Henry Dietz, father of, Gordon Dietz of the Class of 1961, died on Friday, February 19, 1999 at Boone Hospital Center.

Paul Keithley, father of, John, Class of 1961; Bill, Class of 1965; Sue Fink, Class of 1968; and David Class, of 1971; died on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at Boone Hospital Center.

Obituary: Russell Chambers

Russell A. Chambers, 79, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Adams officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

Mr. Chambers was born June 25, 1919, in DeSoto, Kan., to Frank and Allene Chambers. He married Dorothy Hoge on June 26, 1943, in Cuero, Texas, and she survives.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Missouri United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Missouri Music Educators Association and the Missouri Band Masters Association. He owned and operated The Music Shop in Columbia for 48 years.

Survivors also include a son, Russell Chambers Jr. of Springfield; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Aloys Schoennoehl

Aloys G. Schoennoehl, 61, of Boonville, and formerly of Columbia, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Lakeview Health Care in Boonville.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.

Mr. Schoennoehl was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Norfolk, Neb., to Aloys and Erna Kenney Schoennoehl.

He married L. Jean Gerhardt on Dec. 31, 1993, in Boonville, and she survives.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boonville.

Survivors also include his parents of Boonville; a son, Edward Schoennoehl of Columbia; three daughters, LaDora Rogers of Columbia, Regina Twenter of Pilot Grove and Vina Gerhardt of Boonville; a brother, Floyd Schoennoehl of Boonville; two sisters, Patricia Rhodman of Moberly and Betty Wells of Boonville; seven stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Alvin Wehmeyer

Alvin Frederick Wehmeyer, 82, of Rocheport died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Wehmeyer was born March 13, 1916, in Warren County to Carl William Wehmeyer and Ida Sieckmann Wehmeyer.

He married Josephine Dometrorch on Nov. 1, 1942, in Boone County, and she survives.

He retired from employment with the University of Missouri and had also been a farmer.

Survivors also include three sons, Glenn Wehmeyer, Dean Wehmeyer and Dale Wehmeyer, all of Rocheport; two daughters, Freda Ferguson and Juanita Smarr, both of Rocheport; four sisters, Helen Silvey of Columbia and Berndena Alexander, Vernetta Wehmeyer and Ileen Dometrorch, all of Rocheport; and nine grandchildren.

Obituary: Debra Koppenaal

Debra Lynne Koppenaal, 43, of Macon, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999.

Services were held in Macon. Burial was in Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Ga.

Mrs. Koppenaal was born Aug. 14, 1955, in Hannibal to Ken and Nancy Jones.

She married Gary Koppenaal, and he survives in Athens.

She graduated from Hickman High School. She was employed as the assistant manager of the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop in Macon and was a member of the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency.

Survivors include her parents of Columbia; three children, Laura Koppenaal and Andrew Koppenaal, both of Athens, and Victoria Weeks of Macon; and a sister, Karen Roberts of Fayette.

She was preceded in death by a daughter.

Annabelle Taylor, 72, of Columbia died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

She was retired from work as a cashier at Memorial Union at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

W. Paul Keithley, 83, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Keithley was born Sept. 12, 1915, in La Plata to Clarence and Bertha Tucker Keithley.

He married Wanda Mae McCollum on June 15, 1940, in South Gifford, and she survives.

He graduated from La Plata High School and Chillicothe Business College. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a chief warrant officer. He worked for BS&S Steel Co. in Kansas City and later for Shelter Insurance from 1946-78, retiring as secretary/treasurer and secretary to the board of directors.

He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher, chairman of the board and treasurer. He also was a board member of Lenoir home and the Missouri School of Religion.

Survivors include three sons, John Keithley of St. Louis and Bill Keithley and David Keithley, both of Columbia; a daughter, Sue Fink of Columbia; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Henry Lewis Dietz, 82, of Columbia, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Dietz was born May 9, 1916, in Fulton to Edward and Julia Dietz. On Oct. 31, 1936, he married Vinnie Jennings. On April 25, 1964, he married Wanda Jones, and she preceded him in death on April 6, 1998.

Mr. Dietz owned Henry Dietz Signs on Big Bear Boulevard for 33 years and was a member and officer of the World Sign Association. He sold his business in 1978 and retired.

He attended Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Elks Lodge since 1949 and was exalted ruler in 1953-54. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Sunrise Optimist Club.

