Those we love truly never die
Though year by year the sad memorial wreath--
A ring and flowers, types of life and death--
Are laid upon their graves.
Well blessed is she who has a dear one dead
A friend she has whose face will never change,
A dear communion that will not grow strange.
The anchor of a life is death.
There is no death, nor change, nor any ending.
Only a journey, and so many go
That we who stay at length discern the blending
Of the two roads, two breaths, two lives, and so
Come to the high and quiet knowledge that the dead
Are but ourselves, made beautiful instead.

Dalene Summers Beaver passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007, in Boulder, Colorado.

Born May 2, 1936, in Jefferson City, Missouri, Dalene Beaver proved true the saying that "good things come in small packages." Dalene was a tiny 2 lbs when she entered the world and she was a "very good package." From the beginning, she possessed a strong determination to thrive and to grow. And grow she did into a beautiful young lady, who, while photographed in the fashionalbe hats of the 1940's, admitted she never liked wearing them.

She was a spirited teen who grew into the Central College Homecoming Queen. She has always had a love of music and got her start in a singing Christmas tree where she was quite literally the star. She has been a member in several church choirs, most recently at First Presbyterian Church and the Jubilated Sacred Singers. Dalene continued to sing, play the piano, the harp and even an occasional kazoo. She was also gifted in teaching, whether it be church youth groups or the twenty-plus years that she taught speech, debate and drama in the public schools.

Dalene was a memeber of the East Boulder Optimist Club, and President of the Boulder Bach Festival. She loved to travel, to shop, to host, and more than anything else to be with people --most importantly her family. She was a very giving soul, with impeccable taste. She showered her family and friends with love throughout her lifetime.

Dalene is irreplaceable and will be missed, but she can do what she loves for eternity, singing with the heavenly hosts and we look forward to seeing her again.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Orion Beaver; two daughters, Leanne Jenkins and Patrice Werkmeister, and her six grandchildren: Caleb, Kendall, Kaden, and Kennedy Werkmeister and Jacob and Juliana Jenkins.

In lieu of flowers; charitable donation to Jubilate Sacred Singers, the First Presbyterian Church Music Department, YoungLife or the Boulder Bach Festival can be sent in care of Crist Mortuary at 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301.

Clay C. Cooper Jr., 89, longtime former coach and athletics administrator at the University of Missouri-Columbia, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Boone Hospital.

A celebration of Mr. Cooper’s life will be conducted in the fall, with the time, date and location to be announced later.

Mr. Cooper, one of six children, was born on Aug. 23, 1917 in Corydon, Ky., to Clay C. Cooper Sr. and Martha "Mattie" Randolph Cooper. In 1932, Mr. Cooper and his family moved to Columbia, where his parents operated a boarding house on Missouri Avenue adjacent to the university’s campus. Mr. Cooper graduated from Hickman High School in 1936 and led the 1935 Kewpie team to an undefeated season in football and the Missouri state high school basketball championship in 1936. One of Mr. Cooper’s football teammates and friends was Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart.

Mr. Cooper entered MU in 1936 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1940. While at the university, Mr. Cooper earned nine athletic letters in three sports: football, basketball and track. During Mr. Cooper’s senior year at the university, the football team was the Big 6 Conference champion and played in the 1940 Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech. The basketball team also won the Big 6 Conference championship, as did the indoor track team.

Mr. Cooper married the former Frances Shepard on Aug. 30, 1941 in Columbia. The ceremony was conducted at the Delta Gamma chapter house on the university’s campus. After the marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Cooper established a home in Joplin, where Mr. Cooper had accepted a coaching and teaching position at Joplin High School. He also coached at Joplin Junior College, now Missouri Southern University. While coaching at Joplin Junior College, one of Mr. Cooper’s basketball athletes was the late Dennis Weaver, who later gained notoriety as an actor in the television series "Gunsmoke" and "McCloud."

