Della Marie Lumb, 86, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Columbia.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Revs. Michael Keith and Mickey Havener officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lumb was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Glasco, Mont., to Leonard and Dedie Harmon Leach.

She married Oscar Lumb on Sept. 29, 1934, in Huntsville, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of Wilkes Boulevard Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and the Cancer Auxiliary. She was a 60-year member of the Knu So So Club.

Survivors include three sons, John Leonard Lumb of Ava, Kenneth William Lumb of Centralia and Ronald Eugene Lumb of St. Joseph; one sister, Thelma Debo of Devil’s Elbows; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Donald William Fancher, 65, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at his home.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Broadway Christian Church with the Rev. Rick Frost officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until services Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Fancher was born Sept. 10, 1935, in St. Louis to John Preston and Vivian von Gremp Fancher.

He married Sally Houdersheldt on Aug. 4, 1956, in Columbia, and she survives.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in education administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a math and science teacher at Sturgeon R-V High School from 1957-59. He was principal at Sturgeon R-V High School from 1959-62. He served as MU Extension coordinator, director and assistant dean from 1962-75, associate vice provost from 1979-94, interim vice provost from 1994-96 and was appointed vice provost from 1996-99. He retired from MU in 1999 after 37 years.

He was a member of the Missouri Association of Adult Continuing and Community Education, receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1991 and the Achievement Award in 1999. He also was a member of the University Continuing Education Association and of Epsilon Sigma Phi–Altha Tau Chapter. In 1990, he received the State Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of Broadway Christian Church.

Survivors also include his mother, Vivian Fancher Humphrey of Overland Park, Kan.; four sons, Preston Fancher of Creve Coeur, Paul Fancher of Shawnee, Kan., Philip Fancher of Columbia and Patrick Fancher of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a daughter, Abby Fancher of Great Bend, Kan.; a brother; two sisters; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Walter Hart Jr., 81, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Columbia Regional Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Parker Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hart was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Floris, Iowa, to Walter and Corda Ethyl Heady Hart Sr.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the VFW Post No. 280. He was also a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a linotype operator.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Griggs and Deborah Hughes, both of Columbia; a son, Michael Hart of Overland Park, Kan.; two brothers, Garold Hart and Kenneth Hart, both of Dunedin, Fla.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Jo Anne Berg, 64, of Columbia died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at University Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Alive in Christ Lutheran Church with the Revs. Kenneth Gerike and Brian Thieme officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Berg was born Jan. 14, 1936, in Lidgerwood, N.D., to Vlady and Clara Wall Hajny.

On Oct. 8, 1956, she married John Berg in Barney, N.D., and he survives.

She was a member of Alive in Christ Lutheran Church. She and her family moved to Columbia in 1968.

Other survivors include three sons, David Berg and Daniel Berg, both of St. Louis, and Paul Berg of Columbia; a daughter, Cheryl Mayer of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Claribel Lueck of Underwood, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Abbot.

Otis Woodrow Harrison, 81, of Columbia died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Boone Hospital Center.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. John Foley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Harrison was born March 10, 1919, in Auxvasse to William Ewing Harrison and Ila May Miller Harrison. He married Melba Elizabeth Craghead on July 6, 1940, in St. Charles, and she survives.

He served in the Army during World War II from 1943-46. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and VFW Post No. 280.

Survivors also include a son, James Otis Harrison of Columbia; a brother, Albert Harrison of Lee’s Summit; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

William Jerome "Jerry" Loethen, 71, of Columbia died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. David Viet officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Jefferson City. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Memorial Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Loethen was born Oct. 5, 1929, in Jefferson City to George Edward and Della Alice Patton Loethen.

He married Rosemary Willcoxon on July 20, 1957, in Jefferson City, and she survives.

He graduated with honors from Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant during the Korean War.

Mr. Loethen worked for State Farm Insurance Co. for 34 years as superintendent of data processing.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Data Processing Management Association.

Survivors include a son, George Loethen of Columbia; seven daughters, Mary Sparks of Greenville, S.C., Jean Payne of Lilburn, Ga., Patty Stretz of Boonville, Janet Newell of Jacksonville, Fla., Nancy Cain and Amy Ryan, both of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Ellen Elwood of Columbia; a brother, Richard Loethen of Springfield; two sisters, Ila Jean Carlson of Northboro, Iowa, and Rachel Prenger of Jefferson City; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Margaret Hawkins Lloyd, 89, of Columbia died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in Columbia.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Russell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lloyd was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Hallsville to Ona and Sarah Hawkins.