Survivors include a son, Gordon Dietz of Camarillo, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Parks of San Diego, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Barbara Ross and Judy Douglass, both of Kansas City, and Sandra Turner of Columbia; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joe Dietz; a sister, Francis Davis; and a son, Roger Dietz.

She attended Hickman High School and Stephens College. She retired from 35 years of
employment in the transportation industry including working for Leonard Bros. Transportation Co. in Kansas City. She wrote a book on claims handling service. She was past president of the Women’s Traffic Club and a member of Lee’s Summit United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Baptist Medical Center, both in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit Hospital and John Knox Village.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Rising of Phoenix; two sons, Jim Hamilton of Blue Springs and Jerry Hamilton of Leawood, Kan.; two brothers, Gene Perry of Columbia and John Perry of St. Louis; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Naeger was born Oct. 30, 1950, in St. Louis to Andrew and Marie Naeger.

He married Joyce Baker on Feb. 27, 1971, and she survives.

He received a bachelor’s degree in radio, TV and film and a master’s degree in communication, both from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His employment history includes working for Channel 17 and later as an assistant professor for the MU School of Journalism.

He received the O.O. McIntyre Distinguished Professor Award for excellence in teaching in 1998. He was an Army veteran, serving at West Point Military Academy, and was with the Missouri Army National Guard from 1978 to the present, attaining the rank of chief warrant officer.

Survivors also include his mother of St. Marys; two sons, Jason Naeger and Aaron Naeger, both of Columbia; a daughter, Leanne Naeger of Columbia and two brothers, Richard Naeger and Kenneth Naeger, both of St. Marys.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Nolte, James Nolte and Richard Nolte, all of Columbia; two daughters, Marceil Flatt of Centralia and Angela Brown of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Allen of Garden City, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She later was employed as an occupational therapist in the children’s ward at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center, becoming head of the occupational therapy department. She retired in 1978. She was a member of Missouri United Methodist
Church.

Survivors include a son, Michael Perry of New York.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Charles E. Carnahan, 57, of Columbia died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Missouri United Methodist Church with Dr. Rhymes Moncure Jr. and the Rev. Ann VanDervoort officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at the church. Arrangements made under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Dr. Carnahan was born July 21, 1941, in Poplar Bluff to Charles and Lorene Schafer Carnahan.

He married Mary Worn on Dec. 20, 1984, in Boonville, and she survives.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine in 1966, had a post-graduate training internship in pediatrics at MU and had his residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He served as a pediatrician in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church and Missouri State Medical Society. He was published in "Best Doctors in America" in 1996-97 and
was a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. He held a private practice in Columbia from 1971-99. He was chief of pediatrics at Boone Hospital Center in 1972-73 and 1992-93, first director of pediatrics at Columbia Regional Hospital, was chief medical officer and chairman of Boone Clinic from 1986-99, member of executive board and treasurer of Central Missouri Primary Care 1995-99, on the board of directors of Advent
Enterprises from 1993-97 and chairman of the board of Therapy for Kids 1996-98.

Other survivors include his mother of Columbia; a son, Chris Carnahan of St. Louis; two stepsons, John Scalise of Columbia and David Scalise of Kenosha, Wis.; a daughter, Libby Carnahan Lawson of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.

Robert Warren Glass, 77, of Columbia died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Sturgeon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clarence Forsberg officiating. Burial with military services will be held in Mount Horeb Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Parker Funeral Service.

Mr. Glass was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Wyaconda to Clarence and Ethel Borngrouer Glass.

He married Kathleen Seymour on Dec. 15, 1941, in Boonville, and she survives.

Mr. Glass owned and operated Superior Self Service Laundry from 1941-67. He retired from employment as a brick mason in 1977.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Kaye Sapp of Columbia; a brother, Charles Glass of Springfield; two sisters, Rose McClure of Columbia and Marge Tipps of Spring, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Charles C. Cornett, 84, of Columbia died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at home.

Mr. Cornett was born Oct. 26, 1914, in Pleasanton, Iowa, to Charlie and Nettie McKinney Cornett.

He married Reva Hagan on Sept. 3, 1935, in Princeton, and she survives.

He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church, Grand Order of Pachyderms, Quarterback Club and Country Club of Missouri. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and former member of Columbia Health Commission and Governor’s Committee on Aging. He was employed with Farmer’s Home Administration as a
state executive officer for 35 years. He later worked for First Bank of Commerce.

