Patricia Sue Scott, 60, of Columbia passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at her home.

Pattie Sue was born Aug. 7, 1945, in Florissant to Edgar Victor and Laura Fittje Andrews.

She was a 1963 graduate of Hickman High School. She was previously married to Gary Bratton of Hallsville and Jeff Scott of Ashland, and they survive. Pat was employed with MFA Oil and served as city clerk in Columbia. She was also employed at Callaway Bank in Fulton, where she was active with the Gold Leaf Club. She was a cancer survivor and continued to participate and serve on the Relay for Life board. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbia.

Survivors include her mother of Columbia; two sons, Anthony "Tony" Bratton and his wife, Rachel, of Hartsburg and Craig Bratton of Centralia; a daughter, Victoria King and her husband, Brent, of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Samara Wellman-Bratton, Hannah Bratton and Evelyn King.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Howard K. Chrisman, 75, of Hamilton, Ill., formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Veterans Medical Center in Phoenix.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Ill., with visitation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton. Entombment will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosa Lynn Rupard, 73, of Columbia passed away Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at her home.

Rosa was born Aug. 23, 1932, in Boone County to Thomas L. Rice and Dora McCallister Rice.

She married John C. Rupard on June 5, 1950, in Columbia, and he preceded her in death Dec. 17, 2002.

Rosa was a member of Prairie Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Dwayne Rupard and John C. Rupard Jr., both of Columbia, and Mark Kevin Rupard of Normal, Ill.; three daughters, Linda Stone of Columbia, Teresa Vance of Tucson, Ariz., and Elaine Stratton of Columbia; one sister, Lorraine Basinger of Morrison; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Evelyn L. Nienaber, 74, of Columbia died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at her home.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 St. Charles Road. Services, conducted by the Rev. John Fussner, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Nilson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Nienaber was born Dec. 23, 1931, in McBaine to Joseph Murray and Stella Vaughan Murray.

She married Richard Nienaber on Feb. 20, 1951, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 2001.

She was a 1950 graduate of Hickman High School.

Survivors include two brothers, Otsie Murray and Marshall Murray, both of Columbia; a sister, Idella Ward of Eldon; several nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and -nephews.

Mr. Barnhart died 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006 in West Vue Nursing Center.  He was born June 2, 1925 in Columbia. Mo., to Turner and Elsie Boggs Barnhart.

He was a graduate of University of Missouri with a degree in forestry.  On Aug. 17, 1947, Mr. Barnhart was married at Columbia to Reba McCann.

He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.  Mr. Barnhart jumped in Holland on Sept. 17, 1944 and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. From 1960 until his retirement in May 1988, he served as District Forester for the Missouri Department of Conservation.  Mr. Barnhart was a member of First Baptist Church of West Plains.

Mr. Barnhart is survived by his wife, Reba Barnhart, of the family home; three sons, Paul Barnhart, Springfield, Mo., Mark Barnhart, wife, Tammy, Bismarck, N.D., and Craig Barnhart, wife, Shirley, Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Opal Johnston, Springfield, Mo.; two nieces, and one nephew.  His parents; and one son, Chris, preceded him in death.

At Mr. Barnhart's request, there will be no funeral service.  He asked that those attending the visitation write a card to the family sharing some memory that shows how he touched their lives.

Lula June Cathey Hall, 87, of Ashland passed away Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Ashland Healthcare.

June was born Oct. 12, 1918, in St. Frances, Kan., to George W. and Sadie Mae Reich Cathey.

She married Benjamin Arthur Hall on Sept. 28, 1947, and he preceded her in death Dec. 14, 1978.

She lived most of her life in the Midway area and was a longtime 4-H leader. She was a member of Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church, Midway Locust Grove Baptist Church, United Methodist Women and Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Leland F. Hall and wife Robin of Columbia; three daughters, Mariea Hall Caruthers and husband Earl of Columbia, Macie L. Roberts and husband Gary of Higbee and Pauline M. Hopson Kinion and husband Billy Kinion of Columbia; two sisters, Frieda Willis of Columbia and Vinita Moreau and husband Elrie of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law Alvin and Dean Hall of Van Buren, Ark.; grandchildren Ben Caruthers, Cathy Clark, Tammy Katz, Gary D. Roberts II, Becky Roberts, Richard D. Hopson, Kevin L. Hopson, Joshua R. Kinion, Lisa D. Nev and Kayla Hall; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and one grandchild.

Willis Walker Smith, 77, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Olivet Christian Church with the Revs. Dennis Swearngin and James Smith officiating.

Mr. Smith was born March 27, 1928, in Boone County to Charles C. and Sara Maud Crews Smith. He married Marilyn Walden on Jan. 2, 1949, in Columbia and she survives.

He was the fourth generation to live on the family farm in Boone County. He farmed for many years in Boone County and was a grain handling systems dealer.

He worked for TWA as an instrument mechanic and was an airplane mechanic at Cottonwood Airport in Columbia. He was a former treasurer of the New Haven School District. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and was a former licensed pilot.

Mr. Smith retired after many years from the Boone County Assessor’s Office. He was a member of the Boone County Fire Protection District for over 30 years and was currently serving as chairman of the fire district board of directors.

He was a member of Olivet Christian Church and former member and chairman of the Olivet Church board of directors.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, of Columbia; two sons, Michael S. Smith and wife Phyllis of Columbia and Marcus W. Smith of Columbia; two brothers, Robert Smith and John Pat Smith of Ashland; three grandchildren, Desirae Grogan, Zebidiah Smith and Abraham Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Nikki Grogan, Nathan Grogan and Morgan Grogan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Matthew Smith.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, Boone County Historical Society or Olivet Christian Church.

Teresa Marie Turner, 37, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at University Hospital.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Columbia United Church of Christ, 3201 I-70 Drive N.W., with the Rev. Jerry Keeney officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Johns Church in Amazonia with the Rev. David Elliott officiating.
Mrs. Turner was born May 2, 1968, in Columbia to Richard W. and L. Marlene Brandt Dierking.

Teresa was a 1986 graduate of Hickman High School.

On Dec. 29, 1990, she married Brian Scott Turner Sr. in Amazonia.

She was employed with MBS Textbook Exchange since 1991.

She was a member of Columbia United Church of Christ.

She was an avid reader, especially of Stephen King novels, and loved to watch movies and listen to music. She cared for many animals, including her dog, Speckles.

Mrs. Turner was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in August 1997. She was rediagnosed in July 2004 while six months pregnant. She battled it for an additional 18 months with the love of her child.

Survivors include her husband and her son, Brian Scott Turner Jr., of Columbia; her father, Richard Dierking of Columbia; her mother, Marlene Dierking of Waverly; a sister, Sherry S. Wilper and her husband, Neal, of Columbia and a niece, Kayla Hampton; parents-in-law, Roy and Thelma Burgess Turner of Amazonia; sister-in-law Sherri Johnson of Amazonia; nephew and niece, David and Christina Johnson; and a grandmother-in-law, Dora Harding Turner.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Homer and Opal Dierking, and maternal grandparents, Wilfred and Eva Marie Brandt.

Martha was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Columbia to Eulalie and R.O. Hutchens, and they preceded her in death.

Martha lived her entire life in Columbia and was a 1941 graduate of Hickman High School. She later attended Orton-Rice Business College.

She married Harold Curtis Mitchell in 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1980.

Martha was a member of First Christian Church of Columbia, and she was a Columbia real estate agent from 1978 to 1981.

Martha was a loving mother and homemaker who found her greatest joy in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and pets.

Among her favorite pastimes were travel, music, flower gardening and reading.

Survivors include her three children, Carol Ann Ritter and her husband, Robert, Deborah Jane Fox and her husband, Andrew, and Gregory Curtis Mitchell and his wife, Karen, all of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Lee Ann Palmer and her fiance, Curtis L. Stone, Laurie Lynne Ritter, Marti Mitchell Richards and her husband, Shawn, Kimberly Laine Fox Reardon and her husband, Joe, Marci Ann Mitchell, Mitchell Ryan Ritter and his wife, Jamie, and Samuel Hayden Mitchell; and two great-grandchildren, Reagan Roxanne Richards and Abigail Nicole Reardon.

Martha was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Earl, and two sisters, Helen Mae Bass and Margaret Louise Sisson.

Rodney Alan Zwonitzer, 45, of Columbia passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia with Dr. John Yonker officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Rodney was born on March 11, 1960, in Columbia to John and Helen Zwonitzer, and they survive. He married Kimberly Kay Shaw in 1986, and she also survives.

Rodney was a lifelong resident of Columbia who graduated from Hickman High School in 1979. He worked for the Tribune and was also a member of First Christian Church.

Rodney is survived by three children, Michael, Kayla and Kelsey, of the home; one brother, Mike Zwonitzer of Rockford, Ill.; and one sister, Libby Mechlin of Columbia.

Rodney was preceded in death by one daughter, Crystal.

Dorothy "Dottie" Avery, 80, formerly of Columbia, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at St. Peters Manor in St. Peters.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. in Columbia. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Dottie was born May 30, 1925, in Moberly to Ira and Odell Crews Avery, and they preceded her in death.

She had made Columbia her home and lived there for most of her life. Dottie worked as a secretary at the Red Cross office in Columbia. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the local hospitals.

Dottie is survived by her beloved friend Margaret Peabody of Columbia; a niece, Marcia Gaddy of St. Charles; a nephew, Rodrik Avery of St. Peters; great-nieces and -nephews Ben, Angela, Kelly, Curtis and Clayton; and numerous other family members and friends.

Dottie was also preceded in death by her brother, Curtis Avery, and his wife, Mary.

Jack P. Hackethorn, 94, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at University Hospital.

At Jack’s request, no services will be held.

He was born May 28, 1911, son of Harry and Pearl Mount Hackethorn. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Betty.

When Jack was 4 years old, his family moved from Kansas City, Kan., to Columbia.

As a teen, he worked for Col. Ed Watson mailing papers from the Tribune’s Ninth Street office. With encouragement from an Associated Press reporter, he began to learn how to use a camera. After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism in 1936, he was hired by Acme News Pictures in Washington, D.C. One of his first assignments was photographing President Franklin Roosevelt. After leaving Acme, he worked for the Detroit Free Press and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. His pictures have appeared in thousands of publications around the world. One of his better-known photos was of President Harry Truman and Susie, the 1955 Missouri State Fair champion mule. Jack’s knowledge and love of mules began long before the mule became the Missouri state animal. In 1949, he bought Frances, the talking mule, for $200 from Frazier Farms in Drexel. Universal Studios flew Frances, at a cost of $450, to Hollywood for a screen test. Competing against eight other mules from all over the United States for the role, the Missouri mule was chosen for her appeal, great personality, long eyelashes and photogenic face, resulting in six "Francis, the Talking Mule" movies. Donald O’Connor commented that he stopped making the movies when Frances began receiving more fan mail than he did.

While in the Navy in World War II, he served in Australia and the Philippines. During the Truman administration, he served as executive secretary of the Missouri Democratic Party, where he met his wife, Betty Roach. Jack was the Missouri Farmers Association director of public affairs for 30 years. In the 1970s, he served as superintendent of mules, draft horses and miniature mules at the Missouri State Fair. Jack also helped establish the four-year medical school at MU. In 1996, he received the MU Distinguished Alumni Award.

Although Jack and Betty had no children, they were great friends with the neighborhood children and their pets. While living on Walnut Court, Jack organized the first annual dog show and parade. All the neighborhood children outfitted their dogs in their Sunday best, with each receiving a blue ribbon in a wide variety of "best-dressed" categories.

Jack will be remembered as a truly unforgettable character who loved talking politics, photographing just about anything, attending MU football and basketball games, and spending time with family, his many friends and coffee club cronies. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is also survived by his brother, Harry "Bus" Hackethorn and wife Linda of Houston; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Marshall of Marshall; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Barbara Ann Jenkins, 59, of Rich Hill passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Rich Hill United Methodist Church, with visitation at 1 p.m.