She married Verne Lloyd in Columbia, and he preceded her in death.

She attended business college in Columbia. She was a homemaker and a mortgage clerk for Farm and Home Savings in the 1930s. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Ona "O.D." Hawkins of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Bill Hawkins of Independence; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Zumwalt was born June 30, 1909, in Belton to William and Mae Comstock Zumwalt.

He married Katherine Stutman on April 14, 1936, in Festus, and she preceded him in death. He married Florence Humberg on April 23, 1978, in Columbia, and she preceded him in death.

Mr. Zumwalt was an Army veteran of World War II. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and statistics from the University of Missouri and was employed as the manager of the University Bookstore for 29 years. He was a member of Wilkes Blvd. United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Masons, White Shrine member and an Eastern Star member.

Survivors include a son, George Zumwalt of Maumelle, Ark.; one sister, Marguerite Kelly of Columbia; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his two sisters.

Mr. Mutrux was born March 9, 1925, in Cassville to Harold Alfred Mutrux and Effie Mae Mutrux.

He served in the Army as a medical surgical technician. He attended the University of Missouri, where he majored in agriculture. He worked for Vita Fresh and later for Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, where he was a custodian.

Mr. Mutrux was an ordained elder with the Church of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include six children, Diana Howard, Jennifer Arnold, Carolyn Kemp, Judith Roundy, Ross Mutrux and Susan Sperry; two brothers, J.D. Mutrux and Bob Mutrux; 40 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Orrin J. Lashbrook, 77, of Columbia died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Lashbrook was born March 21, 1923, in Bardolph, Ill., to Orrin Miller and Aleda Ellen Weightman Lashbrook.

He married Jeanne Vandervort on Jan. 27. 1945, in Bloomington, Ill., and she preceded him in death. He later married Dorothy Burchfield on Jan. 1, 1984, in Columbia, and she also preceded him in death.

He attended school in Bardolph, Ill., and Western Illinois State Teachers College, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity. He studied at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., under the V-12 program of the Navy before attending Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he received his commission. He served in the Pacific during World War II as a naval communications officer in Guam. He also attended classes at Harvard University. He later enrolled in Columbia College’s Independent Studies program, where he received his degree.

He moved to Columbia in 1956 and was a charter member of Broadway Christian Church. He worked at State Farm Insurance for 39 years. After retiring in 1985, he moved to Marshfield and was a consultant with American National Property and Casualty Co. in Springfield.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Shearin and Linda Rouse, both of Columbia; a brother, Charles Lashbrook of Danville, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Warren was born Aug. 30, 1926, in Joplin to Archie Lee and Nellie Dall Warren. He married Doris Jean Hogan on June 6, 1948, in Joplin, and she survives.

He served in the Army’s 8th Cavalry during World War II in the Pacific. He graduated from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar; Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.; and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was a pastor in Texas, Arkansas and Missouri for 53 years. He served on the Missouri Baptist Executive and Missouri Baptist Children’s Home boards. He was director of missions for the Little Bonne Femme Baptist Association for 10 years, retiring in 1991.

Other survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Ruth Besan-cenez of Camdenton, Susan Elizabeth Imboden of Johnson City, Tenn., and Martha Carol Lindsay of Gastonia, N.C.; three sons, David Glenn Warren of Kansas City, Stephen Lynn Warren of Camdenton and Timothy Duane Warren of Old Hickory, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy Craven and Frances Roberts, both of Monrovia, Calif.; a brother, Bill Warren of Corona, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Warren and Harold Warren.

Toimi Enoch Kyllonen, 87, of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

Dr. Kyllonen was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Chicago to Andrew and Edla Lammi Kyllonen. He married Frances Aileen Thompson on Dec. 31, 1940, and she survives.

He earned his undergraduate degree in 1935 at Bucknell University in Lewistown, Pa. Searching for work during the Depression, he traveled to New York City, then to Minneapolis, where he worked as a research assistant on the General College Adult Study at the University of Minnesota before accepting a job there as a sociology teacher.

Dr. Kyllonen taught social studies at Stephens College from 1940-45. He completed his doctorate in sociology at the University of Minnesota in 1948, then returned to Columbia to teach in the Sociology Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He retired as an associate professor in December 1975.