Survivors also include a son, C. Bruce Cornett of Columbia; a daughter, Ann Anderson of Columbia; a brother, James Rush Cornett of Pleasanton; seven granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Waldo F. Mottaz, 85, of Columbia died Friday, April 23, 1999, in Columbia.

Mr. Mottaz was born April 1, 1914, in Irondale to Clarence and Stella Christopher Mottaz. He married EmaletaMoser on Nov. 3, 1934, in Waterloo, Ill., and she survives.

He owned Mottaz Motors Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership in Auxvasse and Columbia from 1946-58, and remained in the automobile business until 1966. He was a past president and chairman of the board of the State Bank of Hallsville. He was also chairman of the board of the Bank of Montgomery County.

He was a past president of the Missouri Bankers Association and a charter member and past president of Little Dixie Kiwanis. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and a longtime member and an elder emeritus of First Christian Church.

Survivors also include two sons, Fred Mottaz of Hallsville and Clayton Mottaz of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Emily Barbush of Louisville, Ky.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Harry Earl Burge, 82, of Columbia died Monday, May 17, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Burge was born July 2, 1916, in Centralia to Harry Earl and Martha Belva Masterson Burge. He married Margaret Coffman on April 9, 1944, in Columbia, and she survives. He had been employed as a flight instructor during World War II, based at the old municipal airport, and later became head of the aviation program at Stephens College. He retired in 1980 from being college comptroller and vice president for business affairs. He
was a member of First Baptist Church and was active with the United Way, Airport Advisory Board and board of directors of Blue Cross-Blue Shield.

Survivors also include two daughters, Barbara Chancellor and Beverly Spencer, both of Columbia; three granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

She was a member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She graduated from business college in Chillicothe, then worked as a secretary at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She retired from Boone County National Bank after working for 35 years.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Athens Rebecca Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Charles Dysart of Columbia; two daughters, Betty Ann Powell of St. Joseph and Dora Kling of Washburn, Wis.; a sister, Emma Jean Daniel of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gordon was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Piggott, Ark., to Oscar and Nola Davis Gordon.

He married Helen Frances Wehmeyer on Oct. 31, 1940, in Jefferson City, and she preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri and a member of the MU football team that played in the 1940 Orange Bowl. He was founder and board member of Century State Bank. He was a member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church, a member of Jefferson Club of the University of Missouri and the Missouri Athletic Scholarship Association. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1938-42.

Survivors include, two sons, John Gordon of Columbia and Thomas Gordon of Greensboro, Ga.; a half-brother, Pharis Gordon of Dallas; one sister, Mammie Glover of Piggott, Ark.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Adron Edward Perry, 73, of Columbia, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at his home.

Mr. Perry was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Melvin Ill.

He married Dorothy Eileen Woods on Aug. 1, 1948, in Bloomington, Ill., and she survives.

He was a charter member of Broadway Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army infantry during WWII and worked for Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and past president of the Columbia Safety Council. He served on the Boy Scouts executive committee. He had been employed by State Farm Insurance for 42 years before
his retirement.

Survivors also include three sons, Adron Edward Perry II, Brandon Lee Perry and Rodney Eugene Perry, all of Columbia; a daughter, Pamela Eileen Kramme of St. Clair; and 13 grandchildren.

Mr. McDannold was born June 30, 1941, in Middletown to Charles McDannold and Roberta Morris McDannold.

He married Carol Beatty in Mexico, Mo., on July 9, 1960, and she survives.

He was a member of Community United Methodist Church and worked for Prudential Insurance for 22 years. He was later self-employed as a broker and farmer.

Mr. McDannold graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1963, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and played baseball from 1961-63. He received his Charter Life Underwriter Designation in 1968 and served as president of the Columbia Association of Life Underwriters in 1970-71.

Mr. McDannold was active in coaching Daniel Boone Little League and Russell Elementary School basketball and football teams. He coached the American Legion Post 202 baseball team from 1980-82.

Other survivors include his mother, of Mexico, Mo.; two sons, Rick McDannold of Columbia and Greg McDannold of Rocheport; a brother, Charles McDannold of New Hartford; a sister, Linda Collins of Arnold; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Jesse McDannold.

Dr. Edward C. Lambert, 89, of Columbia, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Lambert was born Jan. 29, 1910, in What Cheer, Iowa, to Edward Gray and Elsie May King Lambert.

He married Ella Cole on May 30, 1936, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and she survives.