Mrs. Jenkins was born Feb. 12, 1947, in Columbia. She married Karl Jenkins on July 5, 1970, and they have resided at their home in rural Rich Hill for more than 30 years.

She attended Hickman High School and received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

She taught at schools throughout Bates and Vernon counties and led the K-12 gifted education program at Butler from 1996 until her retirement in 2002.

She was active in her church and community, working to improve education in Rich Hill as a founding member of Building a Better Tomorrow. Barbara attended services at Rich Hill United Methodist Church, where she had served as choir director and frequently created and presented original children’s sermons.

Survivors include her husband, Karl; a son, Michael Jenkins of Kansas City; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Derrick Hart of Lawrenceville, Ga.; four brothers, Elra, Russell and Larry Sapp of Columbia and Jim Sapp of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Norma Fraser of St. Louis and Peggy Pool of Columbia. She also was blessed with numerous other beloved family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Vencil Sapp of Columbia.

Edward Jackson Davison Sr., 73, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, at University Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at Memorial Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Davison was born on May 15, 1932, in Boone County to Arnold and Mary Willard Davison, and they preceded him in death.

He married Ruth Breedlove on Nov. 18, 1955, and she also preceded him in death.

He was a 1950 Hickman High School graduate. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954. He worked in the asphalt business until his retirement and most recently was working as a school bus driver for Columbia Public Schools.

Mr. Davison is survived by his daughter, Becky Stone and her husband, Steve, and two sons, David and Jack, all of Columbia; one brother, Charlie Willard of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren, Matt, Micki, Zach and Tony; one great-grandchild, Lexi; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

Mr. Davison was also preceded in death by two brothers, Evan and Auston Davison, and one sister, Patsy Griffin.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Columbia Cemetery for Barbara Cotton Tull, a former Columbia resident. The Rev. Mr. John Weaver of Sacred Heart Church will conduct the service. Barbara died at her home in Kerrville, Texas, on Feb. 25 after a brief illness. Her funeral service was held there earlier.

Barbara was born Nov. 10, 1935, in Columbia to the late Philip and Frances Cotton. She attended local schools, graduating from Hickman High School in 1953. After one year at Smith College, she attended the University of Missouri, graduating in 1957. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was Homecoming queen in 1954.

She married Frank Tull, M.D., of Columbia on June 1, 1957, at Sacred Heart Church. After completion of her husband’s military service and medical training, they resided in Sikeston from 1963 to 1972. They moved to Muskogee, Okla., in 1972, where they remained until 2001, when they retired to Kerrville.

Barbara was an avid golfer, a skill she learned from her father, in whose memory the Phil Cotton Memorial Golf Tournament is held yearly. She also enjoyed reading and playing bridge. She was a longtime court-appointed special advocate for at-risk children.

She is survived by her husband, of the home; a brother, Philip Cotton; and five children, Laura Kok and husband Jeroen, Mary Sarni and husband Marc, Frances Scriminger, Susan Holloway and husband Wade, and Frank Tull IV and wife Stacey. Other survivors include 12 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Sabra Tull Meyer and husband Jim; two nieces; and two nephews.

Thomas Daniel "Danny" Roberts, 55, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St. in Columbia. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born June 30, 1950, in Columbia, a son of William E. and Wanda Fay Chick Roberts.

He married Charlene M. Jurgens May 23, 1983.

The former manager of the Empire Roller Rink, Danny was a very special person who was a friend to many and a stranger to none.

A person who stood out in a crowd, he volunteered for Uncle Don’s Toy Drive and for Campfire USA. Danny was a generous person and willing to help in any way he could. He loved kids, and kids were always drawn to him.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene; his daughter, Jennifer L. Roberts of Arlington, Texas; a brother, William "Pete" Roberts and his wife, Lynda, of Ashland; a sister, Elaine Goodwin of Hallsville; many nieces and nephews; and lots of other family and friends.

His parents preceded Danny in death.

Charles "Chuck" D. Boothe passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at University Hospital.

Richard Earl Oliver, 77, of Columbia passed away Friday, March 3, 2006, at Columbia Manor.

Richard was born July 22, 1928, one of seven children born to Jacob Frank and Mary F. Allton Oliver. Richard attended Columbia Public Schools and graduated from Hickman High School in 1946. He later graduated from the University of Missouri in 1956, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and served in the Army during the Korean War. On June 11, 1983, he married Nina Duren, and she survives.

He was a longtime member of First Christian Church, where he was a deacon, and he also was a member of Twilight Masonic Lodge, the Royal Arch Mason and the Centralia Council. Richard was employed by the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 1992. He was an avid follower of the St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Missouri-Columbia Tigers.

Survivors include his wife; brothers Jack E. Oliver and J. Frank Oliver, both of Columbia; stepchildren Richard N. Long III of Tampa, Fla., Michael E. Long of Tampa and Kathryn Kozik of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, J. Harold Oliver, Charles Edward Oliver and William Owen Oliver; and one sister, Mary Frances Kuhlman of Mexico, Mo.

Donald "Don" Dean Douglass, 75, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at his home with his beloved family at his side.

Donald was born Aug. 10, 1930, to Gladys Ballenger Richardson and Glenn Douglass in Boone County.

On Oct. 9, 1950, he married Lois Davis in Springfield, Ark., and she survives.

He graduated from Hickman High School with the Class of 1948. Don was a member of Midway Locust Grove United Methodist Church and was very enthused about his membership there. He worked in construction, building electrical transmission lines and substations. Some of the jobs he was most proud of were the Churchill Memorial, Thomas Hill power plant, university nuclear plant and the present Tribune printing press and building. He retired from the IBEW 257 and spent his retirement years raising and showing cutting horses. He was inducted into the State of Missouri Cutting Horses Association Hall of Fame in 2006.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael Douglass and his wife Betsy of Blue Springs and Bruce Douglass and wife Mary Lamar of Rocheport; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter.

Ms. Susan Lynn McQuitty, 41, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at her home.

She was a Christian by faith. She was a graduate of Hickman High School and the University of Missouri-Columbia. She enjoyed traveling and music. She taught English at Belleview High School in Ocala from 1998 to 2003.

His family owned Gaebler’s Black and Gold, a popular University of Missouri student restaurant, from the 1930s to 1950s. He attended Hickman High School and was a member of its verse speaking choir. He continued to recite poetry until his death. He attended Kemper Military School and briefly the University of Missouri-Columbia until his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from USNA in 1945 and served in the Pacific fleet during the last days of World War II. He continued in the Naval Reserve and became commodore of the Corn Belt Fleet in the 1960s. He joined IBM in 1953 and worked designing software until his retirement in 1986.

Fred was married to Marilyn Larson Gaebler for 59 years, raising their family in Joliet, Ill., where they shared a deep and enduring commitment to community service. Marilyn and Fred received the Rotary Silver Eagle Award in 1998 and the Daughters of the American Revolution Award for Excellence in Community Service in 2003. They are the only couple nationally who jointly has been honored with the DAR award.

Survivors include four children and nine grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by Marilyn on Jan. 4, 2006, and his parents, Frederick J. Gaebler Sr. and Olinda Tacke Gaebler.

Mary Jo Jackson Buckley, 65, of Sedalia died peacefully Monday, March 13, 2006, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

A Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sedalia. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart.

She was born Aug. 9, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Dr. Robert L. and Elizabeth Jackson, who reside in Overland Park, Kan. In 1955, her family moved to Columbia, where she graduated from Hickman High School in 1958. She attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

She worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia.

She was married to James T. Buckley on Dec. 27, 1965, at Sacred Heart Church in Columbia. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sedalia, served on the board of directors of Citizens Against Spouse Abuse and helped found Hospice in Sedalia.

In 2001, she received the gift of life, a double lung transplant, giving her five precious years to spend with her friends, family and six grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by her five sons, James Patrick and wife Sherry of Sedalia, John Robert of Sedalia, Robert Jackson and wife Amy of Columbia, Brendan Connor and wife Mary of Kansas City and Brian Thomas of Washington, D.C.

She was the loving and dedicated grandmother "Nana" to Hope, Connor, Jack, Chloe, Ryan and Ellie.

In addition, she is survived by her loving sisters and brother, Ann Allen of Denver, Sarah Hoenninger of St. Louis, Kathy Green and husband Don of Dallas, Margy Gresham and husband Jim of Danville, Calif., Martha Ladenson and husband Paul of Baltimore and Bob Jackson and wife Linda of Kansas City. She also is survived by a brother-in-law, John Buckley and wife Donna of Kansas City, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, John T. and Thelma Buckley, and her nephew, John T. Jackson.

Her courageous and selfless spirit will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew her.

John Ancel Proctor III, 59, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at his home in Andover, Mass.

A memorial service was held April 2 at First Church, Congregational, in Swampscott, Mass.

Ancel was born Jan. 9, 1947, in Columbia to John "Jimmie" Ancel Proctor II and Martha McDonald Proctor. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He married Sue Ellen Schroeder in 1969.

He served as an information officer for the U.S. Army’s Presidential Honor Guard in Washington, D.C. After discharge from the Army, he was general manager of Arone Publications, a suburban newspaper in the D.C. area.

Moving to New York City, Ancel assumed an account executive position with Grey Advertising, where his clients included Mennen, G&W Industries and Calgon. In 1975, he joined Bozell, Jacobs, Kenyon & Eckhardt in Boston, where he spent more than 10 years as a vice president managing Ocean Spray, Allied Van Lines, Petite Mattoy and William Underwood Company.

Ancel then joined Arnold & Co., followed by Harold Cabot & Co., where he managed another fleet of clients, including McDonald’s Corporate, Nabisco Brands, New England Apple Products and Superior Brands.

During his advertising career, Ancel launched more than 20 new consumer products nationally, including Hold Four Hour Cough Suppressant, Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry and McDonald’s Halloween Pumpkin Happy Meal.

In the early 1980s, Ancel was a partner in Ancel Richards Inc., a specialty department store selling women’s and children’s wear, house wares and gifts in the historic McKinney Dance Hall on East Broadway.

He formed J. Ancel Proctor & Associates, a multidisciplined marketing consulting company, which operated in southern Oregon and the New England area.

An accomplished chef, Ancel enjoyed entertaining and photography.

He is survived by his son, John Ancel Proctor IV and his wife Laura Tomarchio of San Francisco; daughter, Erica Vanderhoof and husband Brian Vanderhoof of Melrose, Mass.; and sister Peggy Proctor Tomlins of Medford, Ore.

Jessie Katherine Starke, 93, of Columbia died Monday, March 27, 2006, at Columbia Health Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St. Visitation will be one hour before the services. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was born July 11, 1912, in Columbia, the daughter of Robert S. and Gertrude Chandler Turner.

On Aug. 27, 1943, she married Ralph P. Starke. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1990.

Mrs. Starke graduated from Hickman High School in 1931 and from Christian College and the University of Missouri.

She taught at Keene, Conley and New Providence schools. She was a member of Oakland Christian Church, where she had served as organist and pianist, and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship.

Survivors include one son, Richard P. Starke; two grandsons, Robert Paul Starke and Ryan Dean Starke; and one brother, Robert Turner.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson and Sidney Turner.

Robert Earnest Swearingen, 59, of Columbia passed away Monday, April 3, 2006, at his home as a result of a heart attack.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home.

Robert was born April 3, 1947, to Beverly and Mildred Swearingen in Columbia.

On Dec. 21, 1968, he married Mary Trumbower in Columbia, and she survives.

