Anna Mae Hern, 70, of Columbia died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at University Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at St. Luke United Methodist Church, 204 E. Ash St., with the Rev. Raymond Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Warren Funeral Chapel, 12 E. Ash St.

Miss Hern was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Columbia to William Alfred Hern and Willa M. Wills Hern.

Miss Hern was a graduate of Douglass High School in Columbia, where she participated in basketball. Miss Hern was employed in the shipping and receiving department of Dillard Co. in Columbia, Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital and the U.S. Post Office in Denver, Colo.

Survivors include a son, David Hern of Columbia; and a brother, Charles Hern of Boonville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, August Hern Sr. and John "Pete" Hern.

Lorene Virginia Unger, 66, of Columbia, died Jan. 3, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Drive, Columbia, with Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at the church, followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery, Glasgow.

Mrs. Unger was born Jan. 12, 1936, in Forest Green to Julius and Mary Monnig. On June 15, 1954, she married James Unger in Glasgow, and he survives.

Mrs. Unger belonged to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. She painted as a hobby.

Other survivors include her mother, Mary Johnson of Glasgow; two sons, Russ Unger of Columbia and Curt Unger of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Mona Wieberg of Fayette; five brothers, Norbert Monnig, George Monnig and David Monnig, all of Glasgow, Julius Monnig of Fayette and Aaron Monnig of Salisbury; and six sisters, Alice Browning of Boonville, Anna Korte of Kansas City and Mary Jo Reich, Kathy Fuemmeler, Rosetta Fuemmeler and Evelyn Aholt, all of Glasgow; and seven grandchildren.

Her father preceded her in death.

Richard Leon Perrin, 69, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Tom Adams officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Moberly.

Mr. Perrin was born July 18, 1933, in Washington County, Iowa, to Harley and Ida Perrin. In 1954, he married Kathryn Vulysteke in Iowa, and she preceded him in death. On June 8, 1972, he married Joyce Riedel in Paris, Mo., and she survives.

Mr. Perrin was a member of American Legion Post No. 1000. He served with the Marines during the Korean War.

Other survivors include three sons, Steven Perrin, Bart Perrin and Troy Dailey, all of Columbia; four daughters, Tamara Price of Columbia and Diane Pilkington, Linda Brooks and Lisa Chitwood, all of Moberly; four sisters, Lillian Furgason of Oxford, Iowa, Bea Yoder of St. Clair, Hilda Schwab of Brownwood, Texas, and Peggy Foraker of Morrison, Colo.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Laurie Beth Perrin, and a brother, Calvin Perrin.

Stella B. Daye, 62, of St. Louis, formerly of Columbia, died Jan. 1, 2003, in St. Louis.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Warren Funeral Chapel, 12 E. Ash St., with the Rev. James Dudley officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the funeral home.

Ms. Daye was born July 12, 1940, in Columbia to Louis Kinney and Leona Whitley Kinney.

She attended Douglass High School. She was a member of the Tenants Association of the Columbia Housing Authority. She was a founding member of Park Street Daycare. She worked in the Fifth Street Christian Church Food Pantry. She was a member of Fifth Street Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Garry Daye of Springfield and Troy Daye of St. Louis; two daughters, Diana Miller of Columbia and Evelyn Daye of St. Louis; three sisters Ann Wright and Carol Jones, both of Columbia, and Dorothy Palmer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Marvin Kinney of Columbia; several grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Thomas Howard Shirley, 64, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, in Columbia.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Warren Funeral Chapel, 12 E. Ash St., with the Rev. Horace Hopkins Jr. officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Shirley was born Nov. 26, 1938, in New Franklin to Albert and Cora Ray Shirley.

He attended Sumner High School in Boonville and had worked at Schnucks Supermarket in Columbia. He was a member of the Food Employees Union Local No. 655, AFL-CIO.

Survivors include a daughter, Vida Crum of Columbia; two sons, Ricky Jackman and Reno Jackman, both of Columbia; two stepsisters, Sandra Robinson of Boonville and Barbara Patrick of Jefferson City; and two brothers, Albert Shirley Jr. of Los Angeles and Lilburn Shirley of Boonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lily Mae Ferrell, 68, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at her home.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St., with Clay Spencer officiating, and at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho with the Rev. Mick Evans officiating. Burial will be in Hazel Green Cemetery in Neosho.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Parker Funeral Service and noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Clark Funeral Home.

Ms. Ferrell was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Anderson to Eli Burton and Birdie Catherine Rosenbaum Jordon.

She graduated from Boonville High School in Boonville, Calif., and earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and a master’s degree in extension education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She worked as a counselor for the Small Business Development Center from 1987-1999. After retirement, she was a business consultant.

Survivors include a son, Donald Ferrell II of Columbia; a daughter, Sharon Harris of Hattiesburg, Miss.; two sisters, Marie Chase of Slater and Naomi Holloway of Anderson; and a grandchild.

Five sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

Mr. Acton was born June 1, 1929, in McBaine to John J. and Eunice Vermillion Acton. He married Katherine Gray on May 14, 1949, in Columbia, and she survives.

He was pastor of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Other survivors include two sons, Allen Acton of Columbia and John Acton of Moberly; a daughter, Linda Wait of Columbia; a sister, Lillian Ridgeway of Hallsville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Walter Daniel Acton and Jason Acton; three brothers, Lester Acton, Ivan Acton and Wallace Acton; two half-brothers, Jack Acton and John Acton; and a sister, Myrtle Turner.

George Richard Cellar, 76, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 St. Charles Road, with the Rev. Michael Keith officiating.

Mr. Cellar was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Geneva, Neb., to Henry Rankin Cellar and Mildred Leigh Johnson Cellar. He married Shirley Jean Fries on Nov. 25, 1953, and she survives.

He graduated from Benton High School in St. Joseph. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University.

He was employed by Ralston Purina Co. more than 14 years and by MFA Inc. for 13 years, retiring as vice president. He was a member of the executive committee of the American Feed Manufacturing Association. He was also a member of the American Legion, Twilight Lodge 114, Moolah Shrine, Tiger Shrine Club Pachyderms and the American Management Association. He served on the Baseball Diamond Council in Columbia for many years.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors also include a daughter, Carlee Cellar of Brussels, Belgium; two sons, Kirk Cellar of Columbia and Matthew Cellar of Lee’s Summit; two brothers, Robert Cellar and Ray Cellar, both of Geneva; and three grandchildren.

Robert Calvin Marbach, 77, of Columbia died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Dick Ramsey officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Marbach was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Jacksonville, Ill., to the Rev. William Henry and Harriet C. Reitz Marbach. He married Mary Nicholson on Sept. 1, 1950, in Evansville, Ind., and she survives.

He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Lake Forest College in Chicago. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia and the First Presbyterian Men’s Group. He was also a member of the American Legion, Boone County Pachyderm Club and Navy League of the United States.

Other survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Stuck of Columbia and Jane Kendle of Goshen, Ind.; a brother, William Marbach of Chicago; and three grandchildren.

Goldie Mae Proctor, 81, of Columbia died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Proctor was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Boone County to James Edgar and Bertie Mae Bea Wood.

She married Herman Wilson Proctor on Jan. 11, 1941, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

She was employed by the University of Missouri-Columbia, Residential Life Department for 22 years. She received the Chancellor’s Award and was elected to be an honored member of the Mystical Seven from the University of Missouri.

She was a foster grandparent and was known as "Grandma Goldie." She was a member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Northway and Phyllis Stone, both of Columbia; two brothers, LeRoy Wood of Kansas City and Ray Wood of Lawson; two sisters, Norene Wood of Columbia and Maxine Anderson of Kansas City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Allene Blackburn; and two brothers, Clarence Wood and A.J. Wood.

Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn O’Blennis of Columbia, Jeanette Barlow of Tulsa, Okla., and Joann Stevens of Springfield; a sister, Irene Vollarth of Boonville; and seven grandchildren.

