SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — "Louie Louie" made money money, but the Kingsmen haven’t received any royalties for at least 30 years. A federal appeals court ruled yesterday the band should.

The band that recorded the hit version of the rock standard in 1963 signed a contract in 1968 that was supposed to provide the members with 9 percent of the profits or licensing fees from the record.

They never got a cent, said the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1993, the Kingsmen, some of whom are still on tour, sued Gusto Records and GML, who held the rights to the recording. A federal judge rescinded the contract, granted the musicians the right to all royalties from the time they sued and held the companies in contempt when they refused to surrender the master recording.

In a 3-0 ruling, the appeals upheld the judge’s decisions in favor of the Kingsmen.

"I’m thrilled for the band that they’re finally going to get what is due to them," said Jeanette Bazis, a lawyer for the five members of the group who filed the suit. She said the Kingsmen, including three of the original members, performed Thursday night to a sellout crowd in Minneapolis.

Bazis said recent sources of royalties include the movie "Mr. Holland’s Opus," the television show "3rd Rock from the Sun," Coca-Cola commercials and compilation albums.

Total royalties due since 1993 are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, said Scott Edelman, another lawyer for the Kingsmen.

"Louie Louie," written by rhythm-and-blues artist Richard Berry as a Jamaican love song in 1955, has been recorded more than 1,000 times. The hit version, by the Kingsmen in 1963, featured Jack Ely’s almost-incomprehensible lead vocal — shouted into a microphone 12 feet above his head in a primitive studio.

Rumors on high school campuses that the lyrics were obscene prompted a federal investigation, which concluded that the words were unintelligible at any speed. Berry’s actual lyrics, sung by Ely, were a sailor’s lament to a bartender named Louie about his lost love and contained not a hint of impropriety.

Berry sold the rights to all his songs for $750 in 1956 but got $2 million in royalties for "Louie Louie" 30 years later with the help of an artists’ rights group. The Kingsmen’s contract was supposed to give them a percentage of the profits from their version, which has been included in various revival records and films over the years.

The court said it was undisputed that "the Kingsmen have never received a single penny of the considerable royalties that ‘Louie Louie’ has produced over the past 30 years."

It was also undisputed that the companies sued by the band "have breached their agreement repeatedly," the court said.

Pearl Ozella Sapp, 77, of Hallsville died Monday, March 8, 1999, at her home in Hallsville.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at the funeral home.

Ms. Sapp was born June 25, 1921, in Higbee to Charles Edward and Mary Ethel Mitchell Carter.

She retired in 1986 from employment in food service at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She had also worked for Ranch House, Harris’ Cafe, Hathman House, Posthouse Cafeteria, Camps Pin Oak, Wokonda in the Ozarks and Grandmother’s Pantry.

Survivors include two foster children, Wanda Pearl Hoffman of Columbia and Edward Lee Sutton of Fort Smith, Ark.; and two sisters, Veneta Cochran of Columbia and Nellie Harrison of Hallsville.

She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

Omer Lay, 84, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, in Columbia.

Mr. Lay was born Oct. 3, 1914, in Solo to Andrew Jackson and Ellen Owen Lay.

He married Ruth Rees on May 22, 1937, in Houston, Mo., and she preceded him in death.

He was minister of Rush Hill Community Church from 1950-58 and minister of Bethel Baptist Church from 1958-65. He was co-founder and owner of Lay’s Garden & Gifts.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Lay of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Bonnie Bourne of Columbia and Sharon Lay of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Six brothers preceded him in death.

Mr. Gray was born Aug. 2, 1906, in Fredericktown to Claude McCluer and Charolette Head Gray.

He retired from employment as a loan officer for Farm & Home Administration in 1976. He was a member of the Central Methodist College Hall of Fame.

She was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Maupin was born Sept. 29, 1918, in Boone County to David and Annie Frances Phillips Hudson. On June 15, 1938, she married Malcolm Maupin in Boone County, and he preceded her in death.

Obituary: William Bedford

Dr. William Charles Bedford, 88, of Springfield, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Balanced Care in Springfield.

A memorial service was held Thursday, June 3, at South Street Christian Church in Springfield. Arrangements were under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield.