He grew up in Columbia and graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts degree in math and a Master of Arts in accounting. He was in the Navy Air Corps during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a Navy pilot in VS-22, an anti-submarine squadron based in Quonset Point, R.I. He was a CPA with his own practice. He was a member and president of the Institute of Managerial Accountants.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Emily Williams and her husband, Tim, and their children, Lindsay and Emma, of Evansville, Ind.; his parents; a sister, Sandra Grant of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother-in-law, Dr. William Trumbower, and his wife, Eva; two nephews, Darin Grant of Overland Park and William Trumbower of Columbia; two nieces, Catherine Downen of Wichita, Kan., and Elisabeth Trumbower of San Francisco; and three aunts, Betty Bowser of Columbia, Marguerite Hastings of Moberly and Mel Prast of Danville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by two aunts and three uncles.

L.E. "Gene" Grimes, 67, of Midland, Texas, died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at a Snyder hospital.

Gene was born Nov. 8, 1938, in Watonga, Okla., and married Kathleen Chase on June 10, 1972, in Midland.

Gene was very involved with the Petroleum Museum, to which he donated the oil rig. He was a member of the American Society of Professional Engineers and the International Association of Drilling Contractors.

Gene was a member of the Midland Naturalist Society. He also was a member and leader of the Texas Farm Bureau, Kiwanis and Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a licensed pilot and a rancher. Gene served in the National Guard. He was a member of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Midland; a son, Nickey Grimes of Midland; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie Grimes of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Don Seales of Midland; his father, Philip Grimes of Columbia; one brother, Grant Grimes of Atlanta; several grandchildren: Sarah Gene, Preston and Anthony Del Rio, and Stephanie and Wesley Seales, all of Midland; Aaron and Allison Grimes of Havelock, N.C.; Tammie Stuart of Greenville, Texas; Tiffany Grimes of Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina; and Valerie and Kimberly Grimes of Columbia; and six great-grandchildren.

Donna was an active member of Christian Chapel.

Lloyd Simpson Robinson, 84, lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2006.

A memorial service with visitation following will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Midway Heights Baptist Church in Columbia. Pastor Dave Schawo will perform the service.

Lloyd was born Sept. 19, 1921, to Clark Robinson and Nancy Sublett Robinson. On April 26, 1942, he married Helen Louise Martin, and she preceded him in death.

A Hickman High School graduate with the Class of 1939, Lloyd went on to serve in World War II. After his return, Lloyd worked as a local truck driver and later joined the Columbia Police Department as a Columbia police officer.

After over 27 years of loyal service as a teamster, Lloyd retired from Orscheln Brothers Truck Lines in Columbia.

Lloyd and wife Helen were very active as a square dance couple, traveling most weekends across Missouri and serving as past presidents of the Missouri Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs.

Lloyd was a member of Midway Heights Baptist Church in Columbia.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Kidwell and husband Tom of Columbia; three grandchildren, Lynette Austin, Jeff Kidwell and wife Diane of Columbia and Scott Kidwell and wife Stephanie of Fayetteville, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Austin of Columbia and Lauren Kidwell and Allison Kidwell of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, father and mother.

Cora L. Cragin, 81, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Lenoir Woods.

Cora was born March 26, 1925, in Fulton to Charles and Nannie Purdy Stephenson.

She married Wm "Joe" Cragin on Dec. 27, 1946, and he survives.

She graduated from Hickman High School in 1943.

Cora served with the Women’s Army Corps from March 27, 1945, to Nov. 22, 1946, in New Mexico.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and very active in church organizations.

She was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

She worked as a legal secretary and later in a real estate office before retirement.

Survivors include her husband of Columbia; foster father Raymond W. Williams of Columbia; two daughters, Marie A. and husband Harry Ray of Birmingham, Ala., and Michele A. Palmer of Springfield; a sister, Margaret Stephenson of Fulton; a granddaughter, Michelle L. and husband Alan Smith of St. Louis; and two great-granddaughters, Veronica and Isabelle Smith of St. Louis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her foster mother, Lucy Williams; and two brothers.

Survivors include her husband, George Gardner of Columbia; one son, Taurean Crum of Columbia; one daughter, Ronnika Gardner of Columbia; five brothers, Bishop Lorenzo Lawson, Daryl Sheley, David Sheley and Dale Sheley, all of Columbia, and Rodney Sheley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Allion Kay Campbell of Mexico, Mo.; three aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Susan H. Gehringer, 82, of Columbia died Saturday, April 22, 2006.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. in Columbia. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gehringer was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Moberly to Vaughn and Mildred Mitchell Hulen. The family moved to Columbia shortly thereafter.

She married Truman Gehringer on June 6, 1948, in Columbia, and he passed away in 2003.

She graduated from Hickman High School in 1941 and from Christian College in 1943. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, majoring in food and nutrition. She served a year’s internship at the University of Indiana-Indianapolis Medical School to become a registered dietitian. She was a 50-year member of the American Dietetic Association. She was a dietitian for six years in the University of Missouri residence hall system. She served as the hospital dietitian at Samaritan Hospital in Macon for 17 years. She was a member of New Horizons Methodist Church in Columbia.

Survivors include one son, James Robert of Mexico, Mo.; a daughter, Connie of Columbia; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Beth.

A half-sister and a half-brother preceded her in death, as did her parents.

Melissa McGlasson, 48, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, April 19, 2006.

A private burial service was held Tuesday, April 25, at Memorial Cemetery.

Melissa was born Oct. 27, 1957, in Columbia to Boyd and Faye McGlasson.

Melissa is survived by her son, Derek Jordan; mother Faye McGlasson; brother Mike McGlasson and wife Robin, all of Columbia; sisters Patricia Wolff and husband Leonard of Sandy, Utah, and Kimberly Johnsen and husband Ty of Lee’s Summit; and many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Boyd McGlasson.

Logan C. Kyle, 96, of Tyler, Texas, died Monday, April 24, 2006, in Tyler.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Lloyd James Funeral Chapel in Tyler.

He lived in Columbia as a child and attended school in Columbia.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona; one daughter, Barbara Hallford; two sons, Logan W. Kyle and Robert Kyle; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronald Dwayne Rutter, 52, of Bowling Green and formerly of Columbia, passed away Monday, April 24, 2006.

Services were held Thursday, April 27. Burial was at Antioch Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 8, 1953, to Dwayne and Jean Rutter of Columbia. On Nov. 24, 1979, he married Gail Tinsley. They celebrated 26 years of marriage. In 1988, he became a licensed practical nurse. This profession became his life. He was a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club in St. Louis.

His family was foremost in his thoughts. He was a great husband and father, and he loved telling hilarious jokes. He leaves behind many friends as well as family. He is a man that will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. Everyone who didn’t know him would’ve loved him.

Family proceeding him in death includes his dearly loved grandparents, Frank and Fern Rutter of Columbia and Opal and Arnold Bink of Columbia.

Survivors include his parents; his wife; one sister, Tina Stuart, and her husband, Bobby, of Fulton; one brother, Terry, and his wife, Cherie, of Columbia; and his children, Christina Rutter of Anchorage, Alaska, stepdaughter Tracy Miller of Columbia, Michael Rutter and his wife Sarah of Columbia, and Lyndse Rutter and Megan Rutter, both of Bowling Green; and four grandchildren.

Harry D. "BoBo" Hunt, 71, of Lee’s Summit passed away Monday, May 1, 2006, in his home due to complications with cancer.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Hunt was born June 28, 1934, in Columbia, the second child of Manual and Alberta.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He met his wife, Rochelle, while home on leave, and they were subsequently married in San Diego, Calif. They were married for 52 years. After the Navy, he pursued a career in law enforcement, first serving five years with the Columbia Police Department and later retiring from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in 1998 after 32 years of dedicated service.

Survivors include his wife, Rochelle; sons Micheal of Harrisonville, Wesley and wife Linda of Rio Dell, Calif., Jay and wife Jennifer of Lee’s Summit, Jeffrey and wife Tessa of St. Paul and Matthew and wife Christie of Lee’s Summit; 10 grandchildren, James, Christine, Meagan, Caitlin, Donald, Tyler, Taylor, Tristen, Jamison and Logan; seven great-grandchildren; and many, many friends, because he always made a stranger a friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patsy DeHaven.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Goldie Ella Nienaber Gaines, 96, of Columbia died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Lenoir Health Care Center in Columbia.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 3, at Gibson Funeral Home in Brunswick. The Rev. Jan Schnepf officiated. Burial was at McCullough Cemetery in Triplett.

Goldie was born Aug. 21, 1909, on a farm near Columbia, the daughter of Frank Joseph and Eva Lena Sullins Nienaber.

She attended O’Rear and Keene rural area schools in Boone County. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1927, then attended Orton & Rice Business School.

In August 1928, she moved to Jefferson City, where she was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., was transferred to St. Louis in January 1942 and retired from that company in September 1959.

She was married Nov. 18, 1939, to William Orval Gaines. Upon his retirement in 1965, they moved to a farm northeast of Triplett known as the Bruner Farm and continued to live there until his death on Dec. 9, 1998.

Mrs. Gaines then moved to Lenoir Health Care Center.

She was a member of Brunswick United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Salisbury chapter.

She is survived by several nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces. Goldie will be greatly missed by a number of good friends and neighbors.

Goldie was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister and six brothers, one of whom was killed in 1944 during World War II.

Pallbearers were John Summers, Keith Leimkuehler, Bruce Harmon, Gene Lowe, David Buie and Norman Patrick.

Betty Jacobs Aufranc, 80, of Columbia died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Atkins-Holman Student Commons on the Columbia College campus in Columbia. It was Betty’s wish to be cremated and to not have a funeral service.

Betty was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Boone County, the daughter of Reuben T. and Vera Mae Jacobs, and they preceded her in death. On Feb. 9, 1946, she married Curtis Aufranc, and he survives.

Betty graduated from Hickman High School in 1943. She attended Christian College (later Columbia College) and graduated with an associate’s degree in 1945.

She was a secretary for the University of Missouri before her children were born, and then became a stay-at-home mom before becoming a legal secretary for George A. Spencer from 1965 until her retirement in 1997. For many years, she managed the affairs and finances of many elderly Boone Countians.

Betty is survived by her husband; one daughter, Barbara Street and husband Dennis of Pensacola, Fla.; one son, David Aufranc and wife Tina of Columbia; five grandchildren, Heather Keller of Fulton, Holly Musick of Columbia, Ben Street of Pensacola, Tyler Aufranc of Columbia and Hannah Aufranc of Columbia; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Russell Jacobs of Glendale, Calif., and Bandy Jacobs of Columbia; three sisters, Mary Katherine Sells of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Dorothy Hatfield of Columbia and Vera Coats of Lake Wales, Fla.

Two brothers preceded her in death, Richard Jacobs and Reuben T. Jacobs Jr.

Betty was a longtime supporter of the Missouri Tigers, Columbia College and the Hickman Kewpie class of 1943.

Betty was a wonderful, vibrant and outgoing woman who will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Ernest Cleo "Brownie" Brown, 84, of Columbia died Monday, May 15, 2006, at University Hospital.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Nilson Funeral Home, with visitation at 3 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. John Fussner.

Mr. Brown was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Boone County to the late Ernest Richard Brown and Effie Hatton Brown.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1939.

He married Edna Fay Welch on March 13, 1948, in Columbia, and she preceded him in death April 16, 2006.

He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church and a life member of Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ Local No. 518.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart with four oak leaf clusters and a merit of courage medal.

Survivors include a son, Ernest Paul Brown of Kingdom City; four daughters, Margie Lee of Columbia, Beverly Maupin of Claremore, Okla., Glenda Batye of Columbia and Betty Brown of Hemet, Calif.; one nephew; five nieces; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his brother and one great-granddaughter.

Clifford Monroe Campbell, 54, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

Cliff was born July 1, 1951, in Boone County to Clark and Alice Campbell. On Sept. 29, 2001, he married Karen Boillot and she survives.

Cliff was a lifelong plumber in Boone County and took great pride in, and care of, his family of customers. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid motorcyclist. He spent many hours working on, talking about and riding motorcycles. He will be greatly missed by many.