Rolla F. Williams Jr., 81, of Columbia, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

There will be a private service at his farm. No visitation is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 W. Business Loop 70.

Mr. Williams was born March 6, 1921, in St. Louis to Rolla and Ila Williams.

He married Dorothy Jane Cluster on Dec. 3, 1942, and she survives.

He worked for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Co. and Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. He formed a St. Louis organization for retail tobacco dealers called the Tobacco Table. Later, he worked for Anheuser-Busch as a Food Store Representative in seven states, and as a field sales manager with Schlitz Brewery.

He settled in Columbia and owned and operated Glenn’s Café. He has raised cattle and sold real estate since selling the restaurant.

He was a member of Twilight Lodge No. 114, Scottish Rite, Aleppo Grotto, Moolah Temple Shrine and the Tiger Shrine.

He was also a member of the Olivet Christian Church and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Floyd of Brandon, Fla.; two sons, Tim Williams of Boonville and Chuck Williams of Columbia; and four grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Rolla F. Williams III.

Mrs. Coats was born Dec. 18, 1933, in Hillsdale to John Walker Ferguson and Althea Caston.

She married Lawrence Eugene Coats, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Douglass High School and was formerly employed at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She was a member of Russell Chapel CME Church and a member of its Stewardess Board.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois Tolson, Leta Stemmons and Libby Ellis, all of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Jean Hickam of Columbia; three brothers, William McKee Sr. and Howard Turner, both of Columbia, and John Richard Ferguson of Kansas City; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ethel Sanders Roberts, 89, of Columbia died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at West Village Manor.

Mrs. Roberts was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Stover to Reuben B. and Nettie May Gerlt Sanders. She married John Thomas Roberts on Jan. 17, 1937, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

She worked for Boone Hospital Center for 10 years before retiring. She was a 67-year charter member of First Church of God, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Clark of Columbia; a half-brother, Paul Robinson of St. Louis; a sister, Catherine Sunrise of Norborne; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mervin L. Wells, 79, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

Mr. Wells was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Pollock, to Benjamin and Etta Harrington Wells.

He married Mary House on April 8, 1946, in Columbia, and she survives.

He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II in Europe. He was a truck driver with Missouri Concrete for 25 years and a driver for Joe Machens Ford for several years. He was a member of the Truth Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church in Boonville.

Survivors also include four sons, Mervin Wells Jr., of Clark, Robert Wells and Melvin Wells, both of Columbia, and Kenneth Wells of New Bloomfield; a daughter, Kathy Alley of Edwards; two sisters, Maudie Wickam of Fore Acre, Okla., and Nora Clyod of the state of Washington; a brother, Dwayne Wells of Phoenix; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Palmer was born Dec. 1, 1938, in Boone County to Trustin Palmer and Eldora Pauley.

He married Erma Bledsoe on Jan. 3, 1959, in Columbia, and she survives.

He lived his entire life in Boone County. He was a member of the Forum Boulevard Christian Church where he was involved in the Helping Hands Ministry. He was a member and past president of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and was also a member of T.P.A.

He worked for the University of Missouri-Columbia and later at MBA Woodhaven as the director of maintenance. He owned a remodeling business for a few years.

Survivors also include a son, Dennis Palmer of Columbia; a daughter, Rhonda Young of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gene E. Huff, 62, of Columbia died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Dr. Huff was born March 12, 1940, in St. Louis to Howard and Mary Klohr Huff.

He married Darlene Sights on March 28, 1964, in Hannibal, and she survives.

He received a bachelor’s degree in zoology and chemistry in 1963, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1966, a secondary school administration certificate in 1971 and a doctorate in secondary school administration in 1978, all from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He was a general science and biology teacher and ninth-grade basketball coach at Parkway Public Schools in Creve Coeur before becoming employed by Columbia Public Schools in 1965. He was a guidance counselor, then became director of guidance and later assistant principal at Jefferson Junior High School. In 1973, he became principal at Oakland Junior High School and then director of personnel from 1986-98. In 1998, Dr. Huff became associate executive director of programs and personnel, and in 2001, he became director of the Superintendent Search Program with the Missouri School Boards Association.

Dr. Huff was a member of American Society of Association Executives, American Association of School Personnel Administrators and the Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, having served as its vice president, president and chapter delegate.

He was named Columbia Public Schools’ Outstanding Administrator of the Year in 1984.

He also was a member of the Daniel Boone Little League, serving on its board from 1979-80; the Hickman High School Music Boosters, serving as co-president from 1979-80; the Mayor’s Task Force for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse from 1983-86; the city of Columbia’s Substance Abuse Commission from 1986-88; Columbia Rotary South since 1991; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Boone County Board of Directors from 1992-95; the MU College of Education Alumni Advisory Board from 1992-96; and the MU Graduate School Advisory Committee and community representative from 1992-98. He also was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

Survivors also include two sons, Travis Huff of Columbia and Mitch Huff of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, Glen Huff of Southlake, Texas; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Huff.

Richard G. Ganey, 85, of New Market, Ala., formerly of Columbia, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala.

Mr. Ganey was born March 28, 1917, in Florida to Walter and Ruby Croft Ganey.

He served in the 5th Air Force during World War II. He operated Bell Brothers Shoe Store in Columbia for more than 30 years. He and his wife moved to Alabama four years ago. He was a Southern Baptist.

Brooksie Mae Murray, 79, of Columbia died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Murray was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Providence to Roy Race and Mary Susan Bennett Acton.

She lived her entire life in Columbia, where she had a baby-sitting service in her home. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Roy Murray of Columbia; two daughters, June Palmer of Columbia and Phyllis Richner of Fulton; a brother, Homer Acton of Columbia; a sister, Ruth Nadine Thornton of Columbia; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Kenneth C. Forbes, 65, of Kearney, formerly of Fayette, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at his home after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Forbes was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Fayette to D. Cecil and Helen Biswell Forbes.

He married Rebecca A. "Becky" Burch on Oct. 20, 1962, in Fayette, and she survives.

He graduated from Armstrong High School and Central College in Fayette with a degree in business education. He was an accountant and auditor. He worked for MFA Inc. for 26 years, the last seven of which as the tax manager. He later worked for Profit Retrieval Systems of Houston, Profit Retrieval Group of San Juan Capastrano, Calif., and Liberty Hospital in Liberty.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Kearney and a former member of Broadway Christian Church in Columbia.

Survivors also include two daughters, Samantha Brewer of Columbia and Stephanie Peterson of Gladstone; two sisters, Dayna Salsgiver of Manchester and Deb Ferren of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Jack W. Phillips, 56, of Columbia died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Phillips was born Jan. 16, 1947, in Scranton, Pa., to Jack W. and Wanda Robinson Phillips and they survive in Iverness, Fla.

He married Bronwynn Noakes on Jan. 13, 1968, in Taylor, Pa., and she survives.

Mr. Phillips served with the U.S. Naval Reserve during high school and the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was hired by the Columbia Police Department on Feb. 27, 1975, as a patrol officer and was promoted to sergeant on Jan. 3, 1978. On Dec. 6, 1984, he was transferred to the investigative section as the Person’s Unit sergeant. He retired from the department on March 21, 1997. During his career he was a hostage negotiation team member, field training officer, and instructor for the department. On Oct. 1, 1980, he received the Ribbon of Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Philips also served five years as Deputy Marshall for the 13th Judicial District Courthouse. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church, Police Officers Association, and Ducks Unlimited.

Other survivors include two daughters, Jayme Phillips and Jennifer "Jena" Phillips, both of Columbia; a brother, Jeff Phillips of Manassas, Va.; two sisters, Patricia Phillips of Phoenix and Robin Smerdon of Moscow, Pa.; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Megan Marie Phillips.

Mr. Harmon was born June 14, 1927, in Columbia to Shady Lilbert and Elsie Leah Charlton Harmon.

He married Eileen Wallace on Aug. 7, 1948, in Ashland, and she survives.

He was a lineman for Boone Electric Cooperative for 38 years before retiring.