He won a Fulbright Fellowship in 1954-55 to pursue sociological research in Finland, his parents’ homeland. His research also took him to the A.B. Chance Co. in Centralia and to the Bemis Bag Co. in St. Louis, where he began developing an experimental lab manual for beginning sociology.

Survivors also include a daughter, Julie Frances Kyllonen Rose of Macomb, Ill.; and two brothers, Erland Kyllonen of Groveland, Calif., and Allen Kyllonen of Weirton, W.Va.

She married James Craigmile on June 4, 1952, in LaCrosse, Wis., and he survives.

She attended the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, where she earned a teaching degree. She did her graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She taught for two years in Belleview, Neb., two years in Lincoln, Neb., and 20 years at Field Elementary in Columbia.

She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was the first female elder. She also was a member of numerous church groups and of the Literacy Action Corp.

Survivors also include four sons, David Craigmile, Stephen Craigmile, Paul Craigmile and Joseph Craigmile, all of Columbia; a sister, Jean McDonnell of LaCrosse, Wis.; two brothers, Richard Larson of Wind Lake, Wis., and William Larson of Racine, Wis.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marjorie Dawes.

She and her husband moved to Columbia in 1941, and lived here until his retirement. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and had held various posts in the United Methodist Women in eastern Missouri.

Fred R. Dudley, 79, of Columbia died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, Mo.

There will be no services. Mr. Dudley donated his body to the Anatomy Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Funeral Service.

Mr. Dudley was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Jefferson City to Russell and Gladys Keuster Dudley. He was formerly married to Imogene Wilson.

He served in the Navy for 19 years during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a 4,500-hour volunteer at Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. He was also a member of VFW Post No. 280 in Columbia, the American Military Society and the Retired Enlisted Association. He moved to Columbia from Moberly in 1967.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie Cole of Mason City, Iowa; a son, Larry Dudley of Littleton, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Clarence Roy "C.R." Masten, 78, of Columbia, formerly of Kirksville, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville with the Rev. Jim Robinson officiating. Burial with military rites is in Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville.

Mr. Masten was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Weaubleau to Clarence Roy and Vena Josephine Brashears Masten.

He married Florence Tindall and she preceded him in death. He later married Betty Noe on March 19, 1950, in Kirksville and she survives.

He graduated from Kirksville High School in 1940. He served in the Navy, where he was a chief aviation pilot.

He had been employed as a grocery store manager for MFA Exchange in Kirksville and later purchased the John Deere dealership in Brookfield. He retired to Columbia after 30 years as a purchasing manager with Missouri Farmer’s Cooperative.

Other survivors include three sons, Jim Masten of Tyler, Texas, Mike Masten of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Steve Masten of Kirksville; a sister, Kathryn Holliday of Hollister; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tom Masten; and a brother, Joe Gene Masten.

Mrs. Caruthers was born March 13, 1906, in Howard County to Andrew "Bud" and Sallie Redman Dodson.

She married Alva Norris Caruthers on July 31, 1927, and he preceded her in death.

She was a lifelong member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church in Howard County as well as an associate member of Midway Locust Grove Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also served as Sunday school secretary. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 383 and served as noble grand and was a Past Noble Grand Club member. She had been an officer for American War Mothers and a member of the Midway Home Boosters Extension Club, UMW of Midway Locust Grove Church.

Mrs. Caruthers had been a dealer for Stanley Home Products for 40 years and had worked at the University of Missouri from 1961-73.

Survivors include three sons, Alva Norris Caruthers Jr. and Earl Caruthers, both of Columbia, and W.A. Caruthers of Hallsville; two daughters, Sondra Reynolds and Marcella Roberts, both of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, a brother and six sisters.

He married Wanda Coffman on April 3, 1962. He later married Marilyn Carter on June 23, 1995, in Columbia, and she survives.

He served in the Army from 1959-1961. He was formerly employed with the city of Columbia, American Press and Kribb’s 63 and was most recently employed with Albert Buick-Honda.

Earl George Ludwigsen, 73, of Poplar Bluff died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Ludwigsen was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Silver Point, Tenn.

He was retired from the Air Force and was also a retired captain with the Columbia Police Department.

Survivors include a son, Michael Henry of Gladstone; a brother, Cleo Zimmerman of Bethany; a sister, Pauline Danner of Bethany; and a grandson.

