Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Harold Connor, 52 years of age departed life on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at The Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. due to pulmonary failure. Mr. Connor resided in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Mr. Connor was born March 29, 1950, in Columbia, Missouri. He graduated from David H. Hickman High School in 1968. In 1974, he received a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

At the age of 16, Harold was baptized at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, Missouri. He accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. Although he never joined Ebenezer A.M.E. church, he attended the 7:45 morning services every Sunday morning until his health began to fail him for approximately 10 years. Harold was saved and he kept his promise to God to live a righteous life. There is no doubt that God’s Kingdom is Harold’s final resting place.

Mr. Connor’s career spanned 33 years with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). At the time of his death, he served as Deputy Director, Price Support Division (PSD) of the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA). The Price Support Division is responsible for loan programs for wheat, feed grains, soybeans, oilseeds, rice and cotton.

Before coming to FSA, Mr. Connor served in a number of positions with Agriculture such as: Branch Chief,
Automation Branch, CGRD, from 1994 to 1995; Acting Deputy Director, Midwest Area 1993-1994; Branch
Chief, Price Support and Environmental Branch, National Appeals Division 1991-1993; Agriculture Program
Specialist, Price Support Branch, CGRD 1 985-1 991; Agriculture Program Specialist, Production Adjustment
Branch, CGRD 1983-1985; County Executive Director, St. Louis Countyç Missouri ASCS office 1975-1983;
County Program Operations Trainee, Missouri State ASCS office 1974-1975; Administrative Assistant,
Missouri State ASCS office 1971-1974.

In 1991, he was the recipient of the ASCS Administrator’s Award for Services to Agriculture, the agency’s highest honor. Mr. Connor was the recipient of the 1983 the Farmers Friend Award from the St. Louis County Farm Bureau. He also received the Certificate of Merit in 1989.

He served as Treasurer of The Caucus, an employee organization of the Farm Service Agency from 1992 to the present.

Harold was an honorable and humble man. He lived his life according to the word of God. He possessed a gentle soul. His actions spoke louder than what any words could ever say. He was•kind, patient and steadfast. Harold showed compassion for others. He never put himself first as he always thought of others needs. A brave army of men could never amass his undying courage. He was a man of character. He conducted himself with pride and dignity at all times. He was faithful to the very end. I (Alfrieda) did all I could do for “l-Iaroldi” to help sustain him a quality life. He received the best medical care imaginable. Yet, neither I nor his physicians could perform the miracle that only Haroldi’s Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ could do. I am confident that God will personally tell him, “Well done; Well done my good and faithful servant!!!”

Harold met Alfrieda in January 1985 at the Department of Agriculture and they were united in marriage on April 30, 1988. They divorced on May 25, 1994. However, Harold and Alfrieda remained the very best of friends. Harold continued to participate in all the Myers family activities’until the•time of his death. We loved him dearly.

Mr. Connor was truly loved. He leaves to mourn an Eastcoast and Midwest family. His Eastcoast family consists of a devoted ex-wife, Alfrieda Scott and friend, Retired Major Reginald Scott of Las Vegas, NV; mother-in-law, Mary Myers of Gambrills, MD; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Myers of Chantilly, VA, Helen Banks of Annapolis, MD and Teresa Myers of Florence, SC; three brothers-in-law, Coolidge Myers, Jr. of Washington, D.C., Robert Myers of Glen Burnie, MD and Charles Banks of Annapolis, MD; three nieces, Darlasha Roundtree, Kimberly Keith and MiJoy Holmes; and three nephews, Auri Hughes, Kingsley McClain and Kevin Roundtree; one great-niece, Kailyn Roundtree. He was loved and highly respected by a host of aunts and uncles in South Carolina and Pennsylvania.

His Midwest family consists of his mother, Ora Lee Connor Hannibal; two brothers, Donald Connor and
James Hannibal; one sister, Carol Hannibal; two sisters-in-law, Linda Connor and Debbie Hannibal; two

Frederick C. Robbins, 86, of Cleveland, Ohio died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at his home.

Frederick Robbins, a Hickman High School and University of Missouri-Columbia graduate whose polio research earned him a Nobel Prize, died yesterday in Cleveland at the age of 86.