Survivors also include two sons, Dale Harmon of Columbia and Mike Harmon of Auxvasse; two brothers, Larry Harmon of Hallsville and W.J. Harmon of Millersburg; three sisters, Yvonne Bryant, Shirley Smith and Dorothy McBride, all of Columbia; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Chariton County to Charles W. and Fleeta Lucille Naylor Twyman.

She married Thoms Benton "T.B." Smith in Columbia in 1934, and he preceded her in death.

She moved to Indiana in 1994. She farmed near Prairie Home for more than 50 years. She wrote a monthly article in American Saddlebred Magazine. She was a longtime member of Pisgah Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Hope of West Lafayette; a son, William Smith of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Golah Carpenter Roerhs of Bunceton; a brother, Roy Edwards Jr. of Prairie Home; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Benton Charles Smith, also preceded her in death.

Emeline S. Aslin, 84, of Columbia, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at University Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Columbia, with Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Mrs. Aslin was born June 5, 1918, in Duluth, Minn., to George and Hedwig Jendraszek Czapinski. On Jan. 9, 1945, she married Wynard E. Aslin in Michigan, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Aslin of Manhattan, Kan., and Larry Aslin of Fayetteville, Ark.; a daughter, Medarda Hoffmann of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Sulkowski and Ben Sulkowski.

Patricia Ann Helming, 63, of Columbia died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at The Bluffs.

Mrs. Helming was born June 4, 1939, in St. Charles to Anna Helen Davis. She married Louis W. Helming on July 14, 1960, in St. Charles, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Columbia Health Occupations School and was a licensed practical nurse at University Hospital and Columbia Regional Hospital. She retired in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Dyann Helming of Columbia, and her mother, Anna Davis Becker of Columbia.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Alisha Danyell Helming; and a son, Timothy Earl Newman.

Maxine B. Stewart, 78, of Columbia died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in her home.

Mrs. Stewart was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Moberly to Clarence and Josie Briscoe.

She married Ralph E. "Boot" Stewart in 1946, and he survives.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed an additional 30 hours of post-graduate study.

She taught mathematics at MU, the University of South Dakota and Hickman High School. She was also a guidance counselor at Hickman until her retirement in 1986.

She was a member of and past president of Chapter GK of PEO.

Survivors also include two daughters, Judith S. Heeter of Mission Hills, Kan., and Nancy J. Stewart of Market Drayton, England; two sons, Thomas S. Stewart of Mission Hills, Kan., and Ronald M. Stewart of Evergreen, Colo.; and 13 grandchildren.

Donald R. Lewis, 76, of Columbia died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at Ruegg Funeral Home in Piedmont. Visitation will be 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the funeral home.

Mr. Lewis was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Sutton Hollow to Issom and Ruth Lewis. He married Eunice E. Wells, and she survives.

Mr. Lewis was a teacher at Hickman High School in Columbia, retiring in 1988.

William McBaine, 87, of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at South Hampton Place.

Mr. McBaine was born Sept. 21, 1915, in Midway to William Jessie and Carrie Belle Wilcox McBaine. On Dec. 19, 1935, he married Sallie Nichols in Columbia, and she preceded him in death.

Mr. McBaine was an Army veteran of World War II. He belonged to Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Koch and Brenda Baker, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

Two brothers, E.E. McBaine and Ellery McBaine, and two sisters, Lucille Shipe and Mary Zaring, preceded him in death.

Alberta "Pat" Virginia Tanner, 65, of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Ms. Tanner was born April 2, 1937, in El Paso, Ill., to Walter and Rose Miller Armstrong.

She was employed with medical records at Boone Hospital Center.

Survivors include two sons, John Tanner and Steve Tanner, both of Columbia; a brother, Jerry Armstrong of El Paso, Ill.; three sisters, Betty Parchman of Peoria, Ill., Donna Rynearson of Bellevue, Ill., and Ruby Dirks of Washington, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Marvin Armstrong.

James Clinton Cope, 86, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Cypress Cove Lodge in Fort Myers.

Services were Feb. 9 at Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ and were officiated by Randall Niehoff.

Dr. Cope was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Lexington to John Quincy and Marian Shelton Cope.

He married Anne Martha Camp on June 14, 1941, in Tottenuille, N.Y., and she survives.

He graduated from Lexington High School. He graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, in 1937. He completed medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1939 and received a master’s degree in anatomy. He received a doctorate from New York University School of Medicine in 1941.

He joined the Army Air Forces in 1942 and served at the rank of captain until his discharge in 1945. He was stationed in East Anglia, England, during World War II as a flight surgeon for the Fighter Command of the 8th Air Force, 352nd Fighter Squadron.

He completed his surgical residence at Kansas City General Hospital after the war and specialized in urology. He was a physician in private practice in Columbia from 1949 until his retirement in 1976. Before his retirement he served as chief of staff at Boone County Hospital.

He was one of the original investors in Columbia Regional Hospital and was a founding partner in the Doctors Building at 1502 E. Broadway. He also served as medical director at Stephen’s College and served outlying communities in need of urological services.

He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, president of the Missouri State Medical Association from 1975 to 1976 and was published in professional journals including Missouri Medicine and Medical Economics.

Survivors also include three daughters, Nancy Schipper of O’Fallon, Diane Walker of Florence, Ore., and Marian Minor of Columbia; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Cope and Joseph Cope.

Patrick H. Knowles, 67, of Columbia died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Knowles was born Oct. 24, 1935, in New York City to William and Mary O’Neil Knowles.

He married Barbara Torrace on April 23, 1960, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and she survives.

He graduated form Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1959 and received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1974.

Survivors also include two sons, David Knowles of Atlanta and Patrick Knowles Jr. of Norwich, Conn.; a daughter, Susan Knowles of St. Louis; a brother, William Knowles of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Mary Rogers of Charleston; and four grandchildren.

Alberta F. Morton, 90, of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at South Hampton Place.

She worked at Trubie’s Market from 1944 to 1951. She owned and operated the Eat Shop Café in Columbia from 1953 to 1973. She was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church in Columbia.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Sutton of Columbia; a stepson, Lewis H. Sutton Jr. of Fayette; a stepdaughter, Barbara Baker of Columbia; a brother, John D. Edwards of Moberly; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Joseph James Marsh, 80, of Rocheport died Monday, March 3, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Marsh was born May 23, 1922, in Bloomfield, N.J., to Anthony and Josephine Mustachio.

He married Marian Trent on March 28, 1951, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and she survives.

He graduated from Nutley High School in 1940. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and was honorably discharged 10 months later.

He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Engineering. He and his twin brother Sam started Broad Woodworking Company at Fourth and Broadway, which was later known as Broad Building Supply. In 1964 he started J&S Farms with Shorthorn cattle. He became a top exhibitor of both Limousin and Shorthorn cattle. In 1967 he and his twin brother started Marsh Building Company and developed homes and rental properties southwest of Columbia in Belleview Acres and Country Hill subdivisions. He began Greenridge Estates in Rocheport in 1998.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Survivors also include two daughters, Diana Ivy of Milan, Italy, and Deborah Perkins of Rocheport; a son, Joseph Marsh Jr. of Newton, Iowa; two brothers, Sam Marsh of Rocheport and Anthony Mustachio Jr. of West Orange, N.J.; a sister, Joan Rinaldi of Bloomfield; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

June Flint, 82, of Columbia died Monday, March 3, 2003, at a Columbia hospital.

Mrs. Flint was born June 26, 1920, in New Hampton to Perry and Lelia Browning Funk.

She married Earl Flint on Dec. 31, 1942, and he preceded her in death. She married Ernest Flint on Feb. 15, 1986, and he preceded her in death.

She was a retired special education and elementary school teacher. She spent two years at Maryville State Teachers College and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a member of First Christian Church in Columbia.