He was a member of the Missouri United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He served aboard the USS Competent in the South Pacific, and on the staff of Admiral Glascock as Top Communications Officer in Europe. Mr. Lambert served on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Columbia as a professor of journalism and also as assistant to the president in charge of television. He founded the broadcast news sequence at the Missouri School of Journalism, leading him to create KOMU-TV in 1953. As general manager and founder, he developed the idea of using the station to train his students in the broadcast sequence, putting the job of reporting the news and producing the broadcasts in their hands. For more than 20 years, he served as the moderator for Missouri Forum on KOMU and on radio stations throughout the state. He also served as news director for KFRU radio.

Survivors also include two daughters, Pamela Lambert of Columbia and Barbara Reichel of Dayton Beach Shores, Fla., and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

After WWII, he worked with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to help rebuild the dairy herds of Europe. He was also active in Everyday People.

Mr. Breedlove served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Sturgeon.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 280, past monarch and secretary of Aleppo Grotto, for which he served as state president of the Central States Aleppo Grotto.

Mr. Breedlove was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 59 AF&AM in Centralia and a 50-year member and past president of UA Plumbers’ and Pipefitters’ Local Union No. 317.

He had been an employee with J. Louis Crum Corp. for more than 40 years.

Survivors also include a daughter, Anna Bloomfield of Columbia; three brothers, Nim Breedlove of Columbia, Morrison Breedlove of Hallsville and Eldon Breedlove of Madison; three sisters, Virginia Clark of Columbia, Irene Sexton of Centralia and Glorena Davidson of Independence; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Hilda M. Hampton, 67, of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Tipton Manor in Tipton.

Mrs. Hampton was born Oct. 20, 1931, in Lee’s Summit to Charles Mengel and Ella Haas. She married Roy Hampton in 1949 in Las Vegas, and he survives.

Mrs. Hampton was a homemaker.

Obituary: Louise Koch

Louise Koch, 90, of Belen, N. M., formerly of Columbia, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 15, at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Belen. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Mrs. Koch was born Feb. 2, 1909, in East Prairie to Claude Hale and Katherine Shuppert Hale.

She married George Koch Jr., and he preceded her in death.

She attended McKendree College in Illinois and received a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess and a state employment counselor. In 1951, she was voted "Mother of the Year" in Columbia.

Survivors include two sons, George Koch III of Belen and David Koch of Long Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Karlene Voepel of Durango, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jerry Whitney Thomas, 77, of Denver, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Colorado.

Mr. Thomas was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Enid, Okla., to Harold Daye and Sue Lillian Thomas.

He married Geraldine Irene Hartley in 1946, and she survives.

He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and of the University of Colorado-Boulder. He served in the First Marine Division Fleet Marine Force during World War II. He was manager of the tire division for MFA Oil Co. in Columbia from 1964-74. He was founder and chairman of Foree Tire Distributors in Denver.

Survivors also include three sons, Whitney Thomas of Littleton, Colo., Cliff Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Arnold Thomas of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Marilyn of Greeley, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Schirmer served with the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He was a photo engraver for the Graphic Engraving Service before retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a life member of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 280, a life member of the Military Order of the Cootie and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 202 and the International Order of Odd Fellows. He worked as an automotive technician and owned and operated his own business for 58 years.

Survivors also include two sons, Arlen Lee Creason of Oklahoma City and John Paul Creason of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Sandra Bench of Lake Ozark and Mary Anne Crane of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Fifth Street Christian Church, the church’s adult choir and Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member and past worthy patron of the Amos Johnson chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 30.

Jeanette Lorraine Jefferson, 56, of Columbia died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Jefferson was born Jan. 9, 1943, in Charleston to Alfred Harris and Josie Keyes. On Dec. 29, 1969, she married John Jefferson, and he survives.

She graduated from Charleston High School and then from Columbia College as a registered nurse. She worked for University Hospitals and Clinics for 29 years. She was a member of St. Paul AME Church.

She was a former chairwoman of the Columbia Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and a former member of the state Board of Health, the Stroke Survivors Club, the Frederick Douglass Coalition and the Frederick Douglass Neighborhood Association. She was a volunteer for the Columbia/Boone County Department of Health and for University Hospitals and Clinics. She was also a member of the Douglass Area Poetry Club and the Martin Luther King Association.

