The Hickman High School Class of 1953 held its 50-year reunion last weekend with 104 classmates attending out of a graduating class of 204. The reminiscing started with a picnic Friday evening at Hulen Lake, the same site as their senior picnic half a century ago - then way out in the country. Saturday morning the former classmates toured their alma mater, after which a few broke away and headed for Booche’s for lunch, a place strictly off-limits to women back in the ’50s. Saturday evening was the main event - dinner at the Ramada Inn - with things finishing up there Sunday morning with breakfast. Dale Fenton and Nancy Woods Badger served as co-chairs for a hard-working committee composed of A.T. Dorsey, Leslie Flynn Garrett, Sylvia Guffin Noel, Bob Dinwiddie, Mary Ruth Pace Pauley, Laura Lee Roberson Ellifrit, Dolores Poff Morris, Margaret Anna Caldwell Johnson and Loretta Stull Hartley. There were lotsa laughs and a few tears at the Saturday dinner watching the video of the good old school days compiled by Sylvia Noel, Nancy Badger and Don Singleton, which included shots of some of the graduates’ parents in the first Hickman graduating class of 1928. Special recognition was given "mother hen" Betty Ruth Palmer, who has kept the class in touch with each other all these years, in the form of a tree to be placed in the school’s new atrium. The class is also giving a group gift of 10 benches, also for the atrium, which will feature a centerpiece of a bronze Kewpie sculpted by Sabra Tull Meyer. Four former teachers - Mary Holland Schmidtlein, A.J. McRoberts, David Schneider and Bo Edwards - attended to socialize and, perhaps, to keep an eye on their former students. One couple also celebrated their 50th anniversary Saturday night. Grad Shirley Cleveland Shadrick and husband Lloyd, Class of ’52, of Kansas City gave themselves a hug and a hog - i.e. Harley-Davidson. As the result of past reunions, two couples have married - Loretta and Don Hartley and Sylvia and the late Dick Noel. We’ll probably have to wait until the next reunion to find out if Cupid’s arrows hit any Kewpies during this golden one.