Survivors include two sons, David Flint of St. Louis and Ralph Flint of Columbia; two daughters, Teresa Hodges of St. Peters and Jennifer Flint of Columbia; a stepson, Steven Flint of Lombard, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Patty Glyshaw of Jacksonville, Ill.; four grandsons; three stepgrandchildren; a sister, Margaret Cover of New Hampton; and a brother, Keith Funk of Vero Beach, Fla.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ross Funk, and a sister, Deane Seymour.

George Frederick Nickolaus, 72, of Columbia died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Columbia.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Missouri United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating.

Mr. Nickolaus was born Aug. 29, 1930, in St. Louis to Walter and Ruth Stuetzer Nickolaus.

He married Charlene Willson on Dec. 19, 1954, in Versailles, Mo., and she survives.

He attended Washington University in St. Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1952. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

He graduated from the MU School of Law in 1957. He was city attorney in Columbia from 1959 to 1960, city counselor from 1960 to 1966 and mayor of Columbia from 1967 to 1969.

He was instrumental in setting up and gaining approval for Columbia Regional Airport. He led the effort and wrote the bill to create a retirement plan for municipal and county employees. He was dean of the College of Public and Community Services at MU and a municipal judge for the city of Columbia. He was a historian and a Bible scholar.

Survivors also include four sons, Charles Nickolaus of Ashland, David Nickolaus and Daniel Nickolaus, both of Columbia and Nathan Nickolaus of Jefferson City; and six grandchildren.

Muriel Battle, 73, of Columbia died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center after battling pulmonary fibrosis.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Missouri United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Bryan will officiate.

Mrs. Battle was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Mobile, Ala., to Herschell and Juanita Davis Williams. She married Eliot Battle on June 28, 1950, and he survives.

Mrs. Battle attended Fisk University in Nashville, received a bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University in Tallhassee, Fla., and master’s and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She received an honorary doctorate from Lincoln University, where she was past president of the Board of Trustees.

The Battles moved to Columbia in 1956 to teach at Columbia Public Schools, where she worked for 40 years. She retired in 1996 as the district’s first female associate superintendent.

She received numerous awards during her career, including Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year with her husband in 2000.

Other survivors include a son, Eliot Battle Jr. of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Donna Pierce and Carolyn Thomas, both of Chicago, and Muriel Browder of Lee’s Summit; two sisters, Carolyn Gavin of Sacramento, Calif., and Sandra Rackley of Tallahassee; and six grandchildren.

A brother, Herschell Williams Jr., preceded her in death.

Susanna Alexander, 86, of Columbia died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at The Bluffs in Columbia.

Mrs. Alexander was born Feb. 13, 1917, in St. James to George and Violet Hubbard Laun.

She married Donald Alexander in 1938 in Union, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from St. James High School in 1934. She received an associate’s degree from Stephens College in 1936, a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1938, and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Denver in 1952.

She worked as a librarian at the James Memorial Library, the Stephens College Library and the Missouri State Library. She was director at Columbia Public and Daniel Boone Regional Library from 1955 to 1965.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in St. James, the League of Women Voters, the Stephens College Alumnae Club, the American Association of University Women and Altrusa International.

She received the Alumnae Achievement Award from Stephens College in 1959 and the Beta Phi Mu Award of Merit in 1978.

She received recognition from the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education in 1977 and recognition from the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education and the Missouri Library Association in 1982.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Thomas of Conifer, Colo.; a sister, Betty Lu Hughes of St. James; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

James Lee Burks, 63, of Nashua, Iowa, and formerly of Harrisburg, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Waverly Memorial Hospital in Waverly, Iowa.

Mary Naomi Lewis, 90, of Columbia died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Lewis was born April 10, 1912, in Wilton to Harvey and Alpha Jane Glascock Rippeto. On Dec. 21, 1929, she married Leno Lewis in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

She had worked for the American Press Book Bindery and was a homemaker. She attended Goshen Primitive Baptist Church in Wilton.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Slate of Columbia; three sisters, Marjorie White and Opal Meeks, both of Portland, Ore., and Ella Sapp of Columbia; a brother, Carl Rippeto of Kansas City; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Frances Lewis; two sisters, Edith Wood and Ina Sapp; a brother, Derby Rippeto; and a grandchild, Maria Ann Slate.

Born August 7, 1914, he was raised near Sheldon, Missouri with five brothers and one sister. Working on the family farm and later delivering ice by horse drawn wagon in Carthage, Missouri enabled him to begin working his way through college graduating with three degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Having earned his PhD in Agricultural Economics in 1953, Dr. Cunningham retired Professor Emeritus in 1973 at Columbia after a combined 28 years with the University of Missouri and several years with the University of Michigan.

His career began with the University of Missouri and the US Department of Agriculture as a County Extension Agent. He also worked closely with his brother Jack in Sedalia, Missouri and together they established two successful family-owned ice manufacturing and cold storage businesses in their respective towns. During this time he also served several terms as an elected city councilman and mayor pro-tem of Columbia. After retirement, he worked at the state legislature in Jefferson City, Missouri as a spokesman for the Missouri Retail Grocers Association, and later served as a marketing and food distri¬bution consultant to several large grocery chains throughout the midwest.

Sixty two years ago Clyde and Marialice Singleton of Tribune, Kansas were married in Kansas City, Missouri. After retirement in Columbia, Missouri they later moved to Rancho Bernardo near San Diego and resided there for twenty years before moving to an assisted living facility in Sonora, California last year.

He was a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of various teaching and agri¬cultural organi¬za¬tions. He was past president of the Rancho Bernardo Seven Oaks Woodworking Club that made hundreds of toys each year for under privileged children at Christmas. He was awarded lifetime membership by the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club last year after more than fifty years of service.

His family said he loved gardening and was always willing to teach others and share his knowledge of plant life and agriculture. They said he will be remembered for his generosity and concern for others, his contagious laugh, a sense of humor at all times, and they will always miss his narration of many stories relating to past family events.

He is survived by his wife Marialice of Sonora; his sister Jocie Kircher of Greencastle, Indiana; and a brother, George Cunningham of Jefferson City, Missouri; two sons and daughters in law, Hal and Clarene Cunningham of Sonora; and Kim and Sandy Cunningham of Oklahoma City; and two grandsons Tyler and Travis Cunningham of Oklahoma City. There are many nieces and nephews and his extended family includes Troy and Cori Ashton, great grandchildren Kennedi and Parker Ashton; and Shane and Keri Tipton, and great grandson Connor Tipton all of Sonora.

A private service is planned later at inurnment to be at the Community Christian Church Columbarium, Jefferson City, Missouri. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

C. Melvin Bradley, 83, of Columbia died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, at First Baptist Church, 1112 E. Broadway, with the Rev. John Baker officiating. A private family burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

Mr. Bradley was born March 2, 1920, in Kaiser to Charles Madison and Ida Avis Scrivner Bradley. He married Gloria Brockman on June 20, 1945, in Eldon, and she survives.

He held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a doctoral degree from Oklahoma State University. He was an equine specialist and professor of animal science at the MU. In his retirement, he wrote several books and became known as a mule historian. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of First Baptist Church.

Other survivors include a son, David Bradley of Ames, Iowa; a daughter, Susan Bradley of Versailles, Ky.; a sister, Millie Huddleston of Iberia; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Glenn L. McElroy, 85, of Columbia died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Lenoir Health Care Center.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St., with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services Saturday at the church.

Dr. McElroy was born March 2, 1918, in New Franklin to Glenn A. and Avanelle Burgin McElroy.

He married Mary Moore on May 13, 1947, in San Francisco, and she survives.

He graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayette and Washington University School of Medicine of St. Louis. He served with the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.

He started a private medical practice in Columbia in 1951 and was the University of Missouri-Columbia Athletic Department team physician for over 40 years. He was also the co-founder of the Columbia Orthopedic Group and one of the founders of Columbia Regional Hospital.

He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church of Columbia.

Survivors also include a son, Glenn L. McElroy Jr., of Columbia; a daughter, Pam McElroy Sand of Alachua, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Fleeta Summers.