Mrs. Jefferson earned several awards over the years, including a Dr. Martin Luther King Service Award and volunteer service awards from the state of Missouri, the city of Columbia and the Columbia Housing Authority. She also earned Poet Society Awards from the Library of Congress in 1996, 1997 and 1998, an Imani Award from the city of Columbia in 1995 and a Chancellor’s Staff Recognition Award at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Surviving along with her husband and son are two daughters, Cynthia Jefferson of Columbia and Lynette Jefferson of Tulsa, Okla.; three sisters, Mildred Strong and Mary Petterson, both of Chicago, and Carolyn Betts of Indianapolis; two brothers, Alfred Harris of Memphis and Jacob Harris of Chicago; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Wesley Stanley Platner, 83, of Columbia died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Boone Retirement Center.

Mr. Platner was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Newark, N.J., to John and Mary Zinkowicz Platner.

He married Mary McConathy on Nov. 28, 1942, and she preceded him in death.

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Missouri in 1942 to work for the U.S. government’s Water Pollution Survey. He received a doctorate degree in physiology in 1948 from the University of Missouri-Columbia and later joined the faculty in the Physiology Department. He retired in 1980 with emeritus status.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Ann Platner of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Mr. Belcher was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Okeene, Okla., to John Gordon and Maude Davidson Belcher. On March 20, 1938, he married Merle Key in Portland, Ore., and she survives.

Mr. Belcher moved to Columbia in 1967 to become assistant to University of Missouri system president John Weaker. In that role he led the development of the UM system’s labor relations program for 11 years. After retiring, he did labor arbitration for companies and unions throughout the United States. He was a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators, professional organizations and the First Presbyterian Church.

Other survivors include a son, Gordon Belcher of Columbia; two daughters, Jan Sudholt of Springfield and Sharen Wixom of Savannah, Ga.; a brother, John Belcher of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Mark Belcher.

He was an engineer for the Department of Agriculture for 36 years. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Sunrise Optimist Club, American Legion, Forty and Eight and president of the Columbia Safety Council.

Survivors also include two daughters, Debbie Foppe of St. Louis and Pattie Bramon of Centralia; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Obiturary: James Stitt

James H. Stitt, 59, of Columbia died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Susan Cox-Johnson officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Dr. Stitt was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Sellersville, Pa., to James Wilson and Dorothy Gladys Jewett Stitt. In 1964, he married Betty Marlene MaGee, and she survives.

Dr. Stitt lived his early life in eastern Pennsylvania, graduating from Easton High School in 1957. He received a bachelor’s degree at Rice University in 1961 and master’s and doctoral degrees in 1964 and 1968, respectively, at the University of Texas-Austin.

He became an assistant professor in the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Geology in 1968 and rose to the rank of full professor in 1977. He was director of graduate studies from 1970 to 1977, chairman of the geology department from 1977 to 1980 and graduate adviser again from 1982 to the present. He taught classes in paleontology, dinosaurs and introductory geology.

Dr. Stitt published numerous papers with the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the Journal of Paleontology and became an internationally known expert on the identification and paleoecology of Trilobites from the Upper Cambrian and Lower Ordovician Periods.

He was a member of the Paleontological Society and the Geological Society of America. He was a board member of the Institute for Cambrian Studies.

Other survivors include two daughters, Tanya Stitt Heath of Columbia and Merrilee Stitt Barta of Columbia; and a brother, Thomas Stitt of Easton, Pa.

Mary Margaret Miller, 71, of Columbia died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Capital Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City.

Mrs. Miller was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Boone County to Theodore and Margaret Gaithwright Russell. She graduated from Douglass High School. She married David Noble in 1950, and he preceded her in death. She later married Herman Miller, and he survives.

In 1967, Mrs. Miller worked for the Columbia Housing Authority as its first black project director; she later served a year as interim executive director. She also served as the Boone County director of the Human Development Corporation, the job from which she retired.

She was a founding member of the "Sho Me" Credit Union, Planned Parenthood of Central Missouri, the Central Missouri Food Bank and The Wardrobe.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Noble Cavitte of Jefferson City and Jaynae Miller of Los Angeles, Calif., and one grandchild.

He graduated with a doctor in law degree from the University of Havana. He moved to the United States in 1960 to teach Spanish and French classes at Stephens College. He also assisted A.P. Green and A.B. Chance with translations for Latin American business transactions. He also worked with the Peace Corps in Miami, teaching Spanish to Peace Corps volunteers. Following his retirement from Stephens College in 1982, he worked with his family in real estate developments managed by Forum Development Group.

