Sharon Gilpin Marshall - 2003-10-06

After graduating from Hickman, I went to M.U. majoring in Elementary Education. After going for 2 years I met my future husband Steve Marshall who graduated from the College Of Agriculture in 1965. He entered the Army Officer Candidate School in Ft. Gordon, Ga. Luckily, when he graduated, he was sent to Germany and we spent 2 years in Frankfurt Germany before coming back to the states. It was great traveling in Europe and seeing all the sights. Our daughter Lisa was born in an army hospital in April, 1968.

After getting out of the service we came back to Columbia where Steve went to Graduate School, and I worked for M.F.A. Insurance-which became Shelter Insurance Co. From Columbia we also lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Bend Indiana where our daughter Christy was born in 1971. Next we lived in Moline Illinois, where our son Scott was born in 1972.

Years earlier, we had decided not to make a career in the Army because we would have to move around too often. Ha! Ha! Moves didn't end there. We also lived in Nebraska, South Dakota, and finally in Springfield Mo. in 1978.  We decided that years of moving because of change of jobs and promotions had to slow down because our kids were now in school. Steve works for Springfield College as their Registrar and I have worked at the Springfield Greene County Library for 17 years. We have undergone many changes within our Library System, and have 8 branches.

I loved being a stay-at-home mom until my kids got older, but now I love working with the public and helping them find their "niche" in reading.  I especially love seeing kids eyes light up when they find their area of interest. Currently I help with the Bookmobile, and the Walking Books Program which is geared to home bound patrons.

Steve and I are proud grandparents of 5- three boys and two girls, all of whom live in Missouri.  We love to travel to see family.  My mom is living in Raymore, Mo at Foxwood Springs. My dad passed away in 1992 in Columbia. Our oldest daughter Lisa passed away in December, 2002. She lived in Columbia and left a husband, and a precious son named Adam.

I won't be able to come to the reunion, but will be thinking of you-my classmates.  Please give a cheer to the Kewpies for me at the football game.  I would love to get an e-mail from you at smarshall008@sbcglobal.net.

April 24, 2010, I was doing the program and music for the "Bonniebrook Historiacal Society Annual Open House", my buddy Sharon Gilpin Marshall and her husband, Steve stopped by for a visit....

When my son was around 16, about 1984 he and a friend went to Springfield with a church youth group and parents in Springfield hosted the kids who attended. When my son got home he said, the lady we stayed with said she went to school with you.

Thanks Sharon, I owe ya!