He was self-employed as a contractor and was involved in the building of the post office, the downtown Ramada Inn, Neff Hall on the MU campus and the Boone County Historical Society Building. He was a member of the Senior Center and the Midway Breakfast Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Dryden of Lake in the Hill, Ill.; three sons, David Holly of Rocheport, Michael Holly of Kirkwood, and Wayne Holly of Mount Clemmons, Mich.; one brother, Girvus Holly of Fulton, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

George Clay Wilson, 92, of St. Louis, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001.

Services were held Saturday, March 10, at the Chapel of Laclede Groves in St. Louis.

Mr. Wilson was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Champaign-Urbana, Ill.

He married Mary Alice Essick and she preceded him in death.

He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1931. He received a master’s degree from Columbia University in New York and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in music from Phillips University in Enid, Okla.

His career as a music educator led him to teaching positions at Emporia State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Missouri-Columbia. While at MU, he developed and directed Marching Mizzou.

Mr. Wilson was appointed vice president of Interlochen Center for the Arts in 1957, and was later named director of the camp.

He received the first Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois in 1977 and was elected to the Missouri Hall of Fame for distinguished service to music education. He was elected president of the American Bandmasters Association in 1965. Upon his retirement from Interlochen in 1979, he was elected honorary trustee of the center.

Survivors include three daughters, Avalyn McGinley, Suzanne Hayworth and Georgene Boyd; three sisters, Catherine Hall, Patricia Lange and Beverly Ann Wilson; one brother, Reid Wilson; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He attended the University of Missouri, and he and his wife were charter members of Broadway Christian Church. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 202; VFW Post No. 280; Disabled American Veterans, Jefferson City Chapter; Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.

Mr. Powell had worked for Deering Architect Co. and later at Riback Pipe and Steel. He retired from Knipp Construction Co. after 23 years of service.

Fred Perkins, 73, of Lake Ozark, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Rodney Albert officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the funeral home.

Mr. Perkins was born April 10, 1927, in Columbia to Lilburn and Bessie Elder Perkins.

He married Mary Lou Ray on Sept. 14, 1946, and she survives.

He was a building contractor in Columbia for 40 years.

Survivors also include a son, Mike Perkins of Columbia; two daughters, Donna Ray of Clovis, Calif., and Carol Hucker of Georgetown, Colo.; three sisters, Dora Jones of Columbia, Hettie Calvert of St. Louis and Carrie Winn of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and four sisters.

D. Louise "Tootie" Hamilton, 81, of Columbia died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mrs. Hamilton was born July 31, 1919, in Boone County to Robert Harrison Hamilton and Alice Douglas Hamilton.

She had been employed as a dispatcher for the Yellow and Checker Taxi companies for 36 years and had also worked as a bookkeeper for Howard’s Garage.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Johnson of Columbia; a sister, Mildred Corbin of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Everett E. Keith, 94, of Columbia died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St., with the Rev. Jim Bryan officiating. There will be a private burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St., and from 10 a.m. to time of services Monday at the church.

Mr. Keith was born Sept. 1, 1906, in Buffalo to William Anderson and Nora Woods Keith.

He married Anna Catherine Blanchard on June 1, 1933, in Humansville, and she preceded him in death.

He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri, where he was a Gregory Scholar from 1933-35. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1957 from Lindenwood College and a doctorate in education in 1998 from the University of Missouri.

Mr. Keith was an elementary school teacher, principal and high school teacher and city superintendent of schools in Buffalo. He was an instructor at the University of Missouri, a state high school supervisor, chief clerk and director of high school supervision for the Missouri Department of Education and assistant secretary and director of public relations for the Missouri State Teachers Association.

He served as the executive secretary of the MSTA from 1941 until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the State Board of Education for eight years and served as its first president.

Mr. Keith was the author of "In Retrospect: A narrative on Missouri Education, 1938-1973." He was a member of the MASA Advisory Committee, AASA, Missouri Academy of Squires, NRTA-AARP Legislative Committee, Phi Delta Kappa, Pi Gammu Mu, Alpha Pi Zeta, Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, Missouri United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club, Honorary Legion of Honor–Order of DeMolay, Executive Committee for the Retired Teacher Association of Missouri and served on the board of directors of the Missouri State Teachers Foundation. He also was past president of the National Association of Secretaries of State Teachers Associations and the Retired Teachers Association of Missouri.