Cliff is also survived by his father, Clark Campbell; three sisters, Hollie Spencer, Cheryl Hudson and Cecilia Campbell; and his daughter, Minda Brush.

Martin Edward Nash, 86, of Borger, Texas, formerly of Columbia, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006, at his home.

Jim McKinney, 79, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at the Missouri Veterans’ Home in Mexico, Mo. He died of complications of corticobasal ganglionic degeneration, a rare neurological disorder.

He was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Hutchinson, Kan., the son of C.H. and Margery McKinney.

He married Margaret Pemberton on Oct. 7, 1951, and she survives.

Jim graduated from Hickman High School in 1944. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1950. While a student at MU, Jim was a member of the 1949 golf team that won the Big Seven golf championship, a feat not duplicated for 50 years.

He was in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946.

While living in Decatur, Ill., Jim began a series of golf exhibitions with 11 PGA players, including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriquez and Lee Trevino, that continued into the 1990s. His golfing career included being a three-time champion of the Columbia Country Club and eight times at the Country Club of Missouri.

Jim was captain of the Missouri Senior Challenge Golf team and executive director of the Missouri Senior Golf Association. As a member of the Columbia Junior Chamber of Commerce, he was instrumental in the planning and construction of the L.A. Nickell Golf Course.

Professionally, Jim was a vice president of Citizens’ National Bank in Decatur, vice president of Boone County National Bank and senior vice president of Centerre Bank. As a realtor and broker, Jim was a member of the Million Dollar Club.

Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and trustee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, John B. McKinney; daughters Mary L. McCoy and Margaret B. Brown; three granddaughters, all of Columbia; and one sister, Diane Ball of Yakima, Wash.

Roy E. Allen, 86, of Collierville, Tenn., formerly of Columbia, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006.

Roy was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Columbia to Berryman and Ruby Allen.

He married Bonnie Jo Barnes of Mokane in 1939. They had two children, Dave "Corky" Allen and Lindsey Stewart of Collierville.

Survivors include his wife and daughter, sister Helen Ously, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and son.

Sharon Parman, 70, of Columbia died Monday, May 22, 2006, at The Bluffs.

A private service was held at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sharon was born Oct. 7, 1935, to Garland Parman and Nell Gordon Parman.

She is survived by one sister, Julie Rader of Columbia.

Wanda Lou Roberts, 57, of Independence died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Medical Center of Independence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Newcomer’s Noland Road Chapel in Independence. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service. Burial will be at D.W. Newcomer’s Crematory in Kansas City.

Wanda was born in Sapp and graduated from Hickman High School in 1965. She was a metal finisher by trade.

Wanda is survived by her significant other, Curtis McVeigh of Independence; two sons, Russell and Roger Roberts, both of Hallsville; two daughters, Rhonda Martin of Macon and Elizabeth Gooden of Hallsville; mother Lona Forsee and stepfather Homer Forsee of New Franklin; and three brothers, Robert, Harold and Raymond Old; and sister Donna Miller. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her father, George K. Old.

Robert Rollins Turner, 77, of Columbia passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of services at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia.

Mr. Turner was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Columbia to Sidney Rollins and Opal Nevins Turner and they preceded him in death. On Nov. 1, 1953, he married Betty Mitchem and she survives. Robert was a graduate of Hickman High School and then entered the Army in 1950. He served with the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. In 1952, he joined the Army Reserve before retiring in 1978 as a first sergeant. Mr. Turner was employed at Alton Automobile Co. and Joe Machens Ford until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the American Legion Post 202 and Voiture 292 of the 40 & 8.

Robert is also survived by a son, Robert R. Turner Jr. and wife Terry of Overland Park, Kan.; daughter Ronda Miller and husband Alex of Columbia; three grandchildren, Joel Miller and wife Jennifer of Killeen, Texas, Seth Turner of Overland Park and Sarah Miller of Los Angeles.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Hankins.

Gary Dale Acton, 61, of Hemet, Calif., died Saturday, June 3, 2006.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 13, at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery in California.

Gary was born in Columbia. He graduated from Hickman High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda; a sister, Wanda Backues; and three brothers, Donald Acton, Vernon Senor and Edward Senor.

Frances "Kay" Wade, 60, of Columbia passed away Thursday, June 15, 2006, at West Village Manor in Columbia.

Kay was born Sept. 20, 1945, in Columbia to William O. and Frances A. Semon Wade.

Roy Lindell Murray, 81, of Columbia, a former longtime resident of Mexico, Mo., passed away Friday, June 16, 2006, at his home after an extended illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at Arnold Funeral Home in Mexico. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Murray was born May 1, 1925, in Boone County to J. Leo and Ruth Trimble Murray, who preceded him in death. He was a fifth-generation descendant of Caleb Fenton II, who was among the original pioneers of Boone County.

On Sept. 14, 1946, he married Dorothy Lyle, and she survives at home.

He was a graduate of Hickman High School and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and in 1951 began a 36-year career with A.P. Green Refractories, during which time he supervised five different units in the Mexico plant and was production superintendent for the company’s Birmingham, Ala., facility.

He also owned his own contracting business and was an accomplished hardwood craftsman.

Mr. Murray was a member of First Baptist Church in Mexico and was active in civic organizations including the Boy Scouts and the Optimists, and he coached Little League baseball.

Survivors include his wife, of Columbia; his son, Michael R. Murray of Columbia; his daughter, Sharon Nelson, and her husband, Terry, of Columbia; and his sister, Lois Douglas of Columbia.

He will be held in loving memory as a devoted husband and father and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends who loved him and whose lives he touched with his quiet strength and positive outlook.

Rex Randolph Trimble, 48, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2006, at home.

Mr. Trimble was born Sept. 29, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Kan., to Robert Raymond and Joan Margrave Trimble.

In 1961, Randy’s family moved to Stillwater, Okla., where he attended Kindergarten through second grade. Before entering third grade, the family returned to Pittsburgh for one year. During this time, Randy was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1966, the family moved to Columbia, and Randy graduated from Hickman High School in 1975.

He worked in retail sales, banking services and bookkeeping, finally taking an early retirement from the Columbia Daily Tribune after a disabling auto accident in 2001. Randy was an avid fan of all Mizzou sports, especially football. He also pursued throughout his life a childhood passion for world history, with emphasis on the military and the religious.

He is survived by his wife, Abby; his parents, of Columbia; a sister, JoLynne and husband Phil Perry of Caldwell, Kan.; a niece, Leslie and husband Matt Curtis; a great-nephew, Trey Curtis of Shawnee, Kan.; and a host of in-laws.

Louis E. Frech, 59, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at his home.

He was born Aug. 31, 1946, in New Orleans to William and Dorothea Frech. The family moved to Columbia in 1951. He graduated from Hickman High School in 1964 and attended the University of Missouri.

After serving in the Army, he married Betty Roberts in 1965 and started Frech Paving Co. in 1970. He took great pride in his company and the work they did. Louis loved his family and friends, trips to Florida, his farm, fishing, barbecuing and riding his motorcycle.

Louis is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Lisa M. Klenke and husband Roy and son Jim and wife Kathy; his grandchildren, Sydney and Olivia Klenke and Katie Frech, all of Columbia; his mother, Dorothea Frech of Alabama; and brothers Andy and wife Kathy of Indiana, Bill and wife Sandy of New Jersey and David and wife Linda of Columbia.

Anna Dean Baker, 59, of Columbia passed away Monday, July 3, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Baker was born April 15, 1947, in Columbia to Wallace R. and Maedean Nichols Robinson.

She married Lawrence Baker on Feb. 23, 1968, in Columbia, and he survives.

She loved playing bingo, and she also enjoyed going to auctions to look for antiques. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Anna worked for the University of Missouri-Columbia in the vice provost’s office, where she spent more than 20 years.

Survivors include her mother, Maedean Robinson of Columbia; her husband, Lawrence Baker of Columbia; two daughters, Carmen Baker of Columbia, and Leigh Pemberton and husband Matt of Hallsville; two grandsons, Kevin Baker of Columbia and Lucas Pemberton of Hallsville; two granddaughters, Alora Baker and Elizabeth Baker, both of Columbia; two sisters, Carmen Brown of Columbia and Irene Ethington of Columbia; sister-in-law Bev Robinson of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Carl Ray Robinson; mother-in-law Allene Sapp; and one niece, Angela Lynn Robinson.

Raymond P. Dudley, 76, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at his home.

Dr. Kenneth Lee Lay was born April 15, 1942, in Tyrone to a loving father and mother - Omer and Ruth Lay. Ken spent 64 years on Earth doing God’s work helping others with great compassion. On July 5, 2006, we know that Ruth and Omer embraced their precious son once again.

Ken’s life exemplified by Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

Despite his meager upbringing, Ken was always generous with his time, money, love, talents and leadership. To know Ken was to love him.

Many benefited from Ken’s generosity - the American Heart Association, Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, Aspen Institute, Assistance League of Houston, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Brookwood Community, Child Advocates Inc., The Counsel for Alcohol and Drugs Houston, DIFFA, Episcopal High School, First United Methodist Church, Holocaust Museum Houston, Horatio Alger Scholarship Fund, Houston Area Women’s Center, Houston Food Bank, Houston SPCA, NAACP, Open Door Church, Susan G. Omen Breast Cancer Foundation, Rice University, the Salvation Army, Star of Hope, the University of Houston, the United Negro College Fund, United Way of Texas Gulf Coast, and YMCA of Greater Houston.

Ken’s door was always open, whether it was to help with college funds for a child, to help a former Enron employee pay their mortgage, to help young entrepreneurs make their dreams a reality or give a second chance when he believed in a person. Ken could not say no to anyone needing help.

When asked why he always looked for the best in everyone, Ken would simply reply that it was much better than the alternative.

Ken gave his time and energy to lead huge Houston events such as the Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, the Welcome Home Desert Storm/Desert Shield Troops parade and referendum campaigns to finance the new Houston baseball park and football/rodeo stadium, as well as the new Houston basketball arena and the Republican National Convention. Ken did everything possible to make his much-loved city a better place to live.

Ken’s love of Linda was unsurpassed - they were to celebrate their 24th anniversary on July 10 - they were truly best friends, soul mates and partners. They were always holding hands and demonstrating their incredible adoration for each other. Their relationship was truly unique, and Linda considers herself the luckiest woman in the world to have had those precious years with Ken.

Ken leaves behind five children, Robyn, Mark, David, Elizabeth and Beau, who all love him very much. He was their role model for life, business and Christian faith. They are blessed with strong memories of a father who respected each of them for their uniqueness and took time to foster in them the desire to achieve their best. They enjoyed lively dinner conversations, festive holidays and particularly their quiet times with him.

Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. - Proverbs 17:6

Twelve grandchildren - Nicholas, Hannah, Hailey, Sashay, Zach, Pate, Alex, Gage, Preston, Katie, Lucas and Tessa - remember their beloved "Papi/Papia" (depending on which of the 12 you ask), who was never afraid to be silly to entertain one of his treasured grandchildren. He loved teaching them how to whistle, cluck, ride ponies, ride snowmen in Colorado and spent precious time with them watching college football and attending many recitals.

Ken was loved and admired by his sisters, Bonnie and Sharon. They share memories of family, Ruth’s fried chicken and lots of conversation and humor. While the Lay family did not have much money, they were always close and supportive of each other. Ken always had the time to listen and support his family in the best and worst of times. He made many trips to Missouri for holiday celebrations and to visit his sick and dying parents in the last of their lives. He was the Rock of Gibraltar for his parents and his sister.

Ken’s first wife, Judie, continued to love and support Ken through the greatest challenges of his life and never questioned his integrity.

Ken’s faith supported him throughout his life and gave him the confidence to believe in people. Above all, he trusted God that he had a plan, even if it was never perfectly clear.