Edward "J.L." Birmingham, 76, of Columbia, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Birmingham was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Greenville to John Riley and Flossie L. Birmingham.

He married Mary Ruth Turner on June 7, 1945 in Piggott, Ark., and she survives.

He served in the Navy.

He moved to Boone County in 1950.

He was the owner/operator of Birmingham’s Antiques and Used Furniture from 1966 until his retirement in 1987.

Survivors also include two sons, Geary E. Birmingham of Columbia and Dennis Ray Birmingham of Kingdom City; two daughters, Barbara Jean Birmingham of Columbia and Carolyn Ann Cook of Springfield. Other survivors include two brothers, Carl Birmingham and Raymond Birmingham, both of Piggott, Ark.; two sisters, Mary Steinbrooke of Millstadt, Ill., and Frankie Gibson of Piggott, Ark.; and five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Virgil E. Sapp, 95, of Columbia died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Sapp was born Feb. 12, 1908, in Boone County to Everett E. and Ona C. Rippeto Sapp.

He married Ina L. Rippeto on Oct. 20, 1927, in Boone County, and she preceded him in death.

He owned and operated his own carpentry business until his retirement.

He was a member of the Goshen Primitive Baptist Church in Wilton since 1934. He was ordained as a Deacon of the church in 1947.

Survivors include two sons, Radell Sapp and Melvin Sapp, both of Columbia; two daughters, Fern Huffman of Columbia and Ina Sue Ronimous of St. Joseph; a brother, Archilee W. Sapp of Petersburg, Ind.; and two sisters, Wanda Sapp of Ashland and Juanita Coleman of Midland, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Fred, Emery, Gerald and Alva Sapp and an infant brother; two sisters, Ruby Mitchem and Julia Rippeto; and his parents.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Boone County to Harry G. and Eva Jane Turner Coleman.

She married George Smith Jr., on Nov. 10, 1942, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church.

Iris Drucilla Morris, 93, of Eckert, Colo., formerly of Columbia, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Horizons Healthcare in Eckert, Colo.

She was born Dec. 12, 1909, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to LeDrue and Martha Susan Ridgeway Lyth Sr.

She married Thomas Hale Morris on Aug. 24, 1931, in Fayette, and he preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended business school in Columbia.

She worked as a secretary at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She was a member of Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Florence Ann Pratt of Hotchkiss, Colo.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

C. Merrill "Woody" Woodruff, 92, of Columbia died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Columbia Health Care Center.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St., with Rev. Jim Bryan officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Burial will follow a graveside service at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Morris Chapel Church Cemetery in Bethany.

Dr. Woodruff was born April 8, 1910, in Kansas City to Jesse Garrett and Ada Johns Woodruff.

He married Juanita McCollum on May 16, 1937, and she preceded him in death.

He graduated from the University of Missouri College of Agriculture in 1932. He received has master’s degree in agronomy from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1939 and after civilian wartime service completed his doctorate in 1953.

He was director of the Erosion Experiment Station in Bethany and was instructor, associate professor and professor in soils at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was chairman of the Soils Department in 1966 and retired in 1976 but maintained an active presence at the university as professor emeritus.

He served with the United States Army Signal Corps research unit at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, during World War II. He worked on radar systems and airborne magnetic submarine detectors.

He authored numerous papers and articles and an irrigation chart that continues to serve as benchmark guidance for farmers on when and how much to irrigate their crops.

He served as assistant Scoutmaster and as committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 10 in Columbia. He led three canoe expeditions with Central-Missouri Scouts to the Quetico Boundary Waters Park in Ontario. He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity and served as its faculty advisor for many years. He was a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy. He was also a member of the Society of Sigma Xi and of Gamma Sigma Delta.

Survivors include a sister, Ada Mae Clough of Lexington, Mo.; two sons, James M. Woodruff of Layton, Utah, and Robert A. Woodruff of Jamison, Penn.; and two grandchildren.

His brother, Clyde, preceded him in death.

Richard F. Johnson Jr., 89, of Columbia died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Columbia Health Care Center in Columbia.

He was a mechanic.

Ronald Gene Hunt, 69, of Columbia died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at his home of progressive pseudo-supranuclear palsy.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Olivet Christian Church, with the Rev. Dennis Swearingen officiating. After cremation, ashes are to be interred at Parkview Mausoleum in Kirksville. Arrangements are under the direction of Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 St. Charles Road.

Mr. Hunt was born March 31, 1934, to Fred Mason Hunt and Virginia Ruth Shumate Hunt of Edina, and raised by his grandparents, Charles and Fannie Hunter Shumate of Edina. He married Doris M. Gosney, and she survives.

Mr. Hunt was a certified optician in Columbia for years. A graduate of Edina High School, he joined the Air Force in 1952 and retired after 20 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Hunt managed Ostertag Opticians in Quincy, Ill., and Columbia; later managed Benson’s Optical Shop at University Hospital; and worked for Gene Brown Optical.

Other survivors include a son, Roger Hunt of Jefferson City; two daughters, Diane Hunt of Jefferson City and Denise Tabor of Columbia; two half-brothers, Stanton Luker of Dousman, Wis., and Jeff Luker of Galesburg, Ill.; a half-sister, Janie Mason of Galesburg, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepfather, Ralph Luker, and half-sister, Judy Miller.

Mrs. Falloon was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Webb City to Ernest and Gladys Lacey Liles. On May 21, 1939, she married John Falloon in Jefferson City, and he preceded her in death. She belonged to First Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Lenoir Community Choir, International Students Host Families, Christian Women’s Fellowship’s Parker-Scott Group and the University of Missouri Agriculture Extension Wives Club.

Donald Lawson Keil, 61, of Romaland, Calif., died Monday, April 7, 2003, as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Mr. Keil was born May 24, 1941, in California, Mo., to Chester H. and Lois Carpenter Keil.

He married Marilynn Ball on Feb. 25, 1962, in LaHabra, Calif., and she survives.

He was retired. He was a 1959 graduate of California High School in California, Mo. He was also a graduate of Fullerton Junior College in Fullerton, Calif., and of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He was a member of Rose Drive Baptist Church, of Placentia, Calif.

M. Stanley Ginn, 92, of Columbia died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon.

Mr. Ginn was born April 3, 1911, in Lawrence County to Milton Sherman and Sallie Mae Wright Ginn. In 1934 he married Rosemary Bewick Lucas of Columbia, and she preceded him in death.

He was a 1928 graduate of Miller High School and attended Drury College and Southwest Missouri State Teachers College. He continued his education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he served as president of Delta Theta Phi and earned his J.D. in 1934.

Elected prosecuting attorney of Lawrence County in 1934, he served in that office for three successive terms.

He was appointed superintendent of the Missouri Highway Patrol in 1941 by then-Gov. Forrest Donnell.

He served as a lieutenant in the Navy in the Pacific Theatre from 1944 to 1946.

He was later elected chairman of the board of directors for Missouri Book Store Inc., a position he held until the company was sold to Barnes & Noble in 1985.

He was chairman of the Boone County Republican Committee from 1948 to 1963 and was elected Young Republican National Committeeman for Missouri from 1934 to 1941. He was a member of the Republican State Committee from 1950 to 1968, serving for eight years on its executive committee.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Ginn Almond of Columbia and Sally Ginn Hood of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Ginn and Lawrence Oliver Ginn; and two sisters, Flarra Elizabeth Ginn Lewy and Vella Ginn Blaine.

Leo Cram, 67, of Columbia died of cancer Thursday, April 24, 2003, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Brockhaus-Scott Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Neb., with Father Donald Kros officiating.

Dr. Cram was born Nov. 21, 1935, in Spooner, Wis., to Leo F. and Irene Hawkins Cram. He married Sally Welch on Aug. 11, 1956, in Cherokee, Iowa, and she survives.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural economics at Kansas State University, a doctorate in agricultural economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a specialist-in-aging certificate at the University of Michigan.