Survivors also include one daughter, Maria Mendenhall of Columbia; one son, Jose Lindner of Columbia; and five grandchildren.

Obituary: Donald Davison

Donald Auston Davison, 65, of Columbia, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the family home. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Nilson Funeral Home.

Mr. Davison was born July 10, 1934, in Columbia to Arnold "Silver" Davison and Mary Willard Davison.

He married Blanche Peck in 1961 in Rocheport, and she survives.

He was a veteran of the Navy. He had been employed as a chef at The Heidelberg and at Everetts.

Survivors also include one son, Terry Davison of Columbia; one daughter, Tami Davison of Columbia; two brothers, Edward Davison of Columbia and Charles Willard of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Pattsy Griffin of Columbia; and a grandson.

Mary Evelyn Cross, 66, of Columbia died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at University of Missouri Science Center.

Mrs. Cross was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Columbia to Jesse and Louella Williams Edwards.

She married George Robert Cross on Aug. 3, 1962, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Douglass High School and had been employed at the University of Missouri Science Center. She was a member of Christ Apostolic Temple.

Survivors include one daughter, Tawanda Edwards of Jefferson City; six sons, James Edwards of Fort Lee, Va., George Edwards, Michael Edwards, William Edwards, Robert Edwards and Tracy Edwards, all of Columbia; five sisters, Patsy Nelson and Edith Prince, both of Columbia, Dorothy Rowles of Kansas City, Wanda Incles of Blue Springs and Vicky Battles of Tulsa, Okla.; three brothers, Roy Hicks of Columbia, James Edwards of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Thomas Edwards of Gardenia, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Obituary: Hubert Blakemore

Hubert Odell Blakemore, 89, of Columbia died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Olivet Christian Church with the Rev. Dennis Swearngin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at Memorial Funeral Home with an Odd Fellows service at 8 p.m.

Mr. Blakemore was born May 8, 1910, in Harrisburg to Frank and Stella Wood Blakemore. He married Hazel Board on Aug. 6, 1938, in Butler, and she preceded him in death.

He had been the owner of Minute Inn. He was employed as manager of Cook Paint Store for more than 30 years. He sold real estate for 14 years. He farmed his entire life, full time for 13 years. He was a member, past deacon, past board member and honorary elder of Olivet Christian Church. He was also a member of Odd Fellows and president of Sunrise Optimist Club.

Survivors include a son, Marvin Blakemore of Columbia; a daughter, Sybl Slaughter of Lebanon; a sister, Hazel Moreau of Columbia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a sister.

Albert Archie Crump, 81, of Columbia died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Memorial Funeral Home with Bob Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Crump was born June 28, 1918, in Hartsburg to Turner Levi and Malinda Ann Meyer Crump.

He married Ruby Bledsoe on July 25, 1946, in Pittsburg, Kan., and she preceded him in death.

Mr. Crump was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was purchasing manager at MFA Farm Supply for 34 years. He was a member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 156 and of York Rite Chapter No. 34, Council No. 32 and Commandery No. 29. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, White Shrine No. 7 and the Boone Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was a dad adviser for the Rainbow Girls.

Survivors include a son, Albert Crump Jr. of Rolla; a daughter, Brenda Ford of Columbia; a brother, Florenze Crump of Elsberry; a sister, Dorothy Bode of Fulton; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Marie Baumgartner Craig, 83, of Columbia, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at University Hospitals and Clinics.

Mrs. Craig was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Boone County to Robert Isom and Eunice Sapp Baumgartner.

She married Cleitus Francis Craig on April 28, 1940, in Ashland and he preceded her in death.

She had been employed as a cook for New Haven School for twenty years before her retirement in 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Dale Craig and Jerry Ray Craig, both of Columbia; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Obituary: Martha Dudley

Martha Elizabeth Dudley, 84, of Columbia died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Columbia Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Dudley was born March 18, 1915, in Hickory, N.C., to Jacob Levi and Mary Viola Loman Kiser.

She married Robert Dudley in 1949, and he preceded her in death.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Women’s College at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1936 and her master’s degree from Columbia College in 1945.

A career educator, she taught in North Carolina public schools and at Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. She was director of the Childcare Center in Nursery School Education at Stephens College from 1943-45, then director of public kindergartens in Hilo, Hawaii, from 1946 through 1947.

Mrs. Dudley taught nursery school in Topeka, Kan., and elementary school in Tulsa, Okla., before returning in 1961 to Stephens College, where she taught kindergarten and was a professor in the Child Study Department. She retired in 1980.

