Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Wednesday, July 9, 2003 - Albuquerque Journal

By Paul Logan, Journal Staff Writer

Lee Francis, a nationally known Laguna Pueblo author, was a "central force" in the encouragement of young Native American writers, a friend said Tuesday.

Francis, winner of the 2003 Excellence in Literary Arts Bravos Award, died Monday of cancer at his Albuquerque home. He was 58.

Francis was a University of New Mexico associate professor and founder/national director of Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers.

Francis was a nonjudgmental person who was generous with his advice and his spirit, said Joseph Bruchac, an Abenaki Indian writer from Greenfield Center, N.Y.

"I would say in the last 10 years in particular, Lee has been a very central force in the encouragement and the advancement of young native writers," Bruchac said.

"In many ways, Lee was an example of what a teacher should be. He taught what he loved, and he taught it in such a way that it inspired those people who were lucky enough to experience his tutelage."

His son, Lee Francis IV of Albuquerque, said his father loved Wordcraft Circle, which he founded in 1992. "It was family."

His Wordcraft "family" has about 300 members from around the world, including 135 indigenous nations and tribes.

"I think that's why he always focused on family," his son said. "He came from a big, strong family core himself ... It's about folks getting together and sharing ideas, sharing support and love and all of the wonderful things that comes from being part of a family."

Elias Lee Francis was born in Albuquerque to a Laguna-Scotch mother and Lebanese father. Francis was a barrel-chested 5-foot-10 and about 240 pounds with black, curly hair.

"He was thoughtful and always inquisitive about human beings in general," his son said.

He said the Arts Alliance's award in April was "such an incredible honor" for his father, especially in his home state.

During the presentation at the Marriott Hotel, there was a video about Francis. The filming was done before he began losing large amounts of hair because of chemotherapy. So Francis shaved his head.

His son said his father told the audience: "Well, if you couldn't tell already, I have a new hairstyle."

"He was funny and he just gave off an energy that people wanted be around," his son said.

Francis taught at UNM since 1997. His field was Native American Studies, where he was an expert in literature, both oral and contemporary.

He wrote "Native Time: A Historical Time Line of Native America" in 1996. He co-authored "Reclaiming The Vision — Past, Present and Future: Native Voices for the Eighth Generation" in 1996.

His first book of poetry, "On the Good Red Interstate: Truckstop Tellings and Other Poems," was published in 2002.

Francis was compared to a number of great Indian writers in a Journal feature announcing his award. In the story, Francis expressed elation about the blossoming of Native American writing:

"What's especially exciting is that young students in high school, of their own accord, are talking about the importance of writing and how it dramatically impacts, particularly Native American societies and cultures.

"It's important for the young to become articulate and to write their stories. For me, it's very inspiring..."

Bruchac said Francis inspired others, and yet always gave the people credit without indicating what he had done.
"There are a lot of talented people in the world, but not a lot of people in the world who encourage the talent of others," Bruchac said of Francis.

He called Francis' loss incalculable, but he hoped someone would fill the vacuum.

"On the other hand, someone like Lee never really leaves us," Bruchac said. "I know that he'll always be with me and my family."

Other survivors include Mary, his wife of 31 years.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the UNM Alumni Chapel on campus, a short distance west of the duck pond.

Memorial donations may be made to Wordcraft Circle, 4905 El Aguila Place NW, Albuquerque, N.M. 87120.

Former MU business dean dies at 85

Pinkney C. Walker, a former University of Missouri-Columbia economics professor and dean who also served in a federal appointment, died Friday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 85.

Walker came to MU in 1940 as an instructor of finance. He served as economics department chair from 1960 to 1962 and dean of the College of Business & Public Administration from 1964 through 1971.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon appointed Walker to serve on the Federal Power Commission, the forerunner of what is now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

"Pinkney and a few others were in on the ground floor of really, totally transforming the way the natural gas industry was regulated," said MU Chancellor Richard Wallace. "They took the step of totally deregulating in that area."

After his term expired in 1973, Pinkney returned to MU to teach. He took emeritus status in 1975.

Walker was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Graham, Texas. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas. He went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration and a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Walker took a leave from MU from 1943 to 1946 to serve as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theaters and reached the rank of lieutenant.

In 1967, Walker summoned Wallace - who was then being promoted from assistant to associate economics professor - into his office. Walker asked Wallace whether he’d like to be economics chairman.

"I said, ‘You mean acting?’ " Wallace recalled this morning. "He said no. ‘If I’m going to ask you to be chair you’re going to be chair.’ And I’ve been in administration ever since."

Walker influenced others at MU, including Ken Lay, one of Walker’s students who was the CEO of Enron Corp. at the time of its collapse.

Pinkney is survived by his wife, Sheila Pinkney, of Fort Myers, and a daughter, Anne Walker Siefert of Overland Park, Kan. His death was preceded by his wife Helen and two sons, Clay and John.