While Ken was the son of parents who did not have the opportunity to go to college, Ken graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1964 from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and a master’s degree in economics in 1965. At MU, Ken was a member of and served as president of Beta Theta Pi. Ken was proud of his fraternity and maintained strong contacts with his fraternity brothers through the years; he found great strength in their support.

Ken completed his formal education at the University of Houston, where he obtained a doctorate in economics in 1970. While there, Ken achieved the additional honors of Omicron Delta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon and was listed in "Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities."

Ken led a long and distinguished career in the public and private sector. Ken worked with Humble Oil - now Exxon Corp. - from 1965 to 1968 as an economist in the Corporate Planning Department.

In 1968, Ken enlisted in Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Navy, where from 1968 to 1971 he served as an ensign; lieutenant junior grade; lieutenant; special assistant to the Navy comptroller and financial analyst; and in the office of assistant secretary of the Navy, Department of the Navy, at the Pentagon. While serving with the Navy, Ken received the Navy Commendation Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Ken’s legacy as a leader in energy regulation was rooted in his service with the Federal Power Commission from 1971 to 1972, when he served as a technical assistant to the commissioner and vice chairman of the Federal Power Commission. Ken left the FPC to serve as the energy deputy undersecretary for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

In 1974, Ken left the public sector in Washington, D.C., to begin his career in the natural gas industry. Ken joined Florida Gas Co. in Winter Park, Fla., as vice president of corporate development, later holding the office of senior vice president of the transmission company and president of its successor company, Continental Resources Co.

Ken left Continental Resources Co. in 1981 to join Transco Energy Co. in Houston, where he held the positions of president, chief operating officer and director. In 1984, Ken accepted the position as chairman and CEO of Houston Natural Gas Co., which merged with InterNorth in 1985 and would later be renamed Enron Corp.

Ken loved Enron and saw the company as one of limitless possibilities. He often talked of the incredible talent at Enron and believed Enron employees were unsurpassed in any industry. Ken believed the real value of Enron was in its people. From the most junior employee to his top executives, Ken treated all with the same dignity and respect they deserved as children of God. Employees often remarked on how he recalled their names, family and other personal details they shared with him.

For those who know and love Ken, we take comfort in the knowledge he is in the loving presence of the one true judge.

Celebrations of Ken’s life for family and friends will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Aspen Chapel in Aspen, Colo., and also at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at First United Methodist Church-Downtown in Houston.

Jeannette Kelley, 73, was freed from a long battle with ALS on July 10, 2006, while being cared for in the home she adored by family and loving care givers.

There will be a memorial gathering of friends at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at Memorial Funeral Home, on Thursday.

She was born on Feb. 20, 1933, to August and Myrtle Dothage at home in McBaine and lived in Boone County all her life. She was a graduate of Hickman High School and Christian College. She married Sterling Kelley in 1953.

Jeannette and Sterling embarked on their entrepreneurial adventures in 1966 when they opened their first automobile dealership, Kelley Pontiac. This led to numerous other businesses being added. They built their businesses for 20 years and met their retirement goal at age 50. She then began working for her daughters in their respective businesses.

Her final career change was her favorite, however, when she became Grandma to her three adoring grandchildren. She left not one finger or toe unkissed.

She was a devoted member of Altrusa International for 28 years. She served as president, secretary and numerous other capacities and was recently awarded Altrusa’s Community Service Award.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years; a sister, Martha Cathey; her daughters, Diane McMillen and Luanne Prestigiacomo; three grandchildren, Christiana Jeannette, James Prestigiacomo and Kelley McMillen; adoptees Laurie Trask and Poo Gaylord; and many nieces and nephews.

Sharon Kay Ballew, 61, of Columbia, passed away Friday, July 21, 2006, in St. Louis.

Sharon was born on Dec. 31, 1944, to Russel and Mary Noel Mustain in Boone County. On Dec. 13, 1969, she married Charles Ballew, and he survives.

She was a member of Dripping Spring Baptist Church, where she loved participating in her quilting group.

Survivors include her husband Charles of Columbia; one daughter, Lola Dealiso, of Independence; three grandsons of Independence; a stepbrother, John Rawlings; a stepsister, Marilyn McCormick; brother-in-law Jesse Ballew; and sister-in-law Alice Nesta.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents.

Thomas A. Turner Jr., 57, of Sunrise Beach, beloved husband, father, brother and friend to many, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 22, 2006, at his home in Sunrise Beach with wife Jan, son Jeff, brothers and sisters by his side.

Tom’s love and passion for life will live on.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2006, at Hedges Funeral Home in Camdenton with Valley of Hope Chaplain Scott Ehrlich officiating. Graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

He was born May 4, 1949, in Columbia, the son of Thomas A. and Dorothy A. Turner.

He was a 1967 graduate of Hickman High School. In June of 1973, Tom received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism.

Tom married Janet Lee Jairett on Dec. 27, 1989, in Las Vegas.

Tom had been the head of Lake Media One Publishing Company for the last 16 years. He was responsible for leading the company through a period of dynamic growth and change. In 1990, the company consisted of the Reveille and Lake Sun Leader. Today, Lake Media One includes Lake Sun, Missouri Ozarks Publishing, Vacation News and Vision Media, among others. The company is responsible for the publication and distribution of 17 periodicals with a workforce of more than 60 employees in the Lake of the Ozarks, Jefferson City and Columbia markets.

He was responsible for the transition of a quiet community newspaper known as The Reveille to Lake Sun Leader, a daily award-winning newspaper.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; son Jeff Turner of Scottsdale, Ariz.; stepson Mark Monroe of Pinetop, Ariz.; stepdaughter Kim Hurshman of Springfield; two grandsons, Nicholas and Nathan Hurshman; sisters Sharon Vick, Karen Harms and husband Warren and Roxanne Gentry and husband Todd, all of Columbia; brothers Tim Turner, Todd Turner and Brian Turner, all of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Dorothy Turner.

Pallbearers are David Sprague, Roger Sprague, Richard Turner, Larry Blecha, Todd Gentry and Billy Rapp. Honorary pallbearers are Michael Harms, Derrick Harms and Steven Franke.

William John Grieshaber Jr., 42, of Columbia died Sunday, July 23, 2006.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27 at Woodcrest Chapel, 2201 W. Nifong. Visitation will be held Thursday at the church beginning at noon until time of service. Private burial will be at Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.

Bill was born in Kansas City on Oct. 5, 1963, the son of William J. and Clara Grieshaber. As a youth, Bill was an active swimmer with the Columbia Swim Club and later was a member of the Hickman High School swim team where he was known as "Greased Lightning." He was also a proud Boy Scout with Troop 706 while growing up.

He was the owner and operator for nearly four years of Mike’s Quick Mart near Columbia and was employed with the University of Missouri for 17 years. Bill was a sponsor of the Harrisburg Football Team and was an avid truck puller. He was one of the drivers of the "Screamin’ Mimi" truck pulls throughout the state.

Survivors include his mother, Clara Grieshaber-Slagle of Columbia; his fiancée, Shelley Anderson of Sturgeon; his sister Gail Gibson and husband Rob of Kansas City; two nieces, Brooke and Bailey Gibson of Kansas City; and he also leaves several aunts, uncles and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his father, William J. Grieshaber Sr.

John William Daly, 61, of Columbia passed away Saturday, July 29, 2006, at his home.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Broadway Christian Church, 2601 W. Broadway.

Mr. Daly was born in Aruba, Dutch Caribbean, on June 27, 1945.

He came to Columbia in 1956 but never forgot his ties to the island of his birth and greatly enjoyed attending reunions both in the U.S. and in Aruba.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1963, attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and was in the National Guard.

Most of his career was spent in the insurance industry. He was a member of Broadway Christian Church and also the Downtown Optimist Club.

John is survived by one sister, Maureen Daly of Columbia; two nieces, Deborah Breese-Garelick of Scottsville, N.Y., and Susan Pinkowski of Louisburg, Penn.; one nephew, Douglas Breese of Maplewood; and four great-nieces.

He was a loving brother, uncle and friend.

He cared deeply about his church and community.

Wayne Howard Hoecker, 66, passed away July 31, 2006, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Platte Woods United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Memorial Cemetery in Columbia.

He was born on Nov. 27, 1939, in Ames, Iowa to Wesley Henry Hoecker and Grace Semon Hoecker.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1957 and the University of Missouri in 1961.

He served as an officer in the Navy and then attended law school at the University of Missouri, where he received his law degree in 1967.

Wayne worked as an assistant attorney general for the State of Missouri. Later, he joined the firm of Gage and Tucker, where he ultimately became partner. He remained as a partner when the firm merged and became Lathrop and Gage. In private practice, Wayne specialized in antitrust and agribusiness litigation. In addition to his work for the firm, he served as General Counsel of Mid-American Dairymen.

Wayne’s involvement in the community included a term as secretary for the Kansas City Missouri Police Board. He also served on the board of the Coves Homeowners Association and Winterpoint Homeowners Association in Breckenridge, Colo. He was a longtime member of Platte Woods United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his two daughters, Anne Hoecker of San Francisco and Carolyn Hoecker Luedtke of San Mateo, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kathryn Durbin Luedtke and Stefan Edward Luedtke; a brother, Perk Hoecker of Columbia; and a sister Kay Geuder of Harbor Springs.

James E. "Skip" Semmons, Jr., 56, of Columbia died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services, conducted by the Rev. John Fussner, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Nilson Funeral Home. Visitation will take place one hour before the funeral service.

Skip was born Aug. 9, 1949, in Columbia to James E. Semmons and Helen T. Semmons.

During his youth, Skip participated in the Boy Scouts and earned their highest award, Eagle Scout. Skip graduated from Hickman High School. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Army and served in Korea.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering and taught engineering at the Bell Howell Institute in Kansas City. After entering the building industry, he came home to Columbia and purchased Gunther’s Games video arcade.

Skip’s passion for competition found him joining the Missouri Sports Shooting Association, where he earned Missouri State Champion recognition. He started in black-powder competition then moved on to pistol, followed by rifle, competition. He became a distinguished pistol shot as well as a distinguished rifleman, making him one of only 50 civilians to be double distinguished. He became high-power and long-range master. He was one of the finest shooters in the country.

Skip worked for Sprint as a customer service representative.

His love for his pets and the outdoors brought him much pleasure and peace. There wasn’t a day that went by when he wasn’t feeding the squirrels, deer and birds or playing with his trusted dogs, Jack and Molly. Teaching was his focus in life, whether it was with his relatives, pets, friends or at work. He had an uncanny knack for simplifying a difficult task, teaching the process and enjoying the results. His final gift was to donate his corneas to two people who desperately wanted to see.

Skip is survived by his wife, Janet; his mother, Helen T. Semmons of Mission, Kan., his father, James E. Semmons and his wife, Jo Ann Semmons, of Orange City, Fla.; his two sisters, Charmian Zurovsky of Lenexa, Kan., and Glenda Olivas of Gardner, Kan.; his stepsister, Stacy Rogers of Orange City; four nieces, Jenifer, Sarah, and Megan Zurovsky, all of Lenexa, Kan., and Katie Olivas of Gardner, Kan.; his stepson, William Aaron Weitkemper; two stepdaughters, Jana Weitkemper of Houston, Texas, and Lori Bruner of Catlettsburg, Ky.; and two step-grandchildren, Jack and Beckett Bruner, both of Catlettsburg.

John "Jay" Robert Strawn, 52, of Columbia passed away on Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 2615 Shepard Blvd., with the Rev. Bill Haney officiating. A reception will be held following the service.

John was born April 1, 1954, in Columbia to J.A. and Ruth Strawn. He graduated from Hickman High School and received a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

He married Charlotte Stone on June 26, 1976, in Columbia, and on May 26, 1983, they had one son, Scott Phillip Strawn.

John chose a professional career in the field of education. He taught at Columbia College, Moberly Area Community College and did private tutoring at Focus on Learning.