He married Mary Alice Elliott, and she preceded him in death.

He received a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and also received a doctorate degree in American studies from MU. He had been employed as a music teacher at Columbia College and was dean of faculty from 1956-63. He was also employed as the organist for First Christian Church for many years. He taught English literature at Southwest Missouri State University from 1966-79. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and Phi Mu fraternity, served on the Faculty Senate at SMSU and was member and Emeritus Elder of South Street Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Larry Bedford of Springfield; a daughter, Susan Bedford Fletcher of Springfield; and two grandsons.

Frederic Henry Curtis, 84, of Rockford, Ill., died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Cor Mariae Center in Rockford.

Mr. Curtis was born April 4, 1915, in Carrollton to Frederick Henry Curtis and Mabel Maureen Miller Curtis.

He married Betty Marie Mathews on Sept. 3, 1938, in St. Louis, and she survives.

He was a long-time member of Hallsville United Methodist Church and Olivet Christian Church. He was a member of Hallsville Lodge 336. He was employed as an auditor for the University of Missouri until his retirement.

Survivors also include a daughter, Patricia Curtis Belzey of Rockford, Ill.; a son, David Curtis of Warrensburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Mr. Creason was born July 11, 1914, in Linneus to Ivory and Hester Clove George Creason.

He married Edna Ruth Zumwalt on Aug. 3, 1936, in Columbia, and she survives.

He served in the U.S. Army Infantry. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 202 and the International Order of Odd Fellows. He worked as an automotive technician and owned and operated his own business for 58 years.

Survivors also include two sons, Arlen Lee Creason of Oklahoma City and John Paul Creason of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Sandra Bench of Lake Ozark and Mary Anne Crane of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.

Frances Marguerite Shirky Asel, 80, of Columbia, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Columbia Manor.

Mrs. Asel was born April 7, 1918, in Columbia to Samuel Bryan and Marguerite Shirky.

She married Norman Asel on Aug. 2, 1942, and he survives.

She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1941 and taught at Ridgeway School. She worked for the Missouri Historical Society at Ellis Library for many years. She was also active in the Pi Beta Phi Alumni organization, Chapter AZ of PEO and the Cecile Taylor Circle of King’s Daughters.

Survivors also include two daughters, Joann Asel Rea of Potomac, Md., and Kristen Smith of Leawood, Kan.; one son, Donald Asel of Columbia; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Cassity was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Columbia to Benjamin and Beulah Cassity.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1937 and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was associated with J.E. Hathman Construction Co. for many years. He was a lifetime member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Tate of Gallatin, Linda Wilmeth of Phoenix and Christy Schafer of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He had been employed by the University of Missouri Physical Plant for 26 years. He was a member of the Huntsdale Baptist Church.

Mildred Catherine Poe, 78, of Columbia died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Poe was born June 20, 1921, in Boone County to William Bennett and Mary Davis Bennett. On Dec. 18, 1939, she married Stanley Poe in Ashland, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 1999.

She was a member of Huntsdale Baptist Church.

Nancy Evelyn Washington, 85, of Herndon, Va., died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, in Arlington, Va.

Mrs. Washington was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Hallsville to John and Winnie Rogers Coates.

She married William Washington on Aug. 12, 1934, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church and attended Douglass High School. She moved to Herndon, Va., in 1978.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Canton of Columbia, Billye Ballenger of Los Angeles, Connie Gilbert of Reston, Va., and Bonita Washington-Anderson of Herndon, Va.; two sons, John Washington of Columbia and Larry Washington of Kansas City; a brother, John Henry Coates of Columbia; four sisters, Etta Bannister of New York, Laura Davis and Dora Williams, both of Columbia, and Winnie Freelon of Bremerton, Wash.; 26 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, two sisters, a brother and a grandchild.

Mary Burton

Mary Frances Burton, 83, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Columbia Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Jarrett officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Burton was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Huntsville to James Daniel and Anna Ruth Carter. On March 3, 1942, she married Jesse Burton in Huntsville, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Huntsville High School in 1934, then attended Moberly Junior College and the Kirksville College of Beauty Culture. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Huntsville for 20 years. She was a library clerk in Columbia Public Schools from 1964 to 1986.