Robbins
"Arguably, he might be the most distinguished graduate that we’ve had from Missouri," said Hugh Stephenson, a former MU School of Medicine professor who served on the University of Missouri Board of Curators.
In 1954, Robbins was a professor at Case Western Reserve University when he and two Harvard researchers received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The three discovered a way to grow the poliovirus in a test tube, an advancement that helped lead to finding a cure for the disease.

Robbins was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Auburn, Ala. Sometime later, he moved to Columbia where his parents, William and Christian Robbins, were botany professors at MU. William Robbins also had stints as dean of the MU Graduate School and once served as MU’s president.

Frederick Robbins graduated from Hickman in 1932. He earned an associate’s degree from MU in 1936 and received a two-year medical degree from there in 1938. He earned a medical degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1940.

He served in Italy and North Africa with the Army medical corps during World War II and received the Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. He returned to Boston to complete his medical training. He was at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 1949 when he and the two other researchers made their prize-winning discovery.

In 1952, Robbins went to Case Western in Cleveland. After winning the Nobel, much of his work remained focused on children and diseases. In the late 1980s, Robbins helped establish the Case Western Reserve University medical school’s collaboration with the government of Uganda and Makerere University for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis research.

"He was a person who had very much an international perspective on the world, and of course his work very much had international implications," said Linda Headrick, senior associate dean for education and faculty development at the MU School of Medicine and a former faculty member at Case Western.

Robbins is survived by wife, Alice Northrop Robbins, their daughters Alice Robbins of Northfield, Minn., and Louise Robbins of Ithaca, N.Y., and his brothers, Daniel Robbins of Rochester, N.Y., and William Clinton Robbins of Grand Island, Fla.

Accident takes life of Stephens student

Melissa Howland believed in life so much so that she imitated death during a spring protest to warn of war’s deadly effects.

Joined by other local opponents of the Iraq war, she dropped to the ground that day in March to simulate victims of bombing. Around her neck hung a sign that read "PEACE."

A head-on accident at 4:40 p.m. yesterday ended the life of Howland, a 2003 graduate of Hickman High and a freshman at Stephens College.

She was 18.

The state highway patrol said Howland was driving west into Columbia on Route WW when her Ford Ranger pickup crossed the centerline and struck a Chevy ¾-ton pickup heading east.

The driver of the other pickup, 27-year-old Stephen Cornelison of Columbia, was listed in good condition this morning at University Hospital. A trooper estimated that both pickups were driving 45 mph.

Howland was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. She was the 994th person to die on Missouri roads this year.

In June, Howland graduated from Hickman High School.

She began taking English courses in August at Stephens College, where she received a presidential scholarship for academic achievement and a leadership award for extracurricular activities and community service.

Teen dies, passenger hurt in wreck

By the Tribune’s staff
Published Sunday, November 16, 2003

A Columbia teenager died early yesterday after the car he was driving left a rural highway near Midway, struck a driveway and overturned, ejecting the driver and a passenger.

Jared Shedd, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:30 a.m. wreck, on Route UU, about three-tenths mile south of Van Horn Tavern Road, said a dispatcher for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who was reading from a trooper’s radio report.

The passenger, Jordan Wood, 18, of Columbia, was taken to University Hospital, where a spokeswoman said yesterday that he was in good condition.

Debbie Wood said her son would be fine, though he suffered a broken right femur and a broken hip.

"My understanding is they just went off the road," she said. "I don’t think there is much of a shoulder there."

Shedd, the son of Mark and Doris Shedd of Columbia, was driving a 1998 Pontiac Firebird, the patrol said. Neither Shedd nor Wood wore a seatbelt.

Assistant Chief Ken Hines of the Boone County Fire Protection District said in a news release that firefighters dispatched to the wreck found one of the car’s occupants lying in the roadway and the other person in the wreckage.

Shedd was a senior and an honor roll student at Hickman High School.

Friends remembered Shedd’s fun-loving nature and talent for playing the drums and guitar. Shedd and Hickman student Taylor Trogdon were part of a rock band called "Something Like This."

"We played at Jordan’s birthday party last Friday," Trogdon said. "That was the last time, although we didn’t know it."

Hickman student Sean Dwyer described Shedd as his best friend. They worked together at a McDonald’s restaurant at Columbia Mall.

"He was a great guy," Dwyer said. "He loved everybody and was nice to everyone ... He meant a lot to a lot of people."

Jessica Crews said he tutored children at Cedar Ridge Elementary School and wanted to study lasers after graduation.