Mrs. Dudley established one of the country’s first Head Start programs in 1966 in Columbia. After her retirement, she taught English at Fukuoka Women’s Junior College in Fukuoka, Japan, from 1980 to 1982.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Columbia.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Martha Dudley of Columbia; a son, Robert Dudley of Columbia; a brother, John Jacob Kiser of Hickory, N.C.; and two sisters, Mary Kiser of Hickory and Helen Kiser-Smith of Charlotte, N.C.

Memorials are suggested to the Columbia Head Start program, Ripley Children’s Center of Columbia, the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the children’s charity of the donor’s choice.

Survivors include two sons, Dick Hitt of Columbia and James Hitt of Britton; a daughter, Barbara Miller of Denver; a sister, Olive Hoffner of Troy; a brother, Joe Shultz of Brookfield; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ralph Shelton Reddick Sr., 63, of Columbia died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Reddick was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Cantwell to Orel and Grace Hawthorne Reddick.

He married Dolores Hausherr on Nov. 1, 1958, in Bonne Terre, and she survives.

He served in the Army from 1954-57.

He was employed for 36 years with Missouri Job Service. He served on the Strawn School Board and helped develop the nursing facility at the former Strawn School. He volunteered at Ridgeway School and with the Boy Scouts and Little League. He was past president of the Association of Retired Missouri State Employees. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Sturgeon.

Survivors also include his mother of Bonne Terre; four sons, Ralph Reddick Jr., Scott Reddick, Ryan Reddick and Ross Reddick, all of Columbia; four brothers, Jesse Reddick of Jackson, Carl Reddick of Scott City and James Reddick and Roy Reddick, both of Columbia; three sisters, Bernice Zobrisky of Columbia and Ethel Reddick and Grace Pettus, both of Bonne Terre; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Sue Fay Ghio, 79, of Columbia died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Ghio was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Sidell, Ill., to William and Sarah Callahan Wright. She married Robert Ghio on Dec. 6, 1944, in New York, and he survives.

She was a member of the Quota Club for several years and a founding member of the Columbia Art League. She and her husband owned and operated the Ghio Photography Studio for 30 years and also Ghio’s Valley Store for about 20 years.

Survivors also include a daughter, Missy McReynolds of Columbia; a son, Robert Ghio of Hallsville; a sister, Letha McKee of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland with a degree in industrial design. He had been employed as an industrial engineer by Sunbeam Corp. and later by McGraw Edison in Chicago. He moved to Columbia in 1975 and was a member of the Forum Boulevard Christian Church. He was also a member of the Kwahadi Indian Boy Scout Troop and the Booneslick Chordbusters.

Survivors also include his mother, Ruby Irelan of Oklahoma City; two sons, Shaun Irelan of Red Oak, Iowa, and Todd Irelan of Columbia; a brother, Smiley Irelan of Shawnee, Okla.; and a sister, Alice Whittington of Oklahoma City.

Survivors also include a brother, W.E. Morton of Dallas; one son, Bud Morton of Paris, Tenn.; two daughters, Margie Kramer and Sandy Finch, both of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Harper of Sherwood, Ark.; a son, Irvin Sevier of Eldon; three sisters, Laverne Benty and Thelma Randolph, both of Lake Ozark, and Helen Singleton of Columbia; a brother, Elgin Jacobs of Mexico; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Thomas Baskett

Thomas Sebree Baskett, 83, of Columbia died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his home.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Ashland Cemetery in Howard County with the Rev. Rhymes Moncure Jr. officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Baskett was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Liberty to William Denny and Maybelle Grigsby Baskett.

He married Marjorie Kenison on Feb. 14, 1947, in Ames, Iowa, and she survives.

He graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayette and earned advanced degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church.

He taught at Iowa State and the University of Connecticut before coming to Columbia in 1948 as a federal biologist and University of Missouri faculty member. He led the Missouri Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit for 32 years and from 1968 to 1973 was chief of wildlife research for the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in Washington, D.C. He retired from the Missouri unit in 1985 and attained MU emeritus status in 1987.

He served as editor of The Journal of Wildlife Management in the 1960s and served as president of The Wildlife Society in 1971. He was awarded The Wildlife Society’s Aldo Leopold Memorial Award, the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Master Conservationist Award and the E. Sydney Stephens Professional Wildlife Award from The Wildlife Society’s Missouri Chapter. In 1988, MU named a wildlife research area near Ashland for him.