Mrs. Burton was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons, Carter Jay Burton and Bob Guthrie, both of Columbia; two daughters, Beverly Anne Carmichael and Mary Guthrie, both of Columbia; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister.

Raymond Jennings

Raymond D. Jennings, 81, of Centralia died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Jennings was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Centralia to Herman and Katie Wainscott Jennings.

He married Florence Millett on Nov. 23, 1946, in Columbia, and she survives.

He retired after several years as a plumber at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Virgil E. Biesemeyer, 84, of Columbia died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Biesemeyer was born April 8, 1915, in New Franklin to Simon and Otillie Schroer Biesemeyer.

He had worked as shop foreman for Prigmore Chevrolet in Boonville, Nathe Chevrolet in Columbia and International Harvester in Columbia.

Mr. Biesemeyer was a member of Columbia United Church of Christ and the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Edna Irene Bower Ford, 96, of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Boone Retirement Center.

Mrs. Ford was born Oct. 24, 1903, in Kyle, Texas, to Edward George and Elizabeth Hannah Will Bower.

She married Miles Emmitt Ford on Aug. 1, 1926, in Shelbyville, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church. She grew up in Bethel and was a graduate of Shelbyville High School and the University of Missouri.

She was a 4-H leader in Deer Park and Gillaspy. She was also a member of the Boone County Extension Club, Extension Council, Farm Bureau and Retired Teachers Association. She taught at Ashland Elementary School from 1955-56, at Vawter Elementary School from 1956-57, at Rock Bridge Elementary School from 1957-66 and at Union Elementary School in Union from 1966-69.

Survivors include a son, Duane Ford of Columbia; two daughters, Alene Lewis and Bernita Bartel, both of Columbia; a brother, Kenneth Bower of Cheshire, Conn.; two sisters, Eunice Bower Smith of Columbia and Orletta Bower Setzer of Springfield, Va.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son and a sister.

John "J.W." Fox, 79, of Columbia, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, in Columbia.

Mr. Fox was born June 22, 1920, in Boone County to John "Jack" and Hattie Kennedy Fox.

He married Minnie Colvin on Sept. 27, 1941, in Boone County and she survives.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a fireman with the Columbia Fire Department for 34 years, retiring as battalion chief. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.

Ruth Marie Breedlove Davison, 62, of Columbia, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Davison was born Dec. 7, 1937, in Boone County to William Woodson and Anna Frances Coleman Breedlove.

She married Edward Davison on Nov. 18, 1955, in Boone County and he survives.

She was a member of Christian Chapel and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Margaret Grayson Galt Neate, 92, of Columbia died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at University Hospital.

Charles Laverne Mutrux, 75, of Salt Lake City and formerly of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Salt Lake City.

Mr. Mutrux was born March 9, 1925, in Cassville to Harold Alfred Mutrux and Effie Mae Mutrux.

He served in the Army as a medical surgical technician. He attended the University of Missouri, where he majored in agriculture. He worked for Vita Fresh and later for Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, where he was a custodian.

Mr. Mutrux was an ordained elder with the Church of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include six children, Diana Howard, Jennifer Arnold, Carolyn Kemp, Judith Roundy, Ross Mutrux and Susan Sperry; two brothers, J.D. Mutrux and Bob Mutrux; 40 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Clara Marie Erickson, 88, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, in Columbia.

Mrs. Erickson was born Jan. 13 1913, in Granby to John Bryant and Ruby Elvira Miller McNeely.

She married Leonard Erickson on June 4, 1944, in Granby and he preceded her in death.

She had taught and was assistant to the principal at Parkade Elementary School for 20 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was active in the Little Bonne Femme Baptist Association. Mrs. Erickson was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she received the Delta State Achievement Award in 1999 and was a member of Boone County Unit of Retired Teachers. In 1998, she received the Life Service Award from Southwest Baptist University.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Skipper of Columbia and Patricia Ann Parish of Amite, La.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Norman Donald Asel, 83, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Lenior Health Care.

Services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Parker Funeral Home, 22 N. Ninth St., with the Rev. Frederick Thayer officiating.