John was a multitalented individual with interest in music, literature and sports. In music, he was a gifted guitar player and enjoyed passing on the love of music to his students. He was a published writer and was well read in a variety of fields. His area of expertise was in Southern literature, most notably the works of William Faulkner. As in other pursuits, John gave his all and often took his hobbies of running and biking to the extreme, participating in marathons and triathlons. He expressed his love for basketball by coaching his son in Daniel Boone Little League, including participation in a state tournament.

In addition to his wife and son, of Overland Park, Kan., John is survived by his father, J.A. Strawn; sister, Brenda Betz; brother Joe Strawn and wife Elaine; brother J. W. Strawn; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Warren Olson, 76, lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Mary was born Oct. 22, 1929, the daughter of Charles Leasker and Mary Alice Stone Gates. On May 17, 1947, she married Raymond Olson in Columbia, and he survives.

She was a graduate of Hickman High School and worked for Saffee’s for 12 years until her retirement in 1992.

Evelyn Dixon, 95, of Columbia passed away on Aug. 25, 2006, at University Hospital.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Lenoir Chapel in Columbia. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Evelyn was born Aug. 28, 1910, in Warren County.

She moved to Columbia at a very young age and graduated from Hickman High School in 1928.

She was employed by MFA until 1950, then moved to Kansas City and was employed in the mortgage and loan business until her retirement in 1983. She continued to reside in Kansas City until moving to Lenoir Retirement Center in October 2002.

Her parents were Fred and Caroline Riechmann, who farmed at the west edge of Columbia.

She had one brother, Clarence Riechmann.

She is survived by one niece, Janice Spitler of Pelham, Ala.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and two special friends and caregivers, Rita Stookey and Nelson Trickey.

Larry Dale Whitmarsh Sr., 40, of Columbia passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at his home.

Larry was born Jan. 29, 1966, to Larry Joe and Rosemary Whitmarsh in Columbia, and they survive.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1984.

On March 2, 1985, Larry married Irene Creekpaum in Columbia, and she survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Larry Dale Whitmarsh Jr. and Dustin Matthew Whitmarsh; a daughter, Kristina Marie Whitmarsh; a sister, Lora Jean Curry and husband Quentin; nephew Cole Aaron Curry; niece Katherine Nicole Curry; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his grandmother, Mary Folle.

Larry served for four years as a United States Marine.

He was a loving father and husband and avid sports fan, and Larry was also an avid outdoorsman. Larry was very involved with his children’s sports teams and was also a cub master at Parkade Elementary School.

Kathryn Charlene Clark, 68, a lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Kathy was known for her outspoken opinion, down-to-earth expressions, and her skill and love of the piano. She loved singing especially with the choirs of Boone Retirement Center and The Bluffs, where she was a longtime resident. Music was a very important part of her life, whether it was singing music or playing the piano. She was also a very religious person growing up in First Christian Church, where she was a member.

Survivors include her mother, Bedonna Clark of Columbia; brother John W. Clark of Columbia; sister Vevonna Clark Kennedy of Atlanta; a niece, Renee Clark Burton of Columbia; three nephews, Keith Walter Clark of Dallas, Shaun Clark Kennedy of Atlanta and Teague Caden Kennedy of Atlanta. Kathryn is also survived by the loving caregivers at The Bluffs.

She was a member of Friendship Foursquare church. She worked as a senior payroll clerk for 29 years for the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Surviving relatives include one son, Frederick E. Smith of Nelson; one daughter, Sandra Lynne Page of New Franklin; two brothers, David L. Lancaster and A.J. Lancaster, both of Columbia; four grandchildren, Amanda Wilson of Rocheport and Jessica, Lauren and Kayla Page of New Franklin; and one great-grandson, Noah Wilson of Rocheport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Tom Lancaster; and two sisters, Pearl Crawford and Alice Lancaster.

Timothy Wayne Hoover, 38, of Columbia, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at Mayo Clinic-St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Donna J. Ingwersen, 73, of Columbia died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006.

A graveside service with family and friends invited will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Missouri United Methodist Church.

Born March 15, 1933, to Jens and Jean Ingwersen, she was the first of three children.

She was graduated from Hickman High School, Stephens College and the University of Missouri-Columbia with bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

She embarked on a long and successful teaching career in Texas, then in Oak Grove, and finally, beginning in 1963, began a 23-year career teaching history and social studies at Hickman, where she is fondly remembered by many of her former students. During her career at Hickman, she served as instructor for student teachers.

She extensively traveled through Europe during her teaching years, enhancing her teaching techniques from her experiences. During this time, she was also involved as a volunteer in many organizations, including the Missouri Symphony Society in its formative years; Missouri United Methodist Church in many leadership positions; the Stephens College "Wood" Board; many sports activities at Hickman; and the Democratic Party, both locally and nationally. And still she found the time to be an enthusiastic gardener.

After her retirement, she contracted with the state of Missouri to prepare a Missouri history text and questions to be used with the Missouri SAT. At this time, she also became an even more active volunteer, working to support nearly everything that came Columbia’s way, including continued participation in the activities mentioned above; the Boone County Historical Society, where she served as chairwoman of the Historical Sites Committee; the Missouri State Games that are held in Columbia every year; the National Hot Air Balloon Championships; and, in later years, serving as an official in various Big 12 sports events staged in Columbia.

She was a member of the Columbia chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the local chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Donna’s love of her church and sports are reflected in substantial gifts she has bequeathed to Missouri United Methodist Church and to MU for intramural athletics.

She is survived by one brother and his spouse, John and Lynn Ingwersen of Killen, Ala.; one niece and her spouse, Sherry and Tim Truitt of Lexington, Ala.; one nephew and his spouse, Scott and Cheryl Ingwersen of Huntsville, Ala.; and four great-nieces.

She is predeceased by both her parents and one brother, Thomas L. Ingwersen.

Dorothy Smith, 79, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at her home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Olivet Christian Church with the Rev. Dennis Swearngin officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dorothy was born July 25, 1927, in Columbia to A.C. and Aleta Lloyd Mustain. She married Raymond W. Smith on Nov. 26, 1946, and he preceded her in death on July 31, 2000.

Dorothy lived her entire life in Boone County. She graduated from Hickman High School in 1945 and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dorothy retired from Stephens College in 1992. She was a member of First Christian Church, active in 4-H activities for 60 years and volunteered at Boone Hospital Center. She enjoyed sewing and sewed for many people in the community.

Survivors include a son, Ronald and wife Jane Smith of Columbia; two daughters, Barbara and husband Jerry Creason of Cowgill, and Carol and husband Loyd Wilson of Columbia; six grandchildren, Carrie Neville, Scott Smith, Stephanie Waigand, Meghan Creason, Keith Wilson and Kelly Wilson; and six great-grandchildren.

Clarance W. Aufranc, 93, of Dearborn, formerly of Columbia, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006.

Bobby W. Bryson, 60, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Calvary Episcopal Church. Inurnment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bobby was born on Nov. 15, 1945, in Fulton, the son of Sol and Mildred Fern Foster Bryson.

He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, then worked for the Victor Valley Union High School District in Victorville, Calif., where he was well-liked by both students and staff.

Bobby loved history and traveling, and when his wife retired in 2003, they began traveling full-time in their RV until he became ill in 2006 and returned to Columbia for treatment.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Bryson, of Columbia; one son, Robert S. Bryson and his wife, Sarah, of Pensacola, Fla.; one grandson, Matthew S. Bryson, of Pensacola; one brother, Don Bryson and his wife, Roberta, of Centralia; and many nieces and nephews.

Cheryll Hope Bilby Stone, 85, of Columbia passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at her home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cheryll was born on April 1, 1921, to S.W. and Cora Lant Bilby, and they preceded her in death. She graduated from Hickman High School in 1939 and the University of Missouri School of Home Economics in 1943. She did research at MU until moving to California and working for Van Camp Seafood Company. After World War II , she taught home economics and science at Jefferson Junior High School and later at West Junior High School.

On July 15, 1944, she married Samuel C. Stone, and he preceded her in death. She was a member of Oakland Christian Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, Phil Upsilon Omicron and the local and state Retired Teachers Associations.

She is survived by two grandsons, Scott and Graham Stone of Overland Park, Kan.; daughter-in-law Cynthia Morrissey of St. Charles; and sister Alice Irvine of Texas.

She was also preceded in death by daughter Cheryll Catherine, who died in infancy; son Richard, who died on Aug. 3, 1998; and two brothers, J. Ed and S. Wayne.

Waunita Gail Coday-Keepers, 48, of Rocheport passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Waunita was born Jan. 23, 1958, in Guam to Willard C. and Mary Jane Miller Messner.

She married Craig Keepers on July 25, 2006, and he survives.

Waunita graduated from Hickman High School in 1976 and earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration, graduating summa cum laude from Columbia College.

She worked for State Farm Insurance for 28 years, most recently as a claims adjuster.

She loved living in the country and raised flowers and a garden.

Survivors include her husband of Rocheport; mother and stepfather Mary Jane and Jerry Noble of Columbia; two sons, Shane Coday of Columbia and Ryan Coday of Sedalia; a brother, James and wife Connie Messner of Blue Springs; and a sister, Tammy Richmond of Cabool.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Margaret Evelyn Hudnell of Encino, Calif., died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Unity Center of Columbia, 1600 W. Broadway, with the Rev. Kristin Powell officiating.

Born Aug. 18, 1922, in Columbia, she grew up and lived most of her adult life in Columbia. She moved to Los Angeles in May to live with her son, Kevin. Prior to retirement, she worked as a receptionist for local building contractor Paul Maher and Eye Consultants. She worked for many years as a secretary for Labor Local 955. She graduated from Hickman High School in 1940.

She married John A. Hudnell Jr. on March 24, 1943. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are son Stephen Hudnell and wife Pat of Columbia; son Kevin Hudnell and wife Yumi of Los Angeles; granddaughter Megan of Columbia; grandson Shane of Los Angeles; and sister, Juanita Ballard of Gravois Mills.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Mark; her brother, Lester Martin; and sister Lorraine Payton.

Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Powell Hawkins Caudill, formerly of Columbia, went home to her eternal Father on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A memorial service was held a 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. to honor and celebrate her life; Dr.’s Jeff White and Russ Ritchel of First Presbyterian officiated the celebration. Betty’s friends were invited with loving and open arms to join the celebration and pay their respects. The family also had a funeral and burial service for Betty at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Shannon Funeral Home in Shelbyville, Ky., with the Rev. Carl Horton officiating.

Born Sept. 16, 1931, in Bonne Terre, Betty was the daughter of the late Ruth Isabel Dietrich and Notley William Hawkins.

Most recently, she was a beloved member of First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, N.C., the church’s Presbyterian Women and Circle Six group and the Covenant Sunday School Class.

Betty was known for her caring, loving personality and commitment to her family. She was voted "The Most Cheerful" girl in high school and aspired to be a Rockette. Betty also had several roles in life including time clock maker, secretary, physicist’s assistant, military wife, loving mother and grandmother and caring friend.

She was the beloved wife of Robert Middelton Caudill; mother of Robert Middelton Caudill Jr., Mary Ann Caudill Placey and James Hawkins Caudill.

Betty was surrounded by her family as she transitioned to the next phase of life and joined her mother, Ruth Deitrich; father, Notley William Hawkins; sister, Mariella Capes; and brother, William Hawkins Sr.

Andrew "Andy" Keith Olesen, 31, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Memorial Funeral Home, with visitation from 9 a.m. until the service on Friday. Burial will follow the funeral service in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Andy was born on July 6, 1975, in St. Paul, Minn.

Andy was an enthusiastic Denver Broncos fan. He played soccer from grade school into his adult life and enjoyed sports in general. He was a longtime resident of Columbia, moving here at age 2.

Andy loved children and was a magnet to young kids. He was concerned with family and a very positive influence on younger members of the family. Andy was an intense person known for his determination and for being a hard worker. He was also selfless and helpful to others. His life was devoted to Emily Maria Ouk, whom he married in June of 1999.