Other survivors include two sons, Thomas Baskett Jr. of DeLand, Fla., and Richard Kenison Baskett of Columbia; a daughter, Jann Diane Baskett of Austin, Texas; a sister, Frances Lodge Heistercamp of Nokomis, Fla.; his stepmother, Helen Baskett of Fayette; and two grandchildren.

She was born on Oct. 8, 1950, in Mexico, Mo., to Robert H. and Virginia Skamenca Shulse. She married Charles DeVier on Sept. 23, 1995, and he survives. She graduated from Mexico High School and moved to Kansas City and then Seattle, where she lived for 15 years and worked as a technical writer for the Water Quality Authority before moving to Columbia. She was a member of Olivet Christian Church.

Obituary: Emaleta Mottaz

Emaleta Moser Mottaz, 87, of Columbia died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at South Hampton Place.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, at First Christian Church with the Rev. John Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mottaz was born May 5, 1912, in Martinsburg to Samuel and Emma Ida Klarenbach Moser.

She married Waldo Mottaz on Nov. 3, 1934, in Waterloo, Ill., and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mottaz was a member and deaconess emeritus of First Christian Church. She was a past president and 40-year member of King’s Daughters. She also was a member of Coffman-Watson Circle of Christian Women’s Fellowship, Republican Women and Columbia Garden Club. She served as an election judge for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Mottaz was also a 30-year member of the board of The State Bank of Hallsville and was active with her husband in the Missouri Bankers Association.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Mottaz of Hallsville and Clayton Mottaz of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Emily Barbush of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Samuel Moser Jr. of Auxvasse; a sister, Coralee Riley of Lake St. Louis; and nine grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Obituary: Lola Hawkins

Lola Hawkins, 98, of Boston, Mass., and formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Watertown, Mass.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Rhymes Moncure officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Hawkins was born Oct. 7, 1901, in Columbia to Emmett Hawkins and Laura Dennis Hawkins.

She was a Spanish and French teacher at Hickman High School from 1962 to 1973. She had earlier taught as an undergraduate at the University of Missouri, then earned masters degrees in home economics and romance languages.

She was a lifelong member of the Missouri United Methodist Church and was active in many other organizations, including Altrusa, the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the American Association of University Women. She volunteered for many years for the American Red Cross, particularly its blood donor program.

Mrs. Hawkins often gave presentations to local organizations about her travels throughout the world and her collections of international arts and crafts. In 1988, she moved to New York City to live with her brother-in-law, John Patterson. She later moved to Boston.

Survivors include a nephew, Robert Patterson of Lexington, Mass.

She was preceded in death by a sister.

Obituary: Roy Detloff

Roy W. Detloff, 80, of Columbia died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Detloff was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Bloomington, Ill., to Howard and Freda Detloff.

He married Arline Wiekert on May 24, 1941, in Georgia, and she preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-45. He had been employed by State Farm Insurance until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a son, Duane Detloff of Columbia, and a brother, William Detloff of Bloomington, Ill.

He was also preceded in death by a sister.

She married George LaRock on Nov. 4, 1938, in Independence, and he preceded her in death.

She retired as a claims adjuster for MFA/Shelter Insurance Co. She was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Hendrickson of Hutchinson, Kan., and Judy LaRock-Mosley of The Woodlands, Texas; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.

Obituary: Michael Bruner

Michael Kimbrough Bruner, 26, of Austin, Texas, died Dec. 11, 1999, in Austin.

Mr. Bruner was born June 15, 1973, to Don and Jane Osiek Bruner.

He served in the U.S. Navy where he earned the Navy achievement medal. He was attending college in Austin and was a mentor and children’s tennis coach.

Survivors include his father, Don Bruner of Grants Pass, Ore., formerly of Columbia; his mother, Jane Ahern of Denver; and two brothers, John Bruner of Denver and Stephen Bruner of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Stephen Bernard Adams, 52, of Kansas City died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Kansas City.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Don Antweiler officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Adams was born Jan. 17, 1947, in Princeton, Ill., to Bernard Francis and Helen Patricia Murray Adams.

He was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Force in England and worked as an analyst programmer for DST Systems, Inc., of Kansas City.

Survivors include his mother of Columbia; his fiancee, Bobbie Miner of Kansas City; a brother, Randy Adams of Columbia; and a sister, Dorothy Burks of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his father.