Mr. Cooper was a combat veteran of World War II, serving as the commanding officer of Motor Torpedo Boat (PT) 324 in the Pacific Theater, primarily in the Philippine Islands. After the war, Mr. Cooper was assigned to a minesweeper in the South China Sea. Mr. Cooper attained the rank of lieutenant before being released from active duty at the Alameda Naval Air Station in 1946.

Upon leaving the service, Mr. Cooper returned to Columbia and entered graduate school. He earned a Master’s of Education degree in 1947 and was hired by Athletics Director and Head Football Coach Don Faurot to be an assistant coach in both football and basketball. In 1957, then Head Football Coach Frank Broyles assigned Mr. Cooper the additional duty of recruiting coordinator. Mr. Cooper relinquished his basketball coaching duties in 1959 to concentrate on football. Mr. Cooper remained as an assistant football coach until 1975, at which time he moved to an administrative role, primarily in the recruiting area. He retired in 1985 after serving in the Athletics Department for a total of 38 years. During his tenure at the university, Mr. Cooper was on the staffs of the following head coaches: Don Faurot, Frank Broyles, Dan Devine, Al Onofrio and Warren Powers.

Mr. Cooper coached several All-Americans, including Andy Russell, Johnny Roland, Roger Wehrli and John Moseley. He also coached dozens of All-Conference players. During the 1960s, Missouri football enjoyed unparalleled success, appearing in the Orange Bowl twice, Bluebonnett Bowl, Gator Bowl and Sugar Bowl.

Mr. Cooper was an avid outdoorsman and, until his retirement from the university, took pride in leading the football coaching staff on an annual camping and fishing trip to Missouri Ozark float streams. He was also an amateur archaeologist and amassed an impressive collection of Indian relics through searching cultivated fields in Mid-Missouri during the 1960s and 1970s.

After his retirement, Mr. Cooper remained very active, attending university sporting events and social activities. He enjoyed travel, especially visiting his eight children. He met daily with a group of friends over coffee to discuss politics, current events and sports. In retirement, Mr. Cooper became an avid tennis player and competed twice a week up until a short time before his death. He was especially fond of float fishing for trout on the Niangua River near Bennett Springs. In 1991, Mr. Cooper was inducted in the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. In 1999, Mr. Cooper was ranked 20th of the top Columbia athletes of the last century.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Cooper; his eight children, Georgiann Cooper of Brunswick, Maine; Sally Myers and her husband, Tim, of Oxford, Ohio; Julie Ferguson and her husband, Jeff, of Maryville; Christy Konigsberg and her husband, Jan, of Anchorage, Alaska; Shepard Cooper and his wife, Debbie, of Indianapolis; Melissa Cooper and her husband, Richard, of Springfield; Greg Cooper and his wife, Stacy, of Columbia; and Kelly Cooper of Columbia. He is also survived by an older brother, John M. Cooper, of Bloomington, Ind.; a younger sister, Mae Jayne of Boston; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a younger sister, Beulah; an older sister, Carmazelle; and an older brother, Grant.

Mr. Cooper’s passion for life, his unflagging sense of humor and his razor sharp mind will be missed by his many friends. The next time you attend a Missouri football or basketball games, please think of Clay Cooper, a man who dedicated his entire professional life to the university and, most of all, to the student athletes who competed under his caring tutelage. The next time you play with children or grandchildren, also think of Clay, a man who dedicated his personal life to his family, a family who loved him so dearly and will forever miss him.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Clay Cooper Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the University of Missouri Department of Athletics, Mizzou Arena, 1 Championship Drive, Suite 200, Columbia, Mo., 65211-3080.

Ruth Weaver Arbuckle, 93, of Port Republic died July 6, 2007, at Calvert County Nursing Home.