He served on the cooperative extension faculties at KSU, UW-Madison and the University of Missouri-Columbia for 35 years.

Survivors also include three daughters, Barbara Rooney of Dallas, Debra Metsker of Leavenworth, Kan., and Julie Bark of Kingsport, Tenn.; a son, Jim Cram of Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren; a sister, LaVera McCallum of Lincoln, Neb.; and a brother, Tom Cram of Ashland, Wis.

Genell Barnes, 95, of Columbia died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the Columbia Manor Care Center in Columbia.

She was a member of the first graduating class of Hickman High School in Columbia, in 1928. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 50 years, a charter member of the Pink Ladies at Boone Hospital Center and a member of the Rebekkah Lodge.

She worked as a tailor at Barth’s Clothing Store in Columbia for more than 45 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Sue Fenton of Columbia; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

George E. Koffler, 66, of Columbia died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mr. Koffler was born April 9, 1937, in Kansas City to Karl and Therese Kary Koffler.

He was a retired pharmacist.

He was a graduate of Paseo High School in Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he earned a degree in pharmacology. He worked a number of years as a pharmacist in Kansas City and in Kansas, Illinois and Texas. A resident of Columbia more than 20 years, he was a pharmacist at University Hospital, Boone Hospital Center and other pharmacies before retiring in 2001.

He was an Army veteran and a member of the Phi Delta Chi professional fraternity and the UMKC Alumni Association, where he was a former board member.

Survivors include a son, George A. Koffler of Kansas City, and a brother, Carl A. Koffler of Fayetteville, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter.

Edward Jim Vredenburgh Jr., 81, of Columbia died Sunday, April 27, 2003, at The Bluffs in Columbia.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with David Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Vredenburgh was born May 25, 1921, in Martin City to Edward and Leona Young Vredenburgh.

He married Shirley Hahn on Aug. 29, 1969, in Columbia, and she preceded him in death.

He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He served as a lieutenant junior grade torpedo and gunnery officer on the USS Ericsson during World War II.

He was an assistant instructor, an assistant professor at MU, where he became an associate professor emeritus in 1989.

He was a member of the American Bowling Congress and the Columbia Hall of Fame.

Survivors include a son, Jim Vredenburgh of Columbia; three stepdaughters; and a stepson.

A sister, Mary Louise Calvert, also preceded him in death.

Ted Logan Ernest Eaton, 87, of Columbia died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at The Bluffs in Columbia.

Mr. Eaton was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Church Hill, Tenn., to William and Elva Bellamy Eaton.

He married Aurevia Palmer on April 12, 1943, in St. Louis, and she survives.

He was an Army veteran and a member of Masonic Blue Lodge, Allepo Grotto and Twilight Lodge. He was a member of Carpenter’s Union No. 1925 and VFW Post 280.

James Robert Kropp, 58, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., formerly of Columbia, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at I.H.S. Nursing Home in Tarpon Springs.

Mr. Kropp was born April 6, 1945, in Milwaukee to Robert Kropp and Bernadine Wiese.

He married Sharyn Kropp on Oct. 11, 1969, in Chicago.

He graduated from Marquette University High School in Milwaukee. He received bachelor’s degrees in marketing and radio/television from Marquette University in Milwaukee. He received a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida-Gainesville.

He worked from 1968 to 1970 in commercial broadcasting research in Wisconsin, New York, Ohio and Illinois. In 1977 he was the research director for PBS station WUFT-TV and an adjunct lecturer in advertising and media planning at UF. In 1981 he was a U.S. Fulbright researcher at the University of Warsaw Institute of Journalism and Political Science in Warsaw, Poland. In 1983 he was an assistant professor of journalism at Ohio University-Athens. In 1988 he was an instructor in advertising and a doctoral student in journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He was a member of the Columbia Choral Ensemble and the Newman Center music ministry team.

Survivors include ex-wife Sharon Kropp of Columbia; a daughter, Rebecca Kropp of Trinity, Fla.; a son, Stephen Kropp of Trinity; a granddaughter; and a sister, Victoria Kropp of Milwaukee.

Fred A. Clark, 87, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., formerly of Columbia, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla., after a stroke.

Private memorial services will be Friday, May 9, in Fort Myers.

Mr. Clark was born June 28, 1915, in Columbia to James Franklin Clark and Alice Berry Clark.

He married Cassie B. Burke in 1938 in Orlando, Fla., and she survives.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Twilight Lodge No. 114, A.F. & A.M. and the Moolah Temple Shrine. He was a 32nd-degree Mason with the Columbia Valley Scottish Rite.

He owned Clark’s Luncheonette in Columbia until 1967. He retired from Stephen’s College as a food service manager.

Survivors also include two daughters, Sondra Howe of Brentwood, Tenn., and Dixie Lee Shaw of Atlanta; a grandson; and a brother-in-law, N.C. Ficklin of Columbia.

A sister, Annette Ficklin, preceded him in death.

Mildred Lorene Lindner, 84, of Columbia died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at West Village Manor in Columbia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Columbia United Church of Christ, 3201 I-70 Drive N.W., with the Rev. Fred Brandenburg officiating. Burial will be in the Zion United Church of Christ cemetery in Union. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Funeral Home, 22 N. Tenth St.

Mrs. Lindner was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Osage County to William Alfred and Mary Ellen Tynes Dingley.

She married Virgil Lindner, and he survives.

She was a charter member of Columbia United Church of Christ in Columbia and was involved in the women’s fellowship at the church. She was a member of the American Businesswomen’s Organization in Columbia and the Junior Farmers of America. She worked as an accountant.

Survivors also include two sons, Ivan Lindner of Lee’s Summit and John Lindner of Columbia; two daughters, Mary Rennick of Jefferson City and Val-Rae Solomon of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.

Her parents and a brother, Chauncey Dingley all preceded her in death.

Curtis Ross Weston, 78, of Destin, Fla., formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., following open heart surgery.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 W. Business Loop 70, with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at the funeral home.

Dr. Weston was born June 16, 1924, in Washburn to Elmer Clinton and Ada Antle Weston.

He married Betty Jean Sharrock on June 4, 1950, in Lamar, and she survives.

Dr. Weston was a professor of agricultural education and agricultural engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1956 to 1986. He supervised more than 40 doctoral students during that time and was department chairman of agricultural education.

He wrote several books and was recognized nationally for his work in agricultural mechanics. He was a veteran of World War II.

He and his family owned and exhibited pug dogs, including 12 they imported from England.

He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Columbia and the Kiwanis Club of Destin, Fla., where he was Kiwanian of the Year in 1999. He has been a member of the Missouri United Methodist Church since 1956.

Survivors also include a daughter, Gwen Huber of Golden City; a son, Brent Ross Weston of Falls Church, Va.; a sister, June Osborn of Holiday Island, Ark.; a brother, Wilmer D. Weston of Washington, Mo.; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

William M. Scott, 81, of Columbia died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Scott was born March 19, 1922, in Columbia to Lucille Shelley.

Ella Roberta Sapp, 87, of Columbia died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at South Hampton Place.

Mrs. Sapp was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Wilton to Harvey and Alpha Jane Glascock Rippeto.

She married Andrew Elisha Sapp on July 22, 1933, in Ashland, and he preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker. She attended Goshen Primitive Baptist Church in Wilton and Little Bonne Femme Baptist Church in Columbia.

Survivors include four sons, Larry Sapp, Gary Sapp, Terry Sapp and Michael Sapp, all of Columbia; three daughters, Alpha Lindsay and Jayne Stephens, both of Columbia, and Almeda Curtis of Ashland; a brother, Carl Rippeto of Kansas City; two sisters, Marjorie White and Opal Meeks, both of Portland, Ore; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marva Lou Sapp; a brother, Derby Rippeto; three sisters, Edith Wood, Mary Lewis and Ina Sapp; a grandchild, Rhonda Sapp; and a great-grandchild, Morgan Sapp.

