Hickman graduate of 1951, was valedictorian and student body president there, if I remember right.  Went to Mississippi College, MU-Columbia, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Harvard University, Oxford University.  Have three doctorates, earned and honorary; have written five books and a hundred articles; give lots of speeches around the country; was a visiting fellow at Cambridge University in England.  Was president of William Jewell College for many years, am now vice president of Health Midwest.  Married to Suzanne, have a son who teaches at Georgia Tech and another who is an actor/businessman in Japan.  We travel abroad a lot, own a little traditional cottage in Ireland.  Life is good.
LaVerne Hartley & Jim Lee, deceased May 3, 2014

Jim and LaVerne Hartley (both class of 1951) lived in Columbia for four more years after Hickman graduation.  LaVerne graduated from Christian College in 1953 and worked at the Telephone Co as a Secretary.  I worked at the Daniel Boone Hotel and later at Hunt's Drug Store.  Graduated from U. of Missouri June 6, 1955 and Commissioned a 2/Lt. in USAF.  LaVerne and I were married at Calvary Baptist Church on June 18, 1955.  Went into Service August 1955 for a six week orientation in San Antonio TX, Navigation Training at Ellington Field, Houston TX until Feb 1957.  Navigator on KC-97 Tankers at Lincoln AFB NB (Feb 1957 Feb 1962) then at Harmon AFB Newfoundland Feb 62 to Aug 64.  Reported to Iowa State University, Ames IA as a Captain and Air Force ROTC Instructor 1964-68.  Where I also completed my Masters of Science in Educational Administration (1968) by taking one course per quarter and in summer school.  LaVerne and our three kids stayed in Ames while I was Navigating on C-130's (over 800 Combat flying hours) in Southeast Asia, Dec 1968-Dec 1969.  I returned to Ames IA as an AFIT student and completed my PhD in Educational Administration and graduated in 1972.  I served as Professor of Aerospace Studies at Coe College in Cedar Rapids Iowa 1972-76.  I was promoted to Full Colonel and became The Deputy Commandant for Training at The Defense Information School, Fort Benjamin Harrison, in for four years. (1976-1980).  In 1980 LaVerne and our four kids (Steve Lee came along when LaVerne was almost 40) moved off of Ft. Harrison into our present home at 8323 Scarsdale Dr., Indianapolis IN 46256, while I served a one year tour as Director of Public Affairs for The Air Force Reserve Headquarters at Warner Robins AFB GA. I retired on 1 Nov 1981 and returned to Indy and was an Assistant Principal for two years and taught High School History for 13 and 1/2 more year before retiring for good. We have made all of the Class of 51 Reunions (except the First one in 1956) and look forward to the 55th in 2006.

Note from fellow Kewpie, JoAnne Barnes-Shaw, Class of 1951
I have this photo from Benton, not sure of the year though. I believe from my calculations that it was either 1941 or 1942. It should have been 3rd grade I believe. I have names of some, but its been a very long time so can't remember all. Orin Murray is fourth from left and I am the little gal on the far right. Ed Elliott is on far left. We had our Hickman 50th reunion in 2001 and it was great.