She was born March 31,1914, in Columbia, Miss.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and treasured friend to many people throughout the world. After retiring from prominent careers in dairy science and the ice cream industry in 1987, she and her husband, Dr. Wendell S. Arbuckle, established an endowment to support ice cream research at the University of Missouri. That endowment supports a popular campus-based institution, Buck’s Ice Cream Place, which sells the premium ice cream manufactured in the program. The Arbuckles conducted numerous ice cream ‘‘short courses” for the University of Maryland, and provided methods and formulations for the legendary ‘‘Dairy Sales Room” at the University’s College Park campus. They developed Tiger Stripe, the signature flavor at Buck’s Place, as well as Arbuckle’s Delight for Lee’s Ice Cream Parlors in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

She loved nature and the many birds and creatures that lived around her. In her early 90s, she converted that interest into yet another career, writing children’s books. ‘‘A Chesapeake Bay Year,” an account of a young boy’s introduction to the birds and animals of the region, was published in December 2006, is in its third printing and was recently translated for publication in Japan. The story was drawn from the experiences of her beloved great-grandson, Hector, and was illustrated by her friend, Anne Moore. She was working on a second book at the time of her death. Forever young at heart, she lived a long and beautiful life and died following a very brief stay at Calvert County Nursing Home, the same institution which she had visited for many years to volunteer her services and perform her music program for nursing home residents. She presented what turned out to be her final program with her collaborator and friend, John Riedasel, in late June.

She is survived by a son, J. Gordon Arbuckle of Washington, D.C., and Boulder Colo.; her ‘‘almost daughter,” Margaret Grega of Port Republic; daughter, Wendy Ellen Wood of Columbia; grandsons, J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr. and his wife Elisa Rizo-Arbuckle of Ames, Iowa, Mathew Barton Arbuckle of Boulder, Colo., and Peter Webster Arbuckle of Washington, D.C.; and great-grandson, Hector Gordon Arbuckle of Ames, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989.

Services will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Chestnut Land Trust Inc., P.O. Box 204, Port Republic, MD 20676.

The family will receive visitors from 2 until 3 p.m. on Sunday at Weng Funeral Chapel in Jasper.

Fred was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Columbia to Henry H. and Nancy Krusekopf. He graduated from Hickman High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service to his country, he attended the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and received the degree of doctor of veterinary medicine. After a short internship in Wynot, Neb., Dr. Krusekopf moved to Jasper, where he continued practicing veterinary medicine for 56 years.

If serving the Jasper rural community with veterinary services was not enough, Dr. Krusekopf had such a love for this area that he quickly involved himself with civic and city programs for the betterment of all in the area.

Dr. Krusekopf became the head of the Jasper Youth Baseball Program and served on various local, county and state committees. Fred was successful in uniting the rural populace with the town populace by originating "Dairy Days." This eventful celebration is known today as Jasper Appreciation Days.

With his lifelong friend, Fred Hern, they initiated the All School Reunion in Jasper, which is still celebrated. They both knew the importance of keeping in touch with friends and loved ones. Although Dr. Krusekopf was not a graduate of Jasper, he was awarded honorary membership to the graduating class of 1972.

Dr. Krusekopf was an avid Boy Scout as a youth and continued scouting by sponsoring Boy Scout Troop No. 88. He was instrumental in helping many young men achieve their goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. In 1971, after 35 years of service as a scout leader, Fred was honored by the Mo-Kan Boy Scout Council with the "Golden Sun Award." This is one of the most prestigious awards a scoutmaster can ever achieve.

During his commitment to community betterment, Dr. Krusekopf was a very influential icon who helped the city of Jasper receive the 5-Star Community Betterment Award.

He also worked diligently in conjunction with federal programs to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. For all these and many other achievements, Dr. Krusekopf was honored as "Man of the Year" in 1981 and 1983.

In 1995, Dr. Krusekopf was honored by the Missouri House of Representatives and Missouri Senate with a personal Declaration of Achievement. This public recognition was for his 14 years of service as mayor of Jasper, six years of service as city councilman, president of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce, commander of American Legion Post 612, active member of the VFW and his many hours of service on local, state and federal committees.

He was active in Jasper United Methodist Church and was currently serving as chairman of the administrative board.