Andy is survived by his wife, Emily; his parents, Dick and Colleen Olesen of Columbia; his brother, Kevin of St. Clair; paternal grandparents, Floyd and Dilly Olesen of Becker, Minn.; and maternal grandmother, Francis Leach.

Andy was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Verne Leach.

Otto A. Palmer Jr., 70, of Columbia began his journey to heaven Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Evangelical Free Church, 600 Silvey Lane, Columbia, with Pastor Ed Phillips officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., and burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Otto was born Sept. 1, 1936, in Columbia, the son of Otto Palmer Sr. and Nettie Boatman, and they preceded him in death.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1954 and started his life as a union painter. Otto worked for Shelter Insurance for 17 years as an interior decorator and was in charge of painting the Shelter Christmas Tree. In 1985 he started Palmer Painting and Decorating, which is a successful business to this day.

Music was his passion, and he played the guitar for more than 50 years. He started out playing with the Tune Masters on the Ozark Opry, then with the Palmer Trio at receptions, Columbia College, Stephens College, Pepper and Friends, Twilight Festival, fundraisers and many more Mid-Missouri venues. His wide range of style - including bluegrass, gospel, country and jazz - allowed him to do solo stints at Jack’s, Lakota, D’Agostino’s and the Maplewood Barn Theatre to name a few.

Otto loved to travel to music festivals and jam sessions near and far. Wife Martha would pack the motor home, and off they traveled to Texas to play with the big bands, to Connecticut to study jazz, to Kentucky to play with Chet Atkins and to Nashville to study music composition as he never learned to read music. While in Nashville, Otto was featured in the Ben Speers Gospel school.

Otto entered contests across the Midwest taking second place at the National Merle Travis Guitar Playing Contest in Mountain View, Ark. His seemingly effortless way of playing drew everyone in of all ages and style preference.

Knowing he might not survive his illness, he spent months in a studio with his musician friends to record an album. He fought through pain and fatigue, determined to leave behind his wonderful gift to be enjoyed and shared by others. His CD is titled "Easy Listening Christian Music," and is his legacy to all of us.

Another passion was car restoration, and he belonged to the "Old Car Club." He restored two Ford Mustang convertibles that were used for years in the Boone County Fair Parade and Queen Contest. He also restored a T-Bird.

Otto was a member of Evangelical Free Church in Columbia. He enjoyed playing his music for church services and Christmas programs. He shared his music at numerous churches with his friends and also on his travels for the next "jam session."

He is survived by his wife, Martha J. Crowley Palmer of Columbia; son Ken Palmer and his wife, Dorothy, of Temple, Texas; two daughters, Cindy Watts and her husband, Alan, of Athens, Ohio, and Kim Robinson and her husband, David, of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; three stepsons, Chris Crowley and his wife, Lisa, of Columbia, Mark Crowley and his wife, Jeanne, of Columbia and Dennis Crowley and his wife, Debbie, of Sturgeon. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and Virginia Palmer of Athens, Ohio.

He will be missed terribly by his family, church family, musicians and peers. His "Breakfast Brunch" at Hy-Vee will not be the same without him.

Donald E. Arnold, 76, of Columbia passed away on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at Parker Funeral Service with the Rev. Jed Angel and Chaplain Chuck Barsamian. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Arnold was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Boone County to Charles F. and Nannie E. Lynes Arnold. He married Bonnie Sue Wayland on Oct. 9, 1951, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 2003.

He graduated from Hickman High School in 1948. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS DeHaven.

Mr. Arnold worked 13 years at 3M. He loved to travel to Colorado and enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Centralia.

Survivors include seven sons, Charles C. Arnold of Jefferson City, D. Thomas Arnold of Columbia, Scott H. Arnold and James W. Arnold, both of Centralia, Kirk A. Arnold of Ashland, Timothy G. Arnold of Kirksville and Joel F. Arnold of Rocheport; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Fred L. Arnold.

Etta May Graves Benedict, 95, of Columbia died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Columbia Manor Care Center.

A private burial will be held Sunday, October 22, at Memorial Funeral Home. It will be followed by a 3 p.m. memorial service at First Baptist Church in downtown Columbia. A reception in the church parlors will follow.

A native Columbian, Etta May Graves was the second of five children born to Francis Laton and Mary Opal Graves, on June 24, 1911.

After having the distinction of being the first woman to receive a diploma from Hickman High School, graduating in 1928 at the age of 16, she later became administrative secretary to University of Missouri Presidents Stratton Brooks and Walter Williams, founder of the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism.

Later she was executive secretary to three of Missouri’s Lieutenant Governors and served two terms as secretary to the Missouri Senate.

She married Eugene Howard Benedict on Aug. 26, 1931, and he preceded her in death on April 25, 1974. In 1949, she and her husband founded Central Brace Company, an orthotic and prosthetic firm, which remains in business to this day.

Always active in the First Baptist Church of Columbia, she was a long-time Sunday school teacher and served as one of the Church’s directors. She was, until the time of her death, the oldest living member of First Baptist, one of Columbia’s founding places of worship.

She is survived by her sons, Norman, Jerry and their wives, of Columbia; a sister, Beverly Hintz, of Chicago; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jean Millan Reid, 71, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, in St. Augustine, Fla.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Columbia Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Jack’s Coronado.

Jean was born Nov. 6, 1934, to Elizabeth Spencer Millan and William R. Millan in Columbia. Jean spent her early years in Crystal City, Texas, where her parents owned produce farms. Jean moved back to Columbia in 1950, and attended Hickman High School, where she met her future husband, John Michael Reid. Jean went on to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, majoring in education, and was a legacy member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She married her long time beau, Mike Reid, on Aug. 17, 1957.

Jean taught school in Centralia before starting her career as an Air Force wife, moving many times, including assignments in Alabama, Colorado, Texas, and finally settling in Dayton, Ohio, where Mike retired in 1978. The Reids became members of Oakwood United Methodist Church. In 1986, Jean visited our nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Fla., fell in love and decided that beach life was just her style. The Reids would go on to own a beach home there for many years, giving them many happy memories. In 2003, Jean and Mike decided to make St. Augustine their permanent home. Jean was a devoted wife and mother, an artist, an avid bridge player and wonderful friend. Jean loved the "island" lifestyle, listening to Willie Nelson and swimming in her pool every afternoon.

Jean is survived by her husband, Mike Reid; daughter Sarah Jane Frericks; son-in-law James Frericks; grandchildren Maxwell Reid Frericks and Elizabeth Spencer Frericks; and her dog and constant companion, "Lovey."

Her father, mother and her beloved older brother, James Millan, preceded her in death.

Frances L. Brady, 89, of Columbia died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at West Village Manor.

Mrs. Brady was a graduate of Hickman High School and worked as a bookkeeper at Brady’s Paint and Glass from 1946 to 1978. She lived most of her life in Columbia and attended Wilkes Boulevard Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, of Columbia; one son, Steven C. Brady of Arlington, Va.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Bernard M. Brady; and one sister.

W. Kent Leach, 74, of Columbia died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Services were Friday, Nov. 3, at Scottsdale First Christian Church, DOC, with cremains returned to Columbia.

Kent graduated from Hickman High School in 1950 and the University of Missouri in 1957.

He was an editor, publisher and churchman in Columbia, St. Louis and Scottsdale.

He was born March 10, 1932, to Corl A. and Oma Harris Leach in Fairbury, Neb.

After the Korean War, he served overseas in the army as a medic briefly, then with the Korean Civil Assistance Command - agriculture branch.

Kent and Elizabeth Gillette were married here June 9, 1967.

She survives along with children Gary and wife Sue, Melissa and Joanne; grandson Robert and wife Sharolyn Cerney; his mother-in- law, Edna Gillette; brother-in-law Wilson Gillette; Columbia brothers and sisters-in-law Alan and Peggy Leach and Robert and Muriel Leach; nieces Amy, Kelly and Kirsten; and nephews Corl and David.

Joan Vemer Thomas, 71, of Fort Wayne, passed from this life, Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 at Parkview North Hospital.

Raymond Sexton, 67, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at Ashland Health Care in Ashland.

Charles L. Williams, 66, of Columbia passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Charles was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Boone County, the son of Charles Ernest and Martha Irene Elder Williams.

On March 31, 1961, he married Ruby Tiffany in Columbia, and she survives.

Charles was a gifted mechanic and enjoyed rebuilding vehicles. He also had many other hobbies, including woodworking, making birdhouses and churches for friends, hunting, fishing, and camping. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years. He loved Texas, and he also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who called him "Pops."

Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Columbia; son Curtis L. Williams; daughter Christi L. Bontrager and her husband, Levi; grandson Zachary Malone; three granddaughters, Caitlyn Bontrager, Ashtynn Bontrager and Eryn Bontrager, all of Columbia; three sisters, Ruby Day of Panama, Ann Hoefelman of Clark and Alice Gravino of Columbia; one half brother; six half sisters; many loving in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Maxine Hudson Hopper, 86, of Columbia passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Sue is survived by her husband, David F. Hill; son Shawn Bell and his wife, Danielle; and daughter Jennifer Mudd and her husband, Mark. Sue is the grandmother of Emily and Gavin Bell and Amanda and Austin Mudd. She is also survived by her brother, William McMahon. She was a loving aunt to Christy and Travis McMahon and a caring great-aunt.

Vern L. Snodgrass, 83, of Topeka, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at her home.

Vern was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Columbia, the daughter of Arch H. and Katherine L. Sargent Morris. She moved to Topeka in 1951. Before moving to Topeka, she and her husband owned and operated several movie theaters in Kansas City. She owned and operated A&S Mobile Homes in south Topeka from 1951 until 1974. Since that time, she was employed in retail sales in Topeka.

Vern was blessed with a special gift in connecting with children, and many neighborhood children of all ages looked up to her as a surrogate mother. Vern married Emmett Lester Snodgrass in Columbia in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1984. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy "R.C." Morris in 1945 and Archie Morris.

Survivors include one son, Gregory L. Snodgrass and his wife, Lynda, of Medford, Ore.; one daughter, Eileen M. Klumpp and her husband, Ed, of Topeka; three grandchildren, Nonnie, Russell and Tony; and six great-grandchildren, lzahbella, Austin, LaTaylah, Zayda, Kyrah and Mykah.

Joseph Gregory "Greg" Miller, 48, of Columbia died suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at his home.

Services, conducted by Pastor Dan Barraco, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Forum Boulevard Christian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Nilson Funeral Home.

Greg was born Jan. 5, 1958, to Joseph Wayne Miller and Ruth Matheny Miller in Columbia. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in computer and electrical engineering. He married Lisa Taylor on Sept. 21, 1996, in Columbia, and she and their son, Ryan Joseph, survive. Greg owned and operated an antique refinishing business, "Renaissance Refinishing."

Survivors include his wife and son; his mother, Ruth Hoffman of Columbia; his father, Wayne Miller and wife Jackie of Webster Groves; his grandmother, Allie Miller of Wentzville; two sisters, Jan Neitzert and husband Marvin of Las Vegas and Allison Miller of Las Vegas; three half sisters, Kathy Carapella of St. Peters, Kristine Nordman of St. Louis and Karis Curtis of St. Louis; a niece, Lia Neitzert; two nephews, Andrew and Carl Neitzert; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by sister Paula Miller on Jan. 18, 1954; his maternal grandparents, John and Maude Matheny; and paternal grandfather, Joe Miller.

Jerry R. Bowser, 66, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, in Columbia.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home.

Jerry was born on April 25, 1940, in Boone County to Ray and Betty Hewitt Bowser. He married Janice Ward on Aug. 12, 1961, and she survives.

Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 280 in Columbia. He worked 43 years for the University of Missouri-Columbia, retiring in 2002 from the MU Power Plant.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Jerry will be remembered as someone who loved to spend time with his dog, Hoppy, who he liked to call his retirement buddy.