Mr. Bledsoe was born Dec. 22, 1916, in Hartsburg to James T. and Lydia Sappington Bledsoe. On Aug. 27, 1934, he married Norma Rybolt in Ashland, and she survives.

Mr. Bledsoe was a salesman for Bisping Oldsmobile in Columbia for 35 years. He also was a homebuilder and woodcrafter. Mr. Bledsoe was a member of Rocheport Methodist Church.

John Harold Spurgeon, 84, of Columbia died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

He served with the Army during World War II as a medic in China, India and Burma. He was a mechanic with John Deere and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Mildred Brooks Morrow age 81, passed away at Parkway Health and Rehabilitation Center in Stuart, Florida on May 12, 2003.

Mrs. Morrow was born in Mason City, Illinois and worked as a bookkeeper in Bloomington, Illinois and Columbia, Missouri.  She lived in Stuart, Florida for three and one half years coming from Winter Haven, Florida.

Mildred leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Robert E Morrow, Daughters: Nancy J. Heller of Wildes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Bonnie L. Morrow of Stuart, Florida; Rebecca A. Westhues of Columbia, Missouri; Theresa M. Pietrucci of Hobe Sound, Florida; and son, Robert B. Morrow of Shelbourne, Vermont; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Berkley was born Sept. 11, 1929, in Brownsville, Texas, to George and Vera McClure Bird.

She married Parker Hulett in 1950 in Columbia and he preceded her in death. She married Howard Berkley in 1967 in Columbia and he survives.

She earned an associate degree in liberal arts from Stephens College, where she later served as the associate alumni secretary. She was a member of Altrusa and Untied Methodist Church in Columbia.

Mrs. Lines was born Jan. 13, 1910, in St. Paul, Minn., to John Gustave and Lillian Decker Mueller.

She married Clifton Lines on Aug. 31, 1940, in St. Paul, and he preceded her in death.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in St. Paul and did graduate work at the University of Minnesota.

She was a social worker with Ramsey County Welfare in St. Paul from 1931 to 1940. She was church secretary at First Presbyterian Church from 1953 to 1972 and executive secretary of the Kermack-Parker Trust from 1974 to 1989.

She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, Clerk of Session and a member of the church choir from 1947. She was president of Women of the Church, a Circle chairman and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Chapter HK of PEO, American Association of University Women, Faculty Wives of Stephens College, the Meals on Wheels board of directors, the Volunteer Reach to Recovery program of the Cancer Society and the Voluntary Action Center board of directors.

Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Lines Cunningham of Columbia; a son, Clifton Lines Jr. of Boulder, Colo.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John Mueller of St. Paul; and a sister, Marjorie Jenks of St. Paul.

Mary Kathryn O’Reilly, 86, of Arrow Rock died Monday, May 26, 2003, at Pin Oaks Nursing Center in Mexico, Mo.

Mrs. O’Reilly was born Oct. 19, 1916, in Mexico to B. Turner and Julia Cave Williams.

She married Daniel Patrick O’Reilly in 1981, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Christian College in Columbia and the University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

She was a reporter for the Mexico Ledger and won awards from state and national women’s press organizations.

She was editor of campus publications for the University of Missouri-Columbia and was publications and public relations manager at the MU School of Medicine until her retirement in 1981.

She moved from Columbia to Arrow Rock in 1981.

Survivors include five children, Scott A. He retired from the University of Missouri-Columbia as a professor of horticulture.

Mr. Crane was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Boone County to Roy E. and Maude U. McCoy Crane.

He married Goldie Lucille Sapp on Nov. 1, 1941, in Boone County, and she survives.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Nashville Baptist Church. He was a farmer.

He was one of the first board members of Rock Bridge Elementary School. He was an MFA delegate for many years. He was a member of Cedar Valley Riders Club for several years. He retired from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1983 as a paper cutter.

R. Edward "Ed" Perry, 75, of Columbia died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at his home.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with Pastor Pieter Van Waarde officiating.

Mr. Perry was born March 27, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan., to Ralph E. and Juanita Youmans Perry.

He married Mercedes Muir in Hutchinson, Kan, in 1950. He later married Margot Loveland Hagan in 1973, and she survives.

He graduated from Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 1946 and from the University of Kansas in 1950. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

He served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War as an executive officer of Cutter Tamaroa in the North Atlantic Search and Rescue Operations.

He was vice president of his father’s Pontiac Agency in Kansas City. He then owned Perry Motor Imports of Kansas City until 1960. He moved to Columbia in 1961 and founded Perry Chevrolet, Perry Investment Co. and Perry Insurance Co.

He sold his business in 1983 to his son Justin and retired.

He was a member of the Mission Hills Country Club and River Club and a board member of the Kansas City Club. He was a member of the Round Table Luncheon Group and served on the boards of the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Phoenix House and Valley Hope.

Survivors also include a son, Justin M. Perry of Columbia; two daughters, Andrea Perry and Julie Dietz, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Nancy Hodgson of Laguna Woods, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Kim Hagan and Holly Steinhoff, both of Columbia; and 11 grandchildren.

A son, Ralph Perry III, preceded him in death.

Mr. McKibben was born Oct. 5, 1916, near Shamrock to James Marques and Ethel Laws McKibben.

On July 6, 1940, he married Ruth Clark in Mexico, Mo., and she preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of Wellsville High School and the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural engineering. He retired in 1975 after 29 years with the MU agricultural engineering faculty to return to farming.

Survivors include a son, Charlie McKibben of Columbia; a sister, Melba McCoy of Blacksburg, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Marriott; and two brothers, Joseph McKibben and Robert McKibben.

James Samuel McKibben, 86, of Columbia died Friday, May 30, 2003, at The Bluffs.

Marguerite "Rita" Besleme, 62, of Columbia died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Columbia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 914 S. West Blvd. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St.

Mrs. Besleme was born Feb. 3, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Anastasios and Margarita Roussos Arianoutsos.

She married James Harry Besleme on April 27, 1969, and he survives.

She graduated from Prospect Heights High School in Brooklyn. She earned a associate bachelor’s degree in art from Mineral Area College in Flat River.

She moved to Columbia in 1988 with her family.

She worked as an executive secretary with various advertising agencies in New York before moving to Missouri.

She worked at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1989 until April 2003 as secretary to the Office of the Provost and as a senior secretary and executive assistant for University Relations. She was on the university’s Staff Advisory Council from 1998 to 2000.

She was twice the co-chair of the University of Missouri United Way campaign. She was a member and past president of the Columbia chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

She was recognized by the Missouri House of Representatives in House Resolution No. 1367 on April 2 for her service to Missouri and the community.

She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. She participated in organizing the Orthodox community of Columbia.

Survivors also include two daughters, Katherine Besleme of Washington, D.C., and Irene Lobstein of Port of Spain, Trinidad; a son, Harry Besleme of Columbia; a brother, John Arianoutsos of Park Forest, Ill.; and two sisters, Calypso Karahalios of Andover, Mass., and Barbara Aliprantis of Flushing, N.Y.

Goldie Odell Sims, 89, of Bartlesville, Okla., formerly of Columbia, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Bartlesville, Okla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Ken Watson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sims was born June 22, 1913, in Centralia to Willard and Mary Barnes.

She married Claude Sims on May 10, 1935, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death in 1991.

Mrs. Sims was the founder of the Community Garden on Claudell Lane. She was a member of First Christian Church and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Claudine Ayers of Bartlesville, Okla., and Carolyn Whitesides of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Lecil Barnes of Raytown and Harold Barnes of Centralia; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Two sons, John Sims and Floyd Sims, and a brother, Howard Barnes, also preceded her in death.

Kelly D. Fennewald Fuller, 26, of Urbana, Ill., formerly of Columbia, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Services were May 15 at Wikoff Chapel in Urbana.

Mrs. Fuller was born Jan. 22, 1977, in Mexico, Mo., to Perry Fennewald and Catherine Stochmal.

She married Jeff Fuller on June 8, 2002, in Urbana, Ill., and he survives.

