Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Cal State professor, poet remembered fondly

November 29, 2000 from the San Bernardino, California, SUN
by MATT BENDER

SAN BERNARDINO Students, colleagues and friends will remember the life of nationally-recognized poet and Cal State San Bernardino professor Larry Kramer at a gathering at the university today.

Kramer died Nov. 18 from complications of multiple myeloma. He was 61.

Friends remembered him as a devoted teacher and mentor, as well as an outstanding poet.

"He dedicated his life to poetry," his widow, Patricia Curran, said. He wrote poetry even in his last days, she added.

Kramer taught at the university for 32 years. During that time, he was a mentor to many students who are now published poets and writers, fellow English professor Juan Delgado said.

"He's been able to create a community of writers in this area," Delgado said.

Delgado said Kramer had an unorthodox teaching style.

"He was an incredible storyteller," he said.

At times, it wasn't clear where the story was heading, or why it was relevant, Delgado said.

"But, before you'd know it, he was making a profound point," Delgado said.

He also spent hours working one-on-one with his students to develop them as writers.

"He was incredibly generous with his time," Delgado said.

Colleagues also remembered him as equally dedicated to his poetry.

"I remember him saying many years ago that he didn't see the point in being a poet if he couldn't be a very good one," said fellow English professor Peter Schroeder, a colleague for 32 years.

Curran said he was a devoted scholar of the great poets of the past, particularly Walt Whitman and William Butler Yeats.

In his own poetry collected in the books "Strong Winds Below the Canyons" and "Brilliant Windows" he challenged readers "to understand the roots of emotion and the tensions of life within all of us," Curran said.

He also was known for his friendly, down-to-earth manner, his loud, distinctive laugh, and his fascination with thrift stores.

"He loved to accumulate weird stuff," Schroeder said. "He liked to go to thrift stores and find strange objects."

Curran said he drew inspiration from the curiosities he found at thrift stores.

"He found a whole world of fascination in things other people would throw out," she said.

Curran said she is preparing a third manuscript for publication. She said she will also prepare an edition of his collected works.