Dr. Asel was born on Jan. 30, 1918, in Washington, Mo., to Donald Norman and Elsa Mauschmann Asel.

He married Frances Shirky on Aug. 2, 1942, and she preceded him in death.

He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, did his surgery internship at St. Louis City Hospital and finished his residency in dermatology in 1950 at City Hospital of Cleveland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Dr. Asel established the first division of dermatology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and received the distinguished service award for his efforts in 1983. In addition, he had a private practice with Tom Darnell and Jerry Foote. He was a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and Missouri Dermatological Society. He was president of the Boone County Medical Society in 1972. He also was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a son, Donald Asel of Columbia; two daughters, Joann Asel Rea of Potomac, Md., and Kristen Asel Smith of Leawood, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Linda Denise Windsor, 47, of Columbia died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Mrs. Windsor was born Nov. 20, 1953, in Tacoma, Wash., to Cecil and Emma Seifert Windsor Jr.

She married Floyd Windsor III on March 10, 1984, in Columbia, and he survives.

She had been employed as the purchasing agent for the city of Columbia for nearly 20 years. She was past president of the Missouri Association of Public Purchasing, where she received several certificates of recognition. She was a member of Christian Chapel and active with the Salt and Light Youth Group and Speed the Light Ministries. She had been a volunteer reserve police officer for the Columbia Police Department.

Survivors also include her mother, Emma Stover of Boonville; a son, Jonathan Windsor of Columbia; a stepson, Jason Windsor of Alexandria, Va.; a stepdaughter, Stacie Friedrich of Columbia; a brother, Rick Sedgwick of Jamestown; five sisters, Darlene Smith of Kansas City, Teresa Windsor of Boonville, Valorie Windsor of Hartsburg, Letha Scott of Bunceton and Jackie Cockrell of Sturgeon; and four grandchildren.

He married Alice Elizabeth Heffernan on Jan. 23, 1937, in Springfield, and she preceded him in death. He later married Jane Kellogg Hill on May 30, 1981, and she survives.

He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield in 1929 and was active in the insurance business from 1929 until his retirement in 1972.

Jane E. Schuppan, 81, of Columbia died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Schuppan was born March 11, 1920, in Boonville to Truman and Grace Oerly Swanstone.

She married Gilbert Schuppan on Nov. 2, 1941, and he preceded her in death.

She attended Cooper County rural schools, starting with second grade at Highland School at the age of 4. She spent the next six years at Fairview School and later graduated from Boonville High School as salutatorian.

She attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and Chillicothe Business College.

Mrs. Schuppan lived most of her life in Columbia. She was a member of the First Christian Church and a longtime member of the Cosmo Pals. She was administrative secretary to the personnel officer in the state office of the Division of Welfare Services. She retired in 1945 to raise her family.

Leroy Fisher, 79, of Columbia died of complications from leukemia, Sunday, April 22, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Fisher was born April 30, 1921, in Elkhart, Ind., to Mainem Fisher and Beulah Ann Ramsey Fisher.

He married Virginia Roth in 1945.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s near Medaryville, Ind., and served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Fisher worked as a pressman in several printing companies and owned Fisher Marine, a hunting and fishing store, in Three Rivers, Mich. After moving to Columbia in 1959, he was head of the maintenance department at the University of Missouri-Columbia Memorial Student Union. After retirement, he owned a heating and air conditioning business.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Bedigie and Ellen Kackley, both of Columbia; a brother, Estel Fisher of Bristol, Ind.; four sisters, Katherine Copeland of Mentone, Calif., Doris Garren of Avon Park, Fla., Carol Geoghegan of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Virginia Longden of Greencastle, Ind.; two granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters.

She married Frederic Henry Curtis on Sept. 3, 1938, in St. Louis, and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Curtis was a receptionist for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She was president of the Residents Council at Cor Mariae.

She was a long time member of the Hallsville United Methodist Church and Olivet Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Curtis Belzey of Rockford, Ill.; a son, David Curtis of Warrensburg; a sister, Dorothy Tinnea of Oconomowac, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret E. O’Bryan, 82, of Columbia died Friday, June 8, 2001, at her home.