She was a receptionist at WILL TV on the University of Illinois campus.

Survivors also include her father; her mother, of Columbia; and a sister, Tonya Fennewald-Hamline of Liberty.

Her grandmother, Anna Stochmal, preceded her in death.

Eugene Paul "Gene" Cassin, 76, of Columbia died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Fred Thayer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Cassin was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Saugerties, N.Y., to Joseph and Bernadine Kessler Cassin.

He married Reba Nelson on Feb. 1, 1950, in Columbia, and she survives.

He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1952.

He worked for Riback Industries as a civil engineer for five years. He then worked in Pennsylvania and New York in the structural steel fabricating industry. In 1972 he worked in water pollution control for the city of New York.

He returned to Missouri to work for the Department of Natural Resources in Jefferson City and retired from there as an environmental engineer in 1994.

He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church. He was active in the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and served on the boards of directors of Phoenix House and The 31st Day. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Survivors also include four daughters, Julia Piland of Arlington, Texas, Lauren Ann Dawson of Southlake, Texas, Cary Taylor of Columbia and Hilary Baumann of St. Joseph; a sister, Lorraine Lopez of Honolulu; five grandsons; and seven granddaughters.

A son, Daniel Cassin, preceded him in death.

Marvin T. Bradley Sr., 77, of Rocheport died Friday, June 6, 2003, at his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Markland-Gardner Funeral Home in New Franklin, with the Rev. Rick Frost officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in New Franklin. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Bradley was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Columbia to Henry and Beulah Jacobs Bradley. On April 28, 1945, he married Dorothy Jane Logwood, and she preceded him in death.

Mr. Bradley was a firefighter with the Columbia Fire Department for several years before moving from Columbia in the 1980s. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Columbia.

Survivors include a son, Marvin Bradley Jr. of Parkville; a daughter, Kay Trent of Columbia; two sisters, Wanda Calvert of Hallsville and Gladys Pruitt of Columbia; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dino Vincenzo Ricciotti, 63, of Columbia died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at University Hospital.

Mr. Ricciotti was born Nov. 28, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Eliseo and Grace Cioffari Ricciotti.

He served in the Army. He retired from Parker Hannifin as an electrical engineer after 22 years of employment. He worked as a consultant after his retirement.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Catherine Ricciotti and Grace Ricciotti, both of Columbia, and Arianna Parker of Fayette; two sons, Edward Ricciotti and Dino Ricciotti II, both of Columbia; a sister, Bettina Ricciotti of Columbia; and four grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

John J. Naylor III, 63, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., died Saturday, June 7, at his home, of cancer.

Services were June 11 in Littleton, Colo. Arrangements are under the direction of Monarch Society Burial and Cremation Service, Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Mr. Naylor was born July 15, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to John Joseph Naylor II and Jessie Warren Naylor.

He married Jone Craig. They lived in Denison, Iowa, and Columbia and were later divorced. He married Sandra Horrocks on Feb. 1, 2003, and she survives.

He attended Tarkio College. He moved to the Denver area in 1976. He was a member of the Sound of the Rockies Barbershop Chorus.

Survivors also include two children, Erin Naylor LaFond of Harrisburg, and John Naylor IV of Overland Park, Kan.; his mother Jessie Naylor of Irwin, Penn.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Corin Naylor, and his father.

Terry Mack Sapp, 45, of Columbia died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at University Hospital.

Mr. Sapp was born April 5, 1957, in Columbia to Arthur Lee Sapp and Frances Dean Jackson Sapp.

He married Sarah Bernhardt on Nov. 21, 1987, in Columbia. He was a Marine Corps veteran and a plumber.

Survivors include his mother, Frances Dean Crosswhite of Columbia; three sons, Shelton Sapp and William Sapp, both of St. Louis, and Shannon Claussen of the state of Nebraska; a daughter, Michelle Kimbley of Fulton; a brother, Gary Sapp of Columbia; and a sister, Linda Kay Ardrey of Columbia.

His father and a brother, Donald Lee Sapp, preceded him in death.

Bill Green, 62, of Olds, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, with the Rev. Jeff Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery near Olds. Visitation will be at noon and from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Green was born June 22, 1940, in Higginsville to John W. and Esther Kresse Green. He graduated in 1959 from Higginsville High School.

He lived in Columbia for several years.

He married Bonnie Hawkins-Canby on July 9, 1983, in Sioux City, Iowa, and she survives.

Mr. Green was an electrician for more than 40 years, working as an apprentice and journeyman before becoming a master electrician.

Survivors also include three daughters, Tammy Green and Kelly Green, both of Columbia, and Rochelle Fulcher of Prairie Du Chien, Wis.; two sons, Rob Canby of Mt. Pleasant and Rich Canby of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Harold Green of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Allen Green; and one sister, Letty Richardson.

Cletus Vincent Hentges, 81, of Columbia died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at University Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 16, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

Mr. Hentges was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Jefferson City to Henry and Josephine Hentges. On May 11, 1943, he married Mary Kaiser in St. Martins, and she preceded him in death.

He was a retired administrative data processor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a veteran of the Army’s 13th Armored Division in World War II.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the National Federation of the Blind, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge and 3 Dollar Golf Club.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Hentges and Scott Hentges, both of Columbia; a daughter, Kathe Cantrell of Norman, Okla.; two brothers, Clarence Hentges of the state of California and Louis Hentges of St. Martins; a sister, Mary Brondel of St. Martins and six grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Pat Hentges.

Mary Drane Rees, 97, of Columbia, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at The Bluffs in Columbia.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St., with the Rev. John Baker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rees was born Nov. 6, 1905, in Boone County to Joseph and Carrie Effie Little Drane.

She married Samuel Rees on July 9, 1933, in Mexico, Mo., and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Pi Delta Nu, Pi Mu Epsilon, Sigma Xi, and Sigma Delta Epsilon. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a master’s degree in 1930. She taught Chemistry at Cottey College, William Woods and the University of Missouri. She retired in 1983. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Columbia.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jo Chapman of Fredonia, Kan., and Janie Rees-Miller of Marietta, Ohio; a brother, Edgar Drane of Ashland; one grandchild; and two great -grandchildren.

Minnie Louise Ashlock, 95, of Blue Springs, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Blue Springs.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Bob Lively officiating. Burial will be in Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ashlock born June 10, 1908, in Columbia to August H. and Freida Hesse Klemme.

She married Norman Ward Ashlock on March 24, 1939, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1993.

She attended Mary Woods Cosmetology and Beauty School in Jefferson City and was employed by various retail businesses in Columbia.

She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church for 40 years. She had been the Sunday School secretary. While living in Millersburg she attended Millersburg Baptist Church, and most recently she attended First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit.

Survivors include a son, Tim Ashlock of Arnold, Calif.; a daughter, Carol Chamberlin of Lake Lotawana; a brother, Fritz Klemme of Hartsburg; and six grandchildren.

Four brothers and three sisters all also preceded her in death.

Douglas Gene Aust, 41, of Boonville died June 23, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Aust was born Oct. 18, 1961, in Columbia to James Gail and Rosalee "Penny" Jeffries Aust.

Survivors include a brother, Danny G. Aust of Columbia.

His sister, Debra Dority, preceded him in death.

Frances Linhart, 89, of Columbia died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at South Hampton Place in Columbia.

Mrs. Linhart was born March 22, 1914, in Sullivan County to Hiram Haley and Ruby Ann Steele Grisamer. On Sept. 24, 1930, she married James Allen Linhart in Sullivan County, and he preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Redemptorist Girls School in Kansas City and worked 19 years with the University of Missouri before retiring in 1984. She was a volunteer at Columbia Regional Hospital for 18 years.

Survivors include four sons, Jerry Linhart of Fayette, Norbert Linhart of Olathe, Kan., Melvin Linhart of Boonville and David Linhart of Leon, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Keith Linhart; a daughter, Shirley Oncken; two brothers; a half-brother; and half-sister preceded her in death.
