as keeping up with the latest in electronics technology.

Survivors include his parents, Patrick and Claudia Rackers of Columbia; a sister, Janelle Lutz and husband Rich of Columbia and their children, Hannah, Joseph, Leah, and an expected new baby; two brothers, Joseph Rackers and wife Marina of Columbia, S.C., and Jacob Rackers of Columbia; two uncles and their wives, John and Doreen Swenson of Fulton and Michael and Mary Swenson of Jefferson City; 10 cousins; and many close friends.

Aline N. Goodrick, 85, of Columbia passed away Monday, July 25, 2005, at her home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Goodrick was born May 26, 1920, in Boone County to Charles and Aletha Heath Sprague. On June 3, 1948, she married Robert Goodrick in Columbia, and he survives. She was a graduate of Hickman High School. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Raymond Washington Wright III, 60, of Kansas City, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Watkins Brothers Memorial Chapel in Kansas City, with visitation at 9 a.m. Burial will be at Clark Fork Cemetery in Columbia.

Robert William Martin, 45, of Columbia died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at University Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Woodcrest Chapel, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. A private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bob was born March 16, 1960, in Seattle to Dr. Richard and Carole Martin. He graduated from Hickman High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University. He received a master’s degree in business from the University of Colorado. He married Cheryl Mehle on July 24, 1982, in Columbia, and she survives.

Bob was an active member of Woodcrest Chapel. He served as treasurer on the board of K-Life, an interdenominational Christian ministry for youths. He lived his faith every day.

Bob was an owner-operator of McDonald’s Restaurants and president of Martin Restaurants Inc. He was also past president of the Central Missouri advertising co-op for McDonald’s and served on the McDonald’s Regional Leadership team. Bob was a former member of the Columbia Public Schools Foundation board.

At the age of 18, he was named the outstanding sailor for a six-state area by the Central States Sailing Association. He restored vintage British sports cars and was the current national champion, E-type, for the Jaguar Clubs of North America. Bob enjoyed snow skiing, cycling, and golfing. He also loved throwing Frisbees to his black Lab, Brooke.

Above all, Bob loved and valued his family. In addition to his wife, Cheryl, he is survived by twin daughters, Lauren and Lindsay of Columbia. He also is survived by his parents, of Columbia; a brother, Mike Martin and his wife, Bonnie, of Columbia, S.C.; his parents-in-law, Doug and Lyn Mehle of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Mark Mehle and his wife, Kate, and three daughters, Molly, Susie and Katharine, of Columbia.

Ronald Dudley Parmer, 64, of Columbia passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at his home.

He was a member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church, Handy Mans Club, vice grand and member of IOOF Lodge and a member of Teamsters Local No. 883.

Glenn Harrison Bennett, 73, of Columbia died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at Nashville Cemetery in Sapp.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia.

Mr. Bennett was born March 15, 1932, to William H. and Mary E. Davis Bennett in Boone County. On April 11, 1953, he married Florence Nadine Crane in Ashland, and she survives.

He was a member of Nashville Baptist Church. Glenn enjoyed all sports, especially St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

His many hobbies included fishing, bowling and playing guitar.

Raymond R. "Rudy" Hartley passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Loma Linda VA Hospital.

Rudy retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant. He served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.