He served as a delegate to the White House Conferences on Education, World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession and the White House Conference on Aging in 1995. He was listed in Who’s Who in America, Leaders in Education, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in American Education and the Blue Book Leaders of the English Speaking World.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Hanely of Falls Church, Va.; a brother, William Keith of Belton; and two grandchildren.

He was a member of the Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association and past president of Sunrise Optimist.

He was the 1997 Volunteer of the Year for Central Missouri Food Bank where he had played Santa Claus since 1994.

He was a supporter of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the Sheriff’s Reserves, providing refreshments to officers each year during the Boone County Fair.

Survivors also include his mother, Hazel Humphreys Williams of Columbia; a son, Troy Matney of Columbia; a daughter, Dawn Kliethermes of Columbia; three brothers, Herman Matney of Hallsville, Julian Matney of Topeka, Kan., and Jerry Matney of St. Louis; four sisters, Shirley Jean Stewart of Treasure Island, Fla., Diana Cagle of Bowling Green, Sheila Cagle of Wichita, Kan., and Laura Cagle of Columbia; and a grandchild.

Fred Warren Coats, 82, of Rocheport died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services were held at 11 a.m. today at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St. Burial is in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Coats was born June 28, 1918, in Boone County to William and Grace Shadrick Coats.

He married Mabel Wayland on June 28, 1939, in Columbia, and she survives.

He lived his entire life in Boone County and attended Warren and Huntsdale schools.

He was a cattle farmer and a general contractor for many years, building homes and commercial properties.

Mr. Coats raised shorthorn cattle for 16 years and Limousine cattle for 17 years. He was a member of the Missouri Limousine Association and received the 2001 Hall of Fame Award.

He was also a member of the North American Limousine Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the First Baptist Church. He was a 50-year member of Carpenters Local No. 1925.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a gun crewman for heavy artillery in Battalion A657 from 1943-46.

Survivors also include two sisters, Bessie Cornelison and Wanda Yeager, both of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bob Coats and Jessie Coats.

Manuel Ignacio Navarro, 72, of Columbia died Friday, May 4, 2001, at his home.

Dr. Navarro was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Granada, Nicaragua, to Atanasio and Luisa Martinez Navarro.

He attended the University of Nicaragua and graduated with a medical degree in 1957. After studying and working in Europe, he completed a fellowship in Neuroradiology at Masonic Hospital in Chicago. In 1969, he joined the medical staff at University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics, where he served as an assistant professor in the School of Medicine and as head of the Department of Radiology until his retirement in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Zeneyda Navarro of Columbia; three sons, Manuel Navarro of Columbia, Henry Navarro of San Francisco, Calif., and Daniel Navarro of Chicago; three sisters, Christina Navarro of San Jose, Costa Rica, Marina Castellon of Naples, Fla., and Isabel Gutierrez of Concord, Calif.; two brothers, Guillermo Navarro of San Jose, Costa Rica, and Atanasio Navarro of Jefferson City; and a grandchild.

His parents preceded him in death.

She lived her entire life in Boone County. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church for 42 years. She worked for several years at MFA Insurance Co. She was the oldest living retiree from MFA.

He owned Smiley’s Cafeteria in Columbia from 1950 to 1965. He was a dormitory food service director at the University of Missouri-Columbia and retired from Audrain Medical Center as food service director in 1980. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Lions Club.

She married Clifford Lionberger on Aug. 29, 1929, in Clayton, and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Wilkes Boulevard Methodist Church and the Thilo Chapter of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeannine Bezler of Columbia; a brother, Leroy Watts of Troy; a sister, Ruth Evans of Troy; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Robert Sherman Jones, 61, of Columbia died of cancer Monday, May 14, 2001, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 903 Bernadette Drive, with Monsignor Michael Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W.

Dr. Jones was born Dec. 20, 1939, in St. Louis to Otey Sherman and Hilda Jenneman Jones.

He married Debbora Dues on Feb. 17, 1968, in Kansas City, and she survives.

He graduated in 1957 from CBC High School in St. Louis, in 1961 from St. Louis University and in 1965 from the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at Western Missouri Mental Health Center in Kansas City.

He was employed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health for 31 years. He was the superintendent of Mid Missouri Mental Health Center in Jefferson City and was a staff psychiatrist at the center until his retirement in 1998. He worked part time for the University of Missouri Department of Psychiatry and Butterfield Youth Services in Marshall.