Mrs. O’Bryan was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Kansas City, to John and Viola Cavin Naylor.

She married Dr. Kenneth O’Bryan on July 2, 1969, and he preceded her in death.

She was employed as an administrative assistant for the University of Missouri-Columbia until her retirement.

Mrs. Williams was born July 27, 1925, in Columbia, to John Coates and Winnie Rogers Coates.

She married Sehon Williams, and he survives.

She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. church, a member of Stewardess Board No. 1, former president of P.C. Crews Missionary Society and a member of Chancel Choir. She worked as a pink lady at Boone Hospital Center. She was formerly employed as a telephone operator for the U.S. General Services Administration. She graduated from Douglass High School in Columbia.

Survivors also include two sons: Larry Sehon Williams of Columbia and Ronald Guintin Williams of Kansas City; two daughters, Senora Mae Christopher of Oklahoma City and Bobbia Claudette Banton of Indianapolis Ind.; one brother, John Henry Coates of Columbia; two sisters, Etta Bannister of New York and Laura Minta Davis of Columbia; fourteen grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, one brother and three sisters.

Virginia Elizabeth Southard Mutrux, 78, of Salt Lake City, Utah, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Columbia Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 904 Old Highway 63 S.

Mrs. Mutrux was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Columbia to Ross Orville and Araminta May Bradley Southard.

She married Charles Mutrux in 1949, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include five daughters: Diana Howard, Carolyn Kemp, Judith Roundy, Susan Sperry, all of the state of Utah, and Jennifer Arnold of Columbia; one son, Ross Mutrux of Columbia; one brother, Howard Southard; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Joe Sanford Cunningham, 85, of Columbia died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

He was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Columbia to Luther Lee and Eve Jane Fortney Cunningham.

He married Leeta Dell Lane in 1935, and she survives. On June 2, 2001, they celebrated 66 years of marriage.

He was a 1934 graduate of Hickman High School and later studied art, drafting and architectural design. He began a career as a draftsman with A.B. Chance in Centralia. Later, he was a manager of LaCrosse Lumber Co. in Columbia. He was a home builder for 45 years. In retirement he restored antiques, built fine cabinetry and raised red angus cattle.

He was a member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church for 46 years. He also was a member of Twilight Lodge No. 114 AF&AM, Moolah Temple, St. Graal Commandry No. 12 KT, Royal Arch Mason, Columbia Chapter No. 17, RAM, State Historical Society of Missouri, Boone County Historical Society Museum and Midway Optimist Club.

Survivors include a son, Sanford L. Cunningham of Columbia; a daughter, Jane O. Bensussen of Santa Monica, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He served with the Army in World War II. He was a salesman for Sears and retired in 1976 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Elks Club, the Three $ Club and VFW Post 280 of Columbia.

John Michael Ohman, 56, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Valley Medical Center in Santa Clara, Calif.

Burial will be in the Columbia Cemetery with a private family service under the direction of Parker Funeral Service.

Mr. Ohman was born Nov. 1, 1945, to Victor A.G. and Marian M. Ohman.

He graduated from Hickman High School and attended Drury College in Springfield.

Survivors include his parents; a son, Christopher Ohman of the state of California; a daughter, Jennifer Herron, of the state of California; a brother, Joseph E. Ohman of Columbia; a sister, Annie O. Ruh of Harrisburg; and a granddaughter.

Gladys Weinberg, 92, of Columbia died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center.

Private graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Columbia Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Weinberg was born Dec. 27, 1909, in New York City to Israel and Carrie Dreyfus Davidson.

She married Saul S. Weinberg in 1942, and he preceded her in death.

She received a doctorate in archaeology from Johns Hopkins University.

She was one of the world’s foremost authorities on ancient and medieval glass. After World War II, she served in Europe in the Secret Service.

She was editor of Archaeology magazine and cofounder of the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She was first the curator of Ancient Art and then assistant director of the museum from 1962 to 1977. She was made an honorary life member of the Archaeological Institute of America and was a recepient of its Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement. She recieved the Percia Schimmel Award from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Survivors include a daughter, Miriam Dyak of Seattle.