Other survivors include his mother, Betty of Columbia; children, Karla Anderson and husband Danny of Austin, Texas, and Randy Bowser and wife Mary Alice of Millersburg; brother Robert Bowser of Atlanta; sister Connie Test of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren Ashley and Kurtis Jordan of Austin, and Lucas McCray and Tanner Bowser of Millersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edna Ruth Creason, 87, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at Lenoir Care Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

Ruth was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Boone County to Grover Smith and Rose Lee Thorton Zumwalt.

On Aug. 3, 1936, she married Stanley Hubert Creason in Boone County, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1999.

Ruth was a 1937 graduate of Hickman High School, and she and Stanley lived in Boone County all their lives.

She worked for many years for Columbia Auto Parts in the bookkeeping department and also sang in the Sunshine Choir at the Senior Center.

She is survived by four children, Sandra Jean Bench and husband Dan of Four Seasons Village, Arlen Lee Creason and wife Lynn of Oklahoma City, John Paul Creason and wife Kathy of Pittsboro, N.C., and Mary Anne Crane and husband Allen of Columbia; 11 grandchildren, Stanley Thomas Bench, Dana Jean Bench, Marcus Alan Bench and Melissa Bench, all of Four Seasons Village, Cindy Durk and Windy Creason, both of Columbia, Lori Ann Powell of Belleville, Ill., Kyle Creason of the state of California, Jennifer Creason of the state of Florida, Russell Paul Crane of Columbia and Misty Dawn Heath of Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Odell Acton of Columbia and Martha Alread of the state of Missouri; and three brothers, Donald Zumwalt of Ashland, J.L. Zumwalt of Moberly and Frank Root of Tulsa, Okla.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one grandson.

Billy E. Foster, 77, passed away on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006.

A memorial service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, where friends and family are invited to celebrate his life.

Bill was born in Columbia on June 11, 1929. He attended Hickman High School and was active in the Boy Scouts and made the rank of Eagle Scout. He also served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps, during which time he was stationed in Japan at the end of World War II. After leaving the Marine Corps, Bill briefly owned a service station and was employed by Chrysler in Indianapolis. He later was employed by National Gypsum Company and McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. He retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1978 and returned to Columbia, where he quickly became known as a good neighbor and friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His friends and neighbors considered him someone who could "weld water," as he was very mechanically inclined. Bill and his wife, Judy, eventually moved to the country surrounding Columbia, which Bill considered his "little paradise."

Bill enjoyed gardening, canning produce from his garden, tending his property outside Columbia and building and repairing machinery. He also spent many years building and renovating several homes. A favorite hobby was making wine and beer and, of course, he liked to drink and share what he made for medicinal purposes and keeping the arteries open.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Judy Foster; daughter Janet Martinez; daughter and son-in law Karen and Joe Cook; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Debra Foster; and daughter and son-in-law Linda and John Marshall. He had four grandchildren, Kristy Marshall, Julia Foster, Craig Marshall and Samantha Cook. He also had one great-grandchild, Carter Warring. In keeping with the family tradition - 3 daughters and a son, 3 granddaughters and a grandson - he is also survived by his 4 family cats - 3 girls and a boy: China, Tiffany, Priscilla and Mooch. He is also survived and dearly missed by his good friends the Deakins family, the Buddemeyer family, cousin Irene Nichols and his many neighbors.

Andrew Leon Watson, 78, of Columbia passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Alan Helland officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parker Funeral Service.

Andrew was born Aug. 2, 1928, in Madison, Ill., to John and Mary Onesky Watson. He married Billie Jean Sappington on Jan. 10, 1970, and she survives.

He graduated from Hickman High School and served in the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned The Bake Shop, which later became An Jean’s Donut Shop for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean, of Columbia; two sons, Edward Sachs of Fort Myers, Fla., and Shaun Sachs of Millersburg; three daughters, Marcia Thompson of Grandin, Kay Wampler of Park Hills and Donna Heavin of Columbia; three brothers, Paul Watson of Mokane and Tom Watson and Jim Watson, both of Columbia; a sister, Mildred Watson of Mokane; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and a grandchild.

Patsy Joyce Perkins, 74, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Patsy was born June 4, 1932, in Columbia to Earl and Margaret Barnes. They preceded her in death.

She married Willis Andrew Perkins on Feb. 19, 1949. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Michael A. Perkins and wife Dorothea; grandchildren Adam and Andrew; a daughter, Margaret E. Martin and husband David; grandchildren Jamie and Mike; great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Elexis; a brother, Bill Barnes and wife Billie; a sister, Marlene Regan and husband Frank; a brother, Tony Barnes and wife Kathy; a sister-in-law, Wanda Barnes; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Patsy was also preceded in death by a brother, Hugh Barnes.

She worked as a professional cook, motel manager and apartment manager and retired from the procurement department at the University of Missouri.

Her love for her family and her faith in God were Patsy’s greatest attributes. She was a strong, yet sensitive woman, able to instill a feeling of confidence in everyone she loved. She will be missed by all.

Patsy became very close to her caregivers at Community Hospice, and we would like to thank them.

George H. Canton Jr., 48, of Columbia passed away, Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Woodcrest Chapel, 2201 W. Nifong Blvd., Columbia, Mo., 65203. Visitation will be held from 12:30 a.m. until time of service Monday at Woodcrest Chapel.

George was born March 29, 1958, to George H. Canton Sr. and Myrtle Tooley Canton in Howard County, and they survive. George married Tamra Wood on May 25, 1978, and she survives.

Survivors include daughters Angel Coleman and husband Toby of Columbia, and Amanda Canton and husband Carlos Brown of Columbia; four grandchildren, Lexi Coleman, Drew Coleman, Anisha Canton and Carlos Brown; two brothers, Michael Canton of Texas and Alvin Canton of Columbia; a sister, Dian Savage of Columbia; a grandmother, Ruth Ganaway of Fayette; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joseph R. Fisher, 83, of Columbia, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Boone Hospital Center.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Callaway Memorial Gardens in Fulton, conducted by the Rev. Richard Ramsey.

On April 23, 1947, Mr. Fisher married Jane Evelyn Tenney, and she survives. Mr. Fisher was a graduate of Hickman High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the 8th Air Force. He was stationed on several air bases in the United States and Europe.

Mr. Fisher worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Paducah, Ky., as a power plant operator. He moved back to Columbia 12 years ago and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Fisher, of Columbia; one son, Donald Fisher and his wife, Faye, of Warsaw; one daughter, Janice Fisher Hellie and her husband, Stephen, of Hollister, Calif.; a brother, Kenneth Fisher and his wife, Roberta, of Columbia; four grandchildren, Lori Summers of LeMoore, Calif., Whitney Counter of Warsaw, Brandon Fisher of Breckenridge, Colo., and Ashley Washington of Joplin; and four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Jean and Joseph Connor Summers, Alexis Washington and Connelly Counter.

Mary M. Stone, 58, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, in Omaha, Neb.

Services were held Dec. 19 at Greenlawn Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial was held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Springfield.

Mary was born April 14, 1948, in Columbia, to James Leon Perkins Sr. and Vernelle Perkins. She attended Hickman High School and worked for many years at GTE.

Mary is survived by her sons, Rance Edward Proctor of Omaha, Neb., and David Kyle Stone of St. Louis; daughter, Sarah Jane Stone of Omaha, Neb.; sisters, Lynda Nell Bartmess of Sturgeon and Deborah K. Perkins of Chicago; and brother, James L. Perkins Jr. of Columbia.

James Henry Lewis Garrett, 72 son of Robert A Garrett and Gladys Taylor Garrett, was born in Stockton, Missouri, on December 17, 1934, and died at Cedar County Memorial Hospital, Eldorado Springs, Monday, December 18, 2006. He was saved in June, 1974 and baptized in August 1982.

He is a graduate of Stockton High School Class of "55".

He was preceded in death by his only sister, Hester Garrett-Laws-Burton on December 13, 1962, and his father, Robert A Garrett on December 27, 1971, and his mother, Gladys E. Garrett on March 10 1991.

He is survived by one brother, Harold L. Garrett of Cherokee Village Arkansas; many nieces and nephews and their families and a host of friends. He was a quiet easy-going man who will be missed by many.

Services were held Thursday December 21, 2006, at Brumback Funeral Home, with interment in Stockton Cemetery.

Sue Maddox, 53, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, as a result of a car accident.

Visitation services will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Hitt St.. Funeral services will immediately follow, with the Rev. Richard Ramsey presiding.

Sue was born Glenda Sue Collins on May 20, 1953, in Oceanside, Calif. She graduated from Hickman High School and then received her degree in early childhood education from Southeast Missouri State University.

Her most cherished role was being a devoted, supportive, loving mother to her three children. She loved family events and reunions where good food and card games were plentiful.

Sue worked as the registrar at Rockbridge High School, sending students off armed with their transcripts as well as a fistful of candy after every visit to her office.

Sue adored her job and only took time off to spend with her beloved family and friends.

She also loved dogs, the outdoors and every other aspect of life. One will have a difficult time finding someone as genuine, generous and caring as her.

Sue’s survivors include her parents, Don and Nancy Collins; and her three children, Merideth, Mason and Matthew.

Barbara Boillot Hofer, 70, passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at her home in Columbia after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was happy, active and had an optimistic outlook on life up to the end.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Barbara will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 28 at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Hitt St. in Columbia.

Barbara was born Sept. 2, 1936, to Buell and Dorcas Boillot. Barbara attended grade school in the Murry community and graduated from Hickman High School in 1954. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education at Kansas State College in Pittsburg, Kan.

Barbara married Armand Hofer 51 years ago in Columbia. They lived in Menomonie, Wis., for 40 years before moving to Columbia a few years ago. They have two children: Carol Olson, her husband, Denis, and grandchildren Shondra and JoHannah of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Beth Hofer of Belmont, Calif.

Barbara and her husband both retired in 1993, and they have enjoyed worldwide travels, spending the winters in warm places and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Barbara greatly enjoyed her flower gardens and cooking and, after retirement, spent many happy hours collecting shells on Florida beaches.

Barbara is survived by her sister, Dorothy Miller and husband Bob of Springfield; and her brother, James Boillot and wife Phyllis of Columbia.

She will be greatly missed by the many people who loved her.

Frances S. Wade, 88, of Columbia passed away Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at West Village Manor.

Frances was born on May 11, 1918, in Boone County, the daughter of Raymond Nelson and Elsie McQuitty Semon.

She enjoyed quilting with her daughter, and before her passing, she was the longest living member of Woodlandville Methodist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Russell Semon, and his wife, Julia, of New Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband W.O. "Dub" Wade; and a daughter, Kay Wade.

Randall Eugene Whitesides, 64, of Columbia passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at his home.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at Memorial Funeral Home.

Randy was born on March 21, 1942, in Columbia, the son of Cleo and Dorothy Watson Whitesides. On Aug. 11, 1961, he married Sandy Lynes, and she survives.

In 1957 and 1958, he was the Soap Box Derby champ in Columbia, and in 1960 he boxed in Golden Gloves. From 1967 to 1993, he built and ran Randy’s Market with his wife, Sandy. In 1986, he was the first Mechanics Glove Golden Glove Award winner. In 1987, he won the Sports 2000 Racing Championship with his son, Kevin, and from 1989 to the present he built and ran Lakeshore Fabrications with family.

In 1999, he was on the national championship roller hockey team, and in 2005 he was the Over 60 Motorcross state champion. He owned and built many race cars, street rods and motorcycles. He loved to fish and hunt, especially with his grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; two sons, Carey Whitesides and Kevin Whitesides and his wife, Jocelyn; three grandsons, Andrew, Devin and Tony Whitesides; his mother, Dorothy Whitesides; one sister; one brother; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.