Dr. Jones was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the American Psychiatric Association and the Central Missouri Hemercallis Society.

Survivors also include a son, Matthew Jones of Columbia; a brother, John Paul Jones of Williamston, Mich.; a sister, Alice Jones Stallings of St. Louis; two half sisters, Marion Jones Coffman of Mountainview, Ark., and Harriet Jones Ward of Hollywood, Fla.; and a half brother, Thomas Jones of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church building fund or Butterfield Youth Services.

Loy J. "Peabub" Elder, 75, of Columbia died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Boone Retirement Center.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at the funeral home.

Mr. Elder was born June 3, 1925, in Howard County to Earl and Ida Mae Gilmore Elder. On Aug. 14, 1971, he married Anna Rose Kemper in Hallsville, and she survives.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Other survivors include two sons, Steve Elder of Ashland and Ron Elder of St. Louis; a daughter, Judith Diane Odom of Hannibal; two sisters, Georgia Andrews and Bessie Baker, both of Columbia; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Ralph Dingman, 90, of Columbia died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with the Rev. B.J. Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Dingman was born Oct. 6, 1910, in Columbia to Edward Earl and Birdie May "Macie" Jones Dingman. He married Opal Pettit on June 28, 1933, in Sedalia, and she survives. He owned and operated the Eat-Mor Café from 1950-71. From 1962-75, he was a partner of Dingman and Perkins Builders.

Survivors also include a daughter, Beverly Perkins of Columbia; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents, Willard and Elizabeth "Birdie" Goslin; a brother, J.H. Dingman; and a sister, Mary Evelyn Powell.

Charles William Libbee, 84, of Columbia died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Williamsburg in Columbia. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth Street in Columbia.

Mr. Libbee was born July 27, 1916, to George and Una Bowles Libbee in Philadelphia, Mo. He married Kathryn Rhea on June 29, 1942, in New London, and she survives.

Mr. Libbee was a graduate of Hannibal High School and a 1940 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity. He retired from the MU agriculture department, where he was the farm supervisor of experimental station development.

Other survivors include four daughters, Ann Hamilton of Greenwood, Ark., Jeanne Libbee and Marion Merry, both of Melbourne, Fla., and Carol Williams of Palmyra; two brothers, Guy Libbee of Springfield and Max Libbee of Adelphi, Md.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Joseph Martin Priesmeyer, 58, of Columbia died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Columbia.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Edwin Cole officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W., with a prayer service at 8:30 p.m.

Mr. Priesmeyer was born April 1, 1943, in St. Louis to Jack and Alice Lademan Priesmeyer Jr.

He married Marydeth Scheppers on Jan. 22, 1966, in Jefferson City, and she survives.

He graduated in 1961 from Chaminade High School in St. Louis. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and psychology in 1965 from St. Louis University. He received a master’s degree in education in 1980 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He served in the Air Force from 1965-70, earning the rank of captain. He was the sales manager for N.H. Scheppers Distributing Co. from 1970-79 and was the program director of the Family Counseling Center from 1979-81. He retired as the operations manager for Missouri Book Services in 1988.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Personnel Advisory Board and served as president and member of the Broadway Swim Club board of directors. He also was a former president of the Country Club of Missouri.

Survivors also include three sons, Joseph Priesmeyer Jr., Scott Priesmeyer and Shawn Priesmeyer, all of Columbia; three brothers, Jack Priesmeyer III and Tom Priesmeyer, both of St. Louis, and Scott Priesmeyer of Denver; and two sisters, Susie Sheehan of Raymore and Sally Bowman of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joan Mumma Hills, 76, of Brookings, Ore., formerly of Columbia, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Hills was born July 19, 1924, to Robert and Eunice Mumma in Janesville, Wis.

She married Richard L. Hills in August 1949 in Iowa, and he survives.

She graduated from Denfeld High School and received a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Iowa. She was a band director and music teacher in the Columbia Public Schools for 30 years. She developed the elementary band program and the honors band program. She was a member of the PTA, Quota Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Columbia Bridge Club and many local and state teachers’ associations. She was Teacher of the Year in 1976 and retired from Columbia Public Schools in 1986.

Survivors also include a son, Christopher Hills of Evanston, Ill.; two daughters: Kathy Niemann of Reno, Nev., and Susie Hills of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Bill Mumma.