Georgia Marie Banks Koletzke, 56, passed away Friday, December 14, 2001, in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Koletzke was born July 15, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to Ralph Richard Anthony Banks and Helen Copeland.

Georgia is survived by her three daughters; Robin Koletzke, Jacqueline Mancuso and her husband Anthony, Stephanie Donato and her husband Jack; her two sons, Matt Koletzke and wife Stacy and Mike Koletzke, mother, Helen Copeland, brother Raymond Copeland and wife Cindy, sister Pam Waldron and husband Preston and three grandchildren.

She is also survived by her children's father, Robert Koletzke, her former husband and dearest friend, Michael Short, as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

Before establishing her own medical billing business, Mrs. Koletzke retired from Enron Corp. in 1992 after 27 years of employment.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree from Purdue University. He came to the University of Missouri in 1939 as a professor of floriculture in the Horticulture Department.

He was a member of the First Christian Church for 62 years and a Kiwanis Club member for 55 years.

William R. Griffin, 77, of Columbia died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at University Hospital.

Mr. Griffin was born March 6, 1924, in Jefferson City to Guy and Alvina Staihr Griffin.

He married Jean B. Griffin, and she survives.

He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He served in the Army and received three Bronze Stars for bravery.

He moved to Columbia 44 years ago from Carthage. He was a member of Broadway Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge No. 114, the 17th Airborne Division Association and the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Howard Milton Ruth, 92, of Roseville, Calif., formerly of Columbia, died Sunday, April 21, 2002, in Roseville.

Mr. Ruth was born in Carrington, N.D., on July 13, 1909, to John and Catherine Helmann Ruth.

He married Margaret Eulalie Knudson on Nov. 24, 1938, in Atwood, Wisc., and she survives.

He graduated from Appleton High School in Appleton, Wisc., in 1928, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a handyman. He retired in 1973 as service engineer for American Can Co.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruth were residents of Columbia from 1962 until 1981 and were members of several local square dancing clubs.

Thomas Nichols Putnam III, 57, of Las Vegas, and formerly of Columbia, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at his home.

Services will be held at Palm Green Valley Mortuary in Las Vegas. Burial will be in Calvary Episcopal Church Memorial Garden in Columbia. Arrangements are pending.

Mr. Putnam was born Aug. 11, 1944, in Alexandria, Va., to Thomas Putnam II and Jane Seybold Putnam.

He graduated from Kemper Military Academy in Boonville and earned a degree in landscape agriculture at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and worked as a landscaper for more than 30 years.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Putnam IV and Justin Putnam, both of Las Vegas, and David Putnam of Rockford, Ill.; and a sister, Joel Seybold Putnam of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mildred Kemper, 87, of Columbia died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at Boone Retirement Center.

Mrs. Kemper was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Boone County to Walter and Sarah Sallie Ann Fortney Rader.

She married Glenn Kemper on Feb. 3, 1934, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death after more than 63 years of marriage.

She was a member of Red Top Christian Church in Hallsville for 55 years. She worked for University Hospital from 1935 to 1939 and as a seamstress for Arcel Garment Factory from 1955 to 1957. She raised Pekingese dogs and finished four dogs to championship. She boarded dogs from 1971 to 1978, then sold the farm and moved to Columbia.

Survivors include three daughters, Kay Mitchell of Springfield, Marilyn Sunderland of Riverton, Utah, and Carolyn Kemper of Columbia; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Iola Irene Trumbower, 88, of Columbia died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Trumbower was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Milbank, S.D., to John and Ethel Hyatt Vipond.

She married Capt. William Trumbower on Nov. 7, 1940, in Oak Park, Ill., and he preceded her in death.

She grew up in Ortonville, Minn., and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1932. She graduated from Eitel Nursing School in Minneapolis in 1936. She finished her postgraduate work at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, N.J., in 1938. She took the position of head nurse of the newborn nursery at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She moved with her husband to Columbia in 1960. She worked at the University of Missouri-Columbia Medical Center from 1960 to 1978. She worked for Dr. John Henzel from 1978 to 1994.

She was active in Calvary Episcopal Church.

She was a member of the Missouri Nurses Association.

Survivors include a son, William Trumbower of Columbia; a daughter, Mary Swearingen of Columbia; a brother, Harold Vipond of Windsor, Calif.; and three grandchildren

William "Billy" Wright, 80, of Columbia died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Columbia.

Mr. Kinney was born Nov. 10, 1935, in Blackwater to Louis Kinney and Leona Whitley Kinney.

He married Glenda K. Branham on Aug. 6, 1971, in Sedalia and she survives.

Mr. Kinney was a member of the Church of Christ in Longmont, Colo. He previously lived in Tucson, Ariz. He moved to Lafayette, Colo., in 1993. He was inducted into the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame in 1997.

Survivors include three sons, Louis Kinney of Des Moines, Iowa, Kirklin Kinney of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kelton Kinney of Lafayette, Colo.; eight daughters, Sonja Barnes and Evelyn Coleman, both of Columbia, Alissa Walker, Donna Walker, Regina Wright and Lynette Weatherby, all of Des Moines, Iowa, Robin Coleman of Seattle, Wash., Kecia D. Kinney of Lafayette; a brother, Marvin Kinney of Columbia; four sisters, Carole Jones and Ann Wright, both of Columbia, Dorothy Palmer of Colorado Springs and Stella Day of St. Louis; and 29 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

Evangeline Barnhart, 91, of Laurie, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, June 3, 2002, in Laurie.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Memorial Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Gravois Mills United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim Blue and Sid Robbins officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 W. Business Loop 70.

Mrs. Barnhart was born Oct. 5, 1910, in Boone County to William and Ida Mae Watson Thornton.

She married Edgar Vernon Barnhart on Nov. 2, 1929, in Fulton, and he preceded her in death.

She was a seamstress, and she worked in the clothing industry for many years in Columbia. She had been employed at Cards Plus in Laurie for the last nine years.

She was a member of Gravois Mills United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star No. 290 in Columbia and the Rebecca Lodge in Columbia.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Kephart of Holden and Janice Copeland of Laurie; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, William Vernon Barnhart and Kenneth Barnhart; and a sister, Jewell McBaine.

Roxie Estill Winterhalter, 79, of Hallsville died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, in Memorial Park Cemetery, 1217 W. Business Loop 70, with the Rev. Tom Adams officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Winterhalter was born March 12, 1923, in Boone County, to William Dow and Rosa Lee Benedict Nichols.

She married Robert Thomas Winterhalter on April 7, 1943, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Lee Hickam of Hallsville, and Deborah Fay Martin of Millersburg; two sisters, Mae Dean Robinson of Columbia, and Ruth Toalson of Mexico, Mo.; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Milton James Nichols and Odean D. Nichols; and three sisters, Stella Smith, Martha Ellen Carlos and Josephine Allen.

Solomon Wilson "Sol" Bryson, 89, of Columbia died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 26, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the funeral home.

Mr. Bryson was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Boone County to Otos and Ida Stone Bryson.He married Mildred Foster on Jan. 20, 1945, in Columbia, and she survives. He was a supervisor of building services at the University of Missouri-Columbia and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Survivors also include two sons, Bobby Bryson of Victorville, Calif., and Donald Bryson of Centralia; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Otos Bryson and Orbie Bryson; and three sisters, Mary Shelton, Elsie Sims and Ida Weaver.

Wynard Earl Aslin, 82, of Columbia died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Drive, with Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with a prayer service at 7:30.

Mr. Aslin was born Jan. 30, 1920, in Bloomfield to Bonnie Floyd and Mertie Dell Lewis Aslin.

He married Emeline Czapinski on Jan. 9, 1945, and she survives.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Aslin was executive secretary of the Missouri Seed Improvement Association for 42 years before retiring in 1987.

He also was a member of the MU faculty, teaching field-crop studies. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and of the Golden K Kiwanis Club.

Survivors also include two sons, Ray Aslin of Manhattan, Kan., and Larry Aslin of Fayetteville, Ark.; a daughter, Medarda Hoffmann of San Antonio; a brother, David Aslin of Clio, Mich.; a sister, Ilena Aslin of Cape Girardeau; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

David Bruce Buckler, 50, of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at West Village Manor in Columbia.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Red Top Cemetery in Hallsville, with the Rev. Thomas Adams officiating.

Mr. Buckler was born Sept. 1, 1951, in Providence, R.I., to Wilbur and Jessie Watts Buckler.

He married Rena Nelson on Sept. 10, 1988, in Centralia, and she survives. He was a warehouse manager for Heilig-Meyers Furniture.

Survivors also include his parents, of Columbia; a son, Travis Wayne Buckler of Versailles, Mo.; a daughter, Rebecca Rae Buckler of Versailles; a sister, Dianne Reed of Columbia; and a grandson.

Gerald E. Sappington, 57, of Lynnwood, Wash., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Northwest Hospital in Seattle.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Northwest Christian Chapel in Seattle.

Mr. Sappington was born Jan. 30, 1945, to Robert Earl Sappington and Frances E. Snell Sappington of Centralia.

He married Martha Shelton on Dec. 24, 1965, in Union, and she survives.

He was a member of the Northwest Christian Church of Seattle. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ozark Christian College in Springfield. He was a faculty member of Puget Sound Bible College in Seattle at the time of his death.

Other survivors include his mother, Frances Sappington of Columbia; a daughter, Adina Peck of St. Paul, Minn.; a son, Brian Sappington of Lynnwood, Wash.; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Ann Elizabeth Robertson, 86, of Hanover, N.H., formerly of Columbia, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Hanover.

A memorial reception will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Great Room of Reynolds Alumni Center, 704 Conley Ave., on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.

Mrs. Robertson was born March 24, 1916, in Humansville to Lee Roy and Lola Bedford Bloomer.

She married John Modlin on Dec. 24, 1944, in Naples, Italy, and he preceded her in death. She married Howard Robertson on Oct. 1, 1969, in Columbia, and he also preceded her in death.

She graduated from Bois D’Arc High School and Southwest Missouri State College. She completed nursing training at Washington University in St. Louis.

She was a veteran of the Army Nurse Corps, serving with the 21st General Hospital Unit in North Africa, Italy and France from 1942 to 1945.

She moved to Columbia from St. Louis with her first husband in 1946. She returned to Columbia from Denver after the death of her second husband in 1978. In 1997, she moved to New Hampshire.

Survivors include a son, John Modlin of Norwich, Vt.; a daughter, Susan Fernalld of Boulder, Colo.; two stepsons, H. Thomas Robertson of Seattle and John Robertson of San Jose, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Ann Deakyne of Glenview, Ill.; two grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

Victor Anders Gustav Ohman, 78, of Columbia died Nov. 17, 2002, at the Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be private.

Mr. Ohman was born July 21, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Sven Eric and Gerda Johansson Ohman.

He married Marian Morris in 1947.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. After the war, he came to Missouri to attend officer’s training school. He served as a Missouri Highway Patrolman and later became vice president of personnel at Shelter Insurance Cos.

Survivors include his wife, Marian; a son, Joseph E. Ohman; a daughter, Annie O. Ruh; two brothers, Robert and Eric Ohman; three sisters, Edith and Ruth; two grandsons; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaugthter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bea, and a son, John.

Georgia E. Bush, 83, of Columbia died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Mrs. Bush was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Bunceton, to Harry Warrick and Georgia Ann Crump.

She married Arthur Bush Jr., and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Dunbar High School in Bunceton. She was a member of the Richard T. Kelly American Legion No. 238 Ladies Auxiliary and the American War Mothers. She was a deaconess for 30 years at Second Baptist Church in Columbia. She was a member of Progressive Baptist Church in Columbia. She formerly was a member of the Second Baptist Church Gospel Choir. She was a foster grandparent at West Boulevard School in Columbia.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Bush of Phillips Ranch, Calif., and Donald Bush of Rincon, Ga.; four daughters, Arthola Brown and Eunice Crum, both of Columbia, Mary Mitchell of Tucson, Ariz., and Sherry Jefferson of Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers, Charles Warrick of Neptune, N.J., and Lucius Warrick of Waynesville; three sisters, Audrey Warrick of Los Angeles, Doris Kenney of Columbia and Helen Warrick of Boonville; 31 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
